Rankings conundrum
-
I have a website that is much better optimized than its competitors, but the competitors rank much higher for the keywords I'm going for!
This site: https://carlsbadchiropractic.com/ Has errors and all sorts of issues but it ranks in the top 10 for all the keywords I'm trying to rank for in Carlsbad, CA. chiropractor, chiropractic, carlsbad chiropractor, and chiropractor near me. My site: https://www.gohlclinic.com is much better optimized for a year now and it still ranks extremely low for these keywords. Not to mention, I was #1 for chiropractic and then it suddenly dropped to #97 and all I did was optimize some images. It's now back up to #17 but I'm seriously confused.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I'd really appreciate it.
-
Thank you Miriam for your response. A couple of follow up questions. What would you recommend I do about the high spam score? Disavow links with a score over a certain %?
-
Hi Jarod,
Thank you for the further information. I'm going to take a look and jot down what I see:
-
Using BrightLocal's rank checker with my zip set to 92008 and searching just for "chiropractic", I confirm that you are not in the local pack and are coming up on page 2 in the organic results around spot 17. In the local finder view, you are #7.
-
I see that carlsbadchiros.com and carlsbadchiropractic.com are both at the top of the organic rankings with what are basically exact match domains, which still, unfortunately can heavily influence Google's rankings regardless of site quality. Compared to your domain name, gohlclinic.com, their domains more identically match the user's query.
-
Now, searching manually from my locale in NorCal for "chiropractic carlsbad", I see different competitors in the local packs, but the same two competitors ranking organically. I see you at spot 12. organically and when I click through on the local pack to the local finder, you are coming up at #7, which is pretty good, though not as high as you'd like to be.
-
So, from the above exercise, we've identified that you aren't in any way barred from ranking or suspended or anything like that. You're just not ranking as well as you would like to. Good to know.
-
Locally speaking, and again using BrightLocal for this same search phrase + your zip code, I see that Google has two rough clusters of businesses coming up at the top of the local finder. The top 3 businesses for this search (Kline, New Wave and Longevity) are clustered between Palomar Airport Road and and Cannon Road near something named the Carlsbad Premium Outlets. The next 4 businesses are clustered around what Google is deeming the city center of Carlsbad, near the juncture of Carlsbad Blvd. and Carlsbad Village Dr.
This second cluster is where you are located, and as I begin to zoom in on it, I see that you in the midst of at least 15 chiropractic listing in this very small area. So, competition is quite fierce! And, in fact, when I zoom in quite a bit, I see that you are located right next door to two other listings (Chad R. Chapman, DC and Brian T. Killeen, DC) which appear to be practitioner listings both located at 2564 State St # A, Carlsbad, CA 92008 next to you at 2562 State St Ste B.
These 2 unclaimed practitioner listings are giving me some pause. I'm looking at your website now to see if these doctors appear to work for you, but they don't. Do you know for whom they do work? Is there actually a chiropractic office located at 2564? There's no website associated with either listing. Neither listing is outranking yours organically, and you are not being filtered out by either, but I am curious about these listings.
-
From the above exercise, we've learned that this is a highly competitive search term and that you are located near the second of two clusters Google appears to be making on the map for the local results. You are just slightly west of the second cluster, actually. We've learned that there is nothing geographic preventing you from ranking well locally, but we do see that the top 3 businesses are located down by the Carlsbad Premium Outlets and it could be that Google has some bias regarding that locale. Your rating is equal to or better than the top 7 competitors. You could use some more reviews to catch up with some of the competitors, but weirdly, you are also being outranked for this search by competitors with fewer reviews (in one case, a competitor with only 4 reviews!).
-
Looks like you have a bit of work to do regarding citations and possible duplicate listings: https://moz.com/local/details/JTI1NUIlMjUyMkdvaGwlMjUyMENsaW5pYyUyNTIwT2YlMjUyMENoaXJvcHJhY3RpYyUyNTIyJTI1MkMlMjUyMjkyMDA4JTI1MjIlMjUyQyUyNTIyR29obCUyNTIwQ2xpbmljJTI1MjBPZiUyNTIwQ2hpcm9wcmFjdGljJTI1MjIlMjUyQyUyNTIyMjU2MiUyNTIwU3RhdGUlMjUyMFN0cmVldCUyNTIyJTI1MkMlMjUyMjkyMDA4JTI1MjIlMjUyQyUyNTIyNzYwNzI5ODgwMiUyNTIyJTI1MkMlMjUyMlVTJTI1MjIlMjU1RA==
-
Now let's look at some organic metrics using the Moz Bar.
You:
Domain Authority: 22 with 503 links from 104 root domains
Spam Score 28% (you have a number of questionable links pointing to your website)
Page optimization score for "chiropractic": 84 with an advisory not to keyword stuff
Page Title: Gohl Clinic of Chiropractic in Carlsbad - Gohl Clinic of Chiropractic (this is odd and repetitive)
Your Top Organic Competitor (carlsbadchiros.com)
Domain Authority: 12 with 196 links from 48 root domains
Spam Score 2%
Page optimization score for "chiropractic": 84 with an advisory not to keyword stuff
Page Title: Chiropractor in Carlsbad CA | Carlsbad Chiropractic and Integrative Wellness
Stacking these up side by side, your spam score is coming up as a concern for me, and while the DA of this competitor is lower, so is their spam score. So, looks like you need to delve more deeply into this. Their title tag is also somewhat better than yours, although it's still about repetitive due to their brand name.
-
I also notice the Moz Bar is finding schema for your competitor and not for you. Not a ranking factor, per se, but it does make it easier for Google to understand your information.
-
Summing up, what I've done here is not a replacement for a professional audit. That really can't be done in the space of a forum, and if you need to move up in the rankings, I'd recommend hiring a really good local SEO firm to help you create a strategy based on the findings of a full self-audit + competitive audit. But, in our quick glance, we've seen some interesting things:
-
Your market is densely competitive for this term
-
Google may possibly have some local bias towards that area of town near the Premium Outlets
-
You are in the running with #7 local finder rankings and 2nd page organic rankings
-
You may have a problem with link spam/link quality that needs to be addressed
-
Exact match domains could be helping some of your competitors organically
-
Your citations could use some work
-
There are some curious unclaimed listings next door to you that deserve investigation, and of course, you should always look at all listings in your market to see if any of them could be spam.
I hope this provides some insight to get you brainstorming. In all likelihood, Jarod, you can improve your rankings, but my best advice is to invest in audits first so you can figure out a data-based strategy.
PS. Traffic to any part of your website is helpful, yes. Ranking a page for multiple terms is possible, yes, but not always easy.
-
-
Thanks for your response.
-
I was ranking #1 for "chiropractic" in Carlsbad CA. I made some simple updates, optimized images etc... and it dropped to 97 and then back up to 3 and then down to 17. I'm also trying to rank for carlsbad chiopractor, chiropractor near me, and chiropractor.
-
There are no other chiropractic clinics very close to me but it's a small town and there are quite a few competitors.
-
No, I haven't built any duplicate listings or paid anyone for reviews. I also started a PPC campaign. Oh, and I published a blog entry.
-
I updated some plugins and optimized images...and I changed the layout of a few pages but that's it. The drop was in organic rankings.
Question: Does traffic to my blog posts help my rankings on my homepage seeing as it's a different page even though it's on the same domain?
Question: Is it realistic to try to rank for 4-5 keywords for my homepage? I should I be happy if I just rank for one?
Thanks again, I appreciate your input.
-
-
Good afternoon, Jarod!
Let's see what we can figure out about this in the community. But, first, please answer some questions to help us rule out some things.
-
What is the keyword phrase you'd like us to look at?
-
Do you share an office with other chiropractic businesses, or are there any other chiropractors within a couple of city blocks of you?
-
Could you have engaged in anything that Google would frown on, like building duplicate listings or paying anybody for reviews? (Sorry to have to ask that, but it's important to get the facts).
-
Can you be specific about when your rankings dropped, and also, whether you are talking about local pack or organic rankings?
There may be more questions to come, but let's start with these. I'll be happy to come back and take a look with you. Thanks!

How to Rank Local Website in Search Engines?
Hello, I'm the owner of a rubbish removal company based in London - Frank Rubbish Removal and trying to optimize the website of the company for search engines. Until now, I have hired a couple marketing companies but without success. What I want to achieve is to rank for local keywords in the rubbish removal niche, for example, Rubbish Removal Chelsea, waste clearance Hackney, waste removal Harrow...and similar local keywords. I have spent a lot of money on marketing companies and the website still can't go on 1st page of search engines in the UK. Can you tell me what I can do or who can hire to bring my website on 1st page for the local keywords?

Raise in ranking but drop in visibility, also question about wordpress themed SEO
Hello,
Local Website Optimization | | SharonEKG
my first question is, i started working in August on a website for furniture repair and services that is a local business and who ever setup the website and did the SEO before me implanted the front page content and many other pages in the theme itself, we got Yoast premium and i mostly get bad rank of the page both from Yoast and Moz im guessing because it is simply cant find the links and content that is on the page since it is in the theme code. should i recommend the company to do a makeover and move everything to the actual wordpress page?
Also many changes has been made to the website, too many to track and i have seen in the past month an continues drop lower and lower of our visibility, but yet in the past week and half huge jump in some rankings. some of them are for hard to rank keywords, a jump of sometime 20/30+ up the ranks.
since i dont have a track of all the changes has been made, is there a way to know what cause it? Also one last question,
i have implemented google tag manager and been configuring it for the past month and now i have finally getting close to track all metrics we would like to track, i have removed all google analytics codes that i knew of and managed to find through search through the theme and plugins but yet when i fire up tag assistant it shows two codes the tag manager and analytics, i know it could interfear each other or give false/double readings. is there a way to track it and remove it? i have went through all theme files.. and cant find it.. Thanks!0 -
Website ranking issues
Hi Moz, I have a question about one of our websites that has been ranking very poorly on it's current domain (fancydoorsedmonton.com) lately, but was ranked at #1 for the search term "Edmonton Doors" until last month. The main search terms we're targeting are "Edmonton Doors" and "Doors Edmonton". I made another post regarding the on-page SEO value and had some feedback from that, but there is another issue that seems more likely to cause an issue. There are 2 more domains set up to forward to their main domain: fancydoors.com was their old domain but was registered by someone else and had some questionable, X-rated content put on it. The domain has now been reacquired and redirected to their main domain. There isn't any more questionable content on there anymore. Would this domain's past affect it's current ranking? fancy-doors.com was another old domain of theirs now set up as a redirect. In the past they had another SEO provider work with this domain and did some bad SEO work for them with automated citations, etc. We changed the domain to fancydoorsedmonton.com to get away from that and also include Edmonton in the domain. If you have any ideas or feedback to provide based on this information it would definitely be a huge help to us. Thanks!

International SEO - How to rank similar keys for differents countries
Hello MOZ friends.
Local Website Optimization | | NachoRetta
I work in an digital marketing agency in Argentina and since we have a lot of traffic from other Spanish-speaking countries like Mexico and Spain, we want to rank specific keywords for these countries.
We were thinking of putting new versions of the homepage in subfolders, for example /es/ for Spain, /mx/ to Mexico, etc. In these new subfolders we would place a very similar version of the homepage with a few minor modifications to work specific keywords in each country. For example, in Spain it is more searched "marketing online", and "marketing digital" is more used in Mexico and Argentina.
I have understood that to implement this we would be to place a label hrflang on the homepage directing visitors and crawlers to the correct version of each country. Is it ok?
Another concern is, whether they are very similar pages, Google does not take it as duplicate content ..
I read this:
https://moz.com/blog/the-international-seo-checklist
And i am not completely sure about using subfolders for each country, but i dont know how to position diferents keywords for diferent countries.

How can my categories rank for my different branches? Tidied site up but now local rankings are worse
Dear Mozzers , I am wondering if someone could please help with some advice and assistance on the following for our Tool hire site: Basically I like to know how we can rank for our categories for our different branch locations ?. We have a branch finder page and separate branch pages but I do not know if I should have an internal link from all our branch pages to all my different categories or not or is google clever enough to know that I have x locations and x categories and I should rank all the categories in all the locations. I think my site structure is fairly straightforward and on the face of it similar to what others do who have multiple branches . For example I enclose a link to 2 of our categories - carpet cleaner hire category and a floor sander hire category carpet cleaner category - http://goo.gl/cMyS4i floor sander category - http://goo.gl/4ipUyA Heres a link to our Branch Finder - http://goo.gl/UyTQdK Heres a link to one of our Branches for example - Bristol Branch - http://goo.gl/9TXHTK And heres our link to our google plus Bristol page - google plus bristol branch page - https://goo.gl/h0IwAK . We have link from our bristol page going to the bristol google plus page and visa versa. Currently within our internal linking structure there is No direct link on the branch pages to the categories ?. Is this something we need to do or not necessary ?. - If we do it , then it may mess up or confuse the page as I someone need to get all the category links on the branch pages ? We have lots of good unique content , lots of citations for our branches and categories etc but we just don't seem to rank at all well for any of our categories in local search. For example if somene was to search for - Carpet cleaner hire "City Name " or Floor sander hire "City Name" (City name being where our branches are). We dont rank very well for most of our cities. Even without putting the city name in we dont rank to well in local search. We used to have individual pages for our categories in each of the cities we have branches with unique content on all and these did rank quite well in a few cities but never top 3 in most and we got rid of these last month (start of Oct) as I was told that google may see this as quite spammy or doorway pages if I have a carpet cleaner hire Bristol page or a floor sander hire Bristol page etc ?.. All my location landing pages now just 301 back to the appropriate category. I am wondering if getting rid of these landing pages was a good idea as by tidying things up , I've seemed to have lost my local rankings for my cities. Can someone please advise if what I did was right and what else I should look at doing ?> Could it be an internal linking issue I need to sort ? Any assistance much appreciated.

Why am I not ranking although my domain authority is higher than competitors with same relevancy?
So I am trying to rank the domain http://jamesriver.org for the term "Churches in Springfield, MO" Not sure why we are not ranking as well as we ought to rank. I have a few assumptions, but wanted to see what other have to say to get better input. Below are some details about the us: We have done a brand name change in the past 2 years - James River Assembly to James River Church We have two locations: Ozark, MO - which has been there for a very long time and Springfield, MO which is a newer campus We have higher domain authority than others that rank higher for the term We have a new website that was launch about 3 months ago We have a location page for each of the 2 campuses I am wondering what factors might be at play in our lesser rankings even though we are relevant to the term and have higher authority than those that are ranking much higher than us. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Why My Site is Ranked for Few Hours on Daily Basis in Google SERPs
We have observed Google is shuffling our ranking on daily basis for our website: www.strokesexhibits.com, which is annoying. Almost on daily basis, in evening hours we are in ranking against almost every keyword for few hours (roughly 6-12 hours) but in the morning hours we are back to 50+ to 100+ positions. This is not happening with our domain only but facing same issue with the Google plus pages and few articles which we have on some high authority sites are behaving in same way. Site does not rank on Google's country specific search engines.
My site shows up on the first page of 'google.com' but not on the other search engines like google.co.uk / google.co.in / google.com.au. It shows up on the 3rd or 4th page for the most part. My competitors' sites rank consistently across all geographical versions of Google. Is there something i am missing out on? My website is a web applicaton and not a business listing.
