Should I remove a high traffic page on my website?
-
For the last few years, a particular blog post on my site has gotten 3 times as much traffic than any other page, even the home page; however, the topic of the post is only moderately related to the website topic and I'm wondering if all that unrelated traffic is negatively effecting SEO for our primary keywords.
Here's an example....
- Site topic: Yoga retreats in Costa Rica (we want to attract people who are interested in booking a yoga retreat)
- Blog Topic: How to extend your visa in Costa Rica (it's related only because it's about Costa Rica and travel, and may help our visitors stay longer)
Other Notes:
- In 4 years, visitors to that blog post have never converted.
- Blog post bounce rate is 56%, significantly higher than almost any other page
- Lots of comments on the blog post so visitors to it are engaged and find it very useful
- To get an accurate reading of interested visitors to the site, i always have to filter entrance visits to this post in my analytics because these users are not an accurate representation of the visitors we're trying to draw.
My question: Because I get so much traffic from the blog post, which is about the visa renewal process, will Google consider the website less about yoga and more about visas? If so, will it make it more difficult to rank well for yoga in Costa Rica? Does Google say to itself, "Hey, this website can't be an authority about both yoga and visas in Costa Rica so we're going to consider it a visa site because of all the visits and engagement it gets for that topic."
So should I remove the post or just leave it alone? It offers a lot of people valuable information so I would never delete it entirely, but would redirect it somewhere else.
Thanks!

Thanks. That's the most well-conveyed answer I've been given for this question.

I agree with everything that effectdigital has posted.
If that page about visas is pulling in the traffic and not converting, I would make sure that it has some visible Adsense on it.
Several years ago, I added one wildass article to one of my sites and lots of my visitors consumed it. So, I added another, and lots of people consumed it, and the both of them were pulling in good traffic from search. Today, there are about 100 articles in this vein on the site, and the category page for this content ranks #1 for a one word query related to this content that most people would think to be crazy difficult. This stuff pays, and the rest of my site has no problems ranking for anything.

It's true that the post may slant Google's view of what your site is about. That being said, removing the post won't make your other pages rank better and it may drop your PageRank. If you want to see those kinds of traffic levels, whilst having better qualified traffic (from more relevant keywords) then creating new successful content is the answer. Deleting stuff seldom leads to gains in Google's SERPs, it's seen as the easy way out and is not rewarded (9 times out of 10)
It's not that the post will block you from ranking where you want to rank, it's simply that none of your keyword 'aligned' content (for the terms which you do want to rank for) was proven to be 'as good' as the post which hogs all the rankings. I don't really see why a site couldn't rank confidently for yoga and visas. Look at the UK, look at sites like Visit London. That site ranks for loads of terms which you might assume weren't directly related. SEO is usually about confidently stepping forwards with effort and insights, rather than culling things and sweeping stuff under the carpet

Is it better to try and boost an old page that ranks on page #5 or create a better new page
Hello Everyone, We have been looking into our placements recently and see that one of our blog posts shows on page #5 for a popular keyword phrase with a lot of search volume. Lets say the keyword is "couples fitness ideas" We show on page 5 for a post /couples-fitness-ideas-19-tips-and-expert-advice/ We want to try and get on the first page for that phrase and wanted to know if it is better if we did one of the following: 1. Create a new page with over 100 ideas with a few more thousands of words. with a new url (thinking /couples-fitness-ideas) 2. Create a new page with a new url (thinking /couples-fitness-ideas) with the same content as the currently ranking post. We would want to do this for more freedom with layout and design of the page rather than our current blog post template. Add more content, let's say 100 more ideas. Then forward the old URL to the new one with a 301 redirect. 3. Add more content to the existing post without changing the layout and change the URL. Look forward to your thoughts

Noindex pages being indexed
Hi all Wondering if anyone could offer a pointer on a problem i am having please. I am developing an affiliate store and to prevent problems with duplicate content I have added name="robots" content="NOINDEX,FOLLOW" /> to all the product pages to avoid google penalties. However, Google appears to be indexing product pages. When I do a site: search I see a few hundred product pages in the engine. This is odd as the site has always had noindex on these pages. Even viewing the cache of the indexed page shows the noindex meta tag to be in place. I'm at a loss as to why these pages are being indexed and could do with removing them asap to stop any penalties on the site. Many thanks for any help.

Are internal and external footers on all pages of a large website detrimental to seo?
Hi, I am doing an seo clean up of our site - we have about 12 footers on the bottom of each page plus an internal site map including core keywords. Most footers go to internal sites and some go to external sites which are replicated on those external sites linking back to ours. (these sites are part of the same large company but are not related in any way) Are these bad from an seo ranking perspective? Do the look like spam? We get considerable traffic from one of the external footers that is replicated on their site so need to weigh up what the best option is whether to keep the traffic or to loose it as part of the seo clean up. thanks

Why Is this Website Not Ranking?
HI There - I have been working on this site: http://limohireauckland.co.nz - primarily for our keyword phrase 'limo hire Auckland' - I am running a campaign for this site from the Pro tools and using the pon-page report card this url achieves an A grade for that particular phrase. The client is working on links in the local community etc but we are not appearing in the SERPS at all for most of the phrases we are optimising for. There has recently been a huge redesign on the site (approx 6 weeks ago) and the old content was not great. Am I missing something really glaringly obvious? Or am I being too impatient?

Home page keyword effecting internal page ranking
Hello, My client has a second keyword for the home page that is competitive. The home page is not being ranked for this keyword. Instead, an internal category page is ranking. This internal category page is more relevant than the home page - it shows the categories for the actual products that this term refers to. But everyone around us in Google's page results has far more backlinks than the internal page, and we're all heavily optimized for this term. My question is, is it safe to pull the second term off of the home page or is this internal page strong because it is somehow being strengthened by the home page optimization?

View all Page for Product Overview Pages
Hi everybody! We have an ecommerce site with product overview pages, where sometimes there are hundreds of products listed. Usually, we just display 30 and have a button where users can click to see 30 more - or all products listed at once. This is the overview page (as indexed in google): http://www.geschenkidee.ch/aussergewoehnliches.html
On-Page Optimization | | zeepartner
And this is the view-all page: http://www.geschenkidee.ch/aussergewoehnliches.html#all What should I do here? The product overview page will hardly generate more traffic by listing all products (because the overview page will rank for generic keywords, while the product keyword searches will be referred to the specific product pages themselves). I was originally thinking of using rel=canonical pointing to the view-all page. But this would just lead to longer load time. Should we just leave those overview pages or is there a best practice for how to deal with such pages? Thanks for your thoughts on this!0 -
Product page optimalisation
Throughout the years our website kept on growing this has led to product pages that have so much sub-pages that nobody is able to really get a good idea of the product. We are working on a new website where the visitor is central. Together with a usability partner we have down sized the preferred data to fit on one page with a tabular system with a maximum of 4 taps. My question will this affect our find ability if we go from 10 to 15 sub-pages to one main page

If I have too many on-page links can I reduce it with nofollow tags or do the links have to be removed?
On my site I have a top nav drop down menu but once visitors go to one particularly large subsection, that menu is repeated on the left for easier viewing. As a result, I shoot over 100 links on page. Can I put nofollow or noindex tags on the left side links and reduce my "official" on-page links count or do I have to actually eliminate some of the links? Thanks, Oak
