Should local businesses focus exclusively on a local SEO strategy (and forget traditional SEO)?
-
Hello Friends!
I work at a small, local company. We definitely want to rank high for local search , so we see the value of having a local SEO strategy.
But does it make sense for us to also invest in a traditional SEO strategy?
My understanding is that a traditional SEO strategy is focused on improving your site's visibility on a national or international scale. Does this make sense for my company if only local customers convert?
If we had unlimited time and resources, I'd be all for a traditional SEO strategy. I understand that the more traffic, backlinks, etc. my site generates from producing relevant content, the higher my ranking.
But my company has to be very strategic about where we spend our time since our resources are limited.
So...How much can or does a traditional SEO strategy impact local search results?
I'd hate to spend the time writing a beautiful SEO-optimized blog on dog grooming, for example, if that effort won't impact my SERP ranking when someone in my area searches for "dog grooming near me."
I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Hi Chris!
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question. I'm really glad you brought up EAT, because you're right. We like to regularly blog to show EAT and to nurture relationships with customers and prospects. We just don't take the time to optimize our blogs for SEO. I wasn't sure if that was a worth-while venture as our primary goal is to be discovered by locals looking for our services.
I really like your suggestion of creating web pages that demonstrate EAT. Yes! Those pages are also a great opportunity to use local keywords and to showcase our brand.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question!

Anna,
I'd say you're definitely on the right path to more customers by focusing on the effectiveness of your local search first. And do keep in mind though, that it's not SEO you're after, it is customers. The beautiful writing about dog grooming is to inform your potential clients that you are an Expert at what you do, you are an Authority within your field, and that you and your business are Trustworthy entities.
A "blog" is not a necessity for a small company in a small niche to demonstrate EAT--you can do that with your individual pages. For most people with a business website online, I would venture to guess that the word "blog" brings up visions of a never-ending slog through the world of copy writing, wordpress-admin-techno-babble, and idea-generation for which they have to slice off a daily or weekly piece of their work time to wallow in. You are allowed to be free of that and still have a successful website.
For a wide variety of reasons, a huge number of business blogs are more hindrance to the company than help to their keyword rankings. Instead, use your internal services pages to develop EAT. Look at each of those individual pages about your areas of expertise as longer term creations that you adjust and modify as your business and your brand develop--a large part of which is, and should be, about your location. Incorporate locality and keywords into your those pages and have fun with them buy using them to display what makes you and your company you and your company.
When you're happy with your creations, you may decide that you want to continue to write and develop a blog, but do it because you want to, not because you think it's good for SEO.

What Service Page Strategy Should We Use to Target City-Specific Local Intent Service Keywords?
Hey guys! We are targeting a number of cities in the Nassau and Suffolk County areas for foundation repair, insulation, and mold remediation keywords, and we were debating on creating city-specific pages for each location and service, or creating one service page for each type of service that contains all of the services and solutions within that service category for each city. Example: City-Specific Pages for Each Service: One page for say foundation repair, one page for foundation crack repair, one page for foundation problems, etc. (for each target city) Service Category Pages for Each City: One page for foundation contractors that lists all services on one page in sections. Which one do you think is better for local SEO and rankings? Both seem to have their advantages and disadvantages to me. Just to throw a couple out there, the category pages may not rank as high as the city pages for each individual service if our competitors have a whole page designed for that service and we only have a part of a page covering the topic. At the same time, they would save labor hours, technical issues would be less, and they would be condensed, and we would have WAY less mess on the backend. I appreciate your expert opinion on this one. The site is www. zavzaseal.com in case you want to check us out.

Rankings preferring English URL above local URL
We've recently had a redesign for our website and it has influenced our rankings a little bit. However, what I mainly noticed is that for some keywords in MOZ the English URL is looked at in terms of ranking, instead of the local URL. It used to be just the local URL ranking, even for keywords that are more English oriented, and I'm wondering if that might be hurting our rankings. And more importantly, why it's happening. An example of a page where it's happening is: https://www.bluebillywig.com/online-video-platform/

How valuable is non-local organic traffic for local business?
Hey friends! I work for a local digital marketing agency in Greenville, SC – serving primarily local small businesses. Over the past six months, we've increased our monthly organic traffic by almost 100%. The majority of this traffic is coming to blogs we've written over the past year on industry topics and trends. I love seeing our traffic increase, but it hasn't necessarily translated to more quality leads. Conversion numbers have largely remained the same. I think one reason is that a lot of this traffic isn't local. Here's my question: as a local business, how valuable is content that ranks well and drives organic traffic, when the traffic isn't local, and from users we would never work with? A lot of this content has earned links and grown our authority, so I suppose we've seen benefit, but I'm struggling to convince myself that it's really that valuable. I know local content is key, but it feels like what we want to educate on isn't searched locally. Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!

How to promote a local SEO/Web design company via a blog (mainly blogging) and social media?
Hello, What is possible as far as promoting a local SEO and Web Design Company with a blog? I'm offering simple web design, both informational and product based, as well as SEO for existing informational and product-based companies here in Boise, Idaho. At first it won't be face to face so there's no local SEO. I honestly don't like to sell. I've done it for years and I'd like to spend my time blogging (mainly blogging), doing social media, and volunteering. How can I use this approach to get a beginning agency off the ground? Please don't tell me to go push my services. I'd like to get my company off the ground through avenues that have integrity to me. How do I do this? Feel free to include articles and videos in your response if appropriate. Thank you.

Question about Multi-Locale/Lang Sitemaps
If you have one site with multiple language and locale variations how best should one approach the sitemaps. Here is what I believe the options to be: sitemap_index.xml which includes all of the difference lang/locale sitemaps on the site create 1 main sitemap that includes the rel=alternate href lang for ever alternate page to the main US version. Do the sitemap_index.xml for all the other sitemaps and also include the rel=alternate href lang in those separate ones as well. I have these in this order because it goes from least to most work....Thoughts folks?

Is my link structure hurting my SEO?
Moz says I have too many links on the homepage - could this be hurting my SEO? I have a lot of links on my homepage - especially from the services menu. I also have a few in the intro paragraph that are unnecessary but are linked to other pages using keywords - such as "veterinarians" which go to Meet our Veterinarians, etc. I'm afraid to make changes as I don't want to go overboard and actually hurt our rankings further. Any thoughts on this? Brant
