SEO Virgin - how shall I start ?

Hello everybody,
I'm pretty new to this whole SEO world but Im willing to do my best to learn the most crucial things in order to optimize our site for it.
I've purchased the pro option and hope to get some insights into areas that need to optimized in order to get a great ranking by google.
I've already started with share linking and social media activities, in order to build up links to our sites.
Since our community will be a specified media sharing portal, Im not quite sure how I should start the linking process besides posting some relevant articles on digg, delicious, facebook, etc, incl. relevant links and content...
I read in some of your forums that you would not recommend to pay for links.
So how shall I start with the onpage optimization and link building process ?

SEO encompasses many things and it keeps changing.
It's easier to understand all of the articles on this site when you can visualize the process step-by-step. That's why I recommended Dover's book. He covers the information from a consultant perspective.
Watch all of the Whiteboard Fridays. You shouldn't need much background information to understand them. And most of them are only ten minutes a piece.

SEO Secrets by Danny Dover is a great book to get an overview of the SEO process, especially for on-page optimization:

And to answer your question, I'd pursue on-page optimization first.

How should I start?
Hello Everyone, I have just launched a new education website for the UK market. Its been a very long time since I did any link building or SEO. I dabbled in it for my own business almost 10 years ago and although I was (and I am) an amateur it was nevertheless very successful and effective. It felt like you could get some links and rank without throwing a huge amount of money at it. However, it seems a minefield now. It also feels like if you don't have deep pockets you don't have a hope in getting ranking. And my budgets are very limited. I am looking for advice in terms of what I should do to get this website to rank and get a decent amount of traffic. I am hoping Moz members can help me with this. I have a website which I published less than a week ago. It has now been indexed by Google. On a positive note, I believe its a very powerful exact match domain. And as its education, it has a lot of content or pages, which will only grow. I am happy to post the domain here, I don't know if I should? On the negative side of things, it obviously has no history or links. So if you were trying to rank a new website, what would you start with? What would you do first and second etc? Do people still get directory and forum links? Are they useful? It seems like its mainly blog articles now. Please educate me a little. I am trying to read up as much as I can. Can i create more blogs/websites for SEO?
Hello, Can i create more blogs/websites 2.0 for SEO? It is safe to get backlinks from that pages (5-10 diffrent domains)? Blogs/websites like: wordpress.com, webs.com, soup.io... Content: Only unique content related to my websites, new content every week. My website realy need fresh backlinks so i think these method are alright?

HELP - Should I Disavow SEO, Site Analysis, and Website Worth Links?
I have a gadget site and have MANY links to my site from sites that offer web analysis or SEO tools. For example, the site chkme.com has over 1,000 links to my home page. I don't know who they are, why they are linking to my site, and their site is irrelevant to my industry. Should I disavow links from sites like these? My site seems to be linked to from a lot of "website worth" type sites as well. I think I may have been hit with an unnatural site penalty but I do NO blackhat or any type of link building whatsoever. Thanks in advance 😉

What are Best Practices for Ault Site SEO
Has anyone here had experience doing SEO for an Adult DVD website? A company has approached me and they obviously only want White Hat practices. I have used open site explorer to do research on some competitors. The top competitors of this company seem to have only a few high PR links from High Authority industry sites and almost all have a link from the Yahoo Directory. Does anyone know where or how to create high authority content links from this niche? It seems that most of the competitor links are on sub par pages and are single links in the side nav of other sites. I am not sure if I can post a link to the company here but any suggestions on link building for adult sites would be great. Please remember they are a retailer and don't have pop up advertising or any illegal content. Thanks,

I publish a link roundup on my company blog on weekdays.

Has Anyone used Eyeflow SEO out of Pittsburgh
We are looking to have a third party do some white hat link building for us because we currently do not have the resources to do so in house and do not want to rush into a hire. We are looking at eyeflow because they are local to our area and we would have the opportunity to personally see how they do things. Has anyone had any experience with them, or have any suggestions for things to ask or be weary of? Thanks

I'm eager to hear peoples experiences both good and bad with SEO Agencies. I have tried many. I'm particularly interested in hearing experiences of types of link building. In my experience many SEO agencies build low quality links, that at least in my view are unlikely to stand the test of time, with one or two expections.

Blogging to add SEO value to site... recommendations
Hi Mozzers! A client has a high authority website in the travel industry, and needs any and all advantages to get ahead in very competitive keywords. The send out a newsletter bimonthly, but have no blog, so I recommended at the very least, they publish online their emailed newsletters to add informational and relevant content. The question is, for max SEO value, should they... create a blog as a subdomain or subfolder of their existing site? should they self host a blog with a separate domain? or should they simply use a blogger/wordpress.com free blog? Consider that just adding on a blog to their existing site isn't easy. It's some old CMS that's apparently a nightmare to deal with. Plus, branding a WP install to match the site isn't something they want to spend a lot of time on. Your insight is welcome and appreciated!
