Why should I avoid publishing off-topic content on my website?

As a fun project, my team wanted to build a mini-food blog based off the lunches we make here at our office -- but we're a software company and, topically, our product has nothing to do with food. Therefore, I suggested that we not publish this content on our website + create a Medium publication instead (this would also help us avoid the headache of creating an entirely new section of our website / potential 404 issues from non-technical editors / etc.) However, I struggled to articulate _why _it's a best practice to only publish relevant content on your website. Is it to help search engines understand what your website is about as an entity? Spam signals?

Multiply pages of similair subject not showing up in serps?

Hi, I have a website with a lot of similair subjects. Its a website with around 1000s pages.
For example this website is about "cars" so I wrote a pages about: Green classy cars
Green cars for the summer
Green car show 2013 What happens is that on the query of "Green car show". The page green classy cars shows up. I have the feeling that google takes one page about a similair subject and only put on in the serps. I checked this on multiply pages and this seems the case. If I search on exact "Green car show 2013" + MY URL, still then its shows indexed but only position 4. Places 1,2,3 shows again other pages of my website with similair subject. Now my feeling says the other pages have more authority and thats why they show up higher. But then...again now all the content Im adding it isnt showing up.. The last months I added around 300 pages and I did not got one visitor more daily and I have the feeling it is because it are all similair pages and google does not want to show them. My question is: Is their something I can still make them show up? Because they do have all 100% unique content and 100% unique images they only have similair subjects. or Is their some way I can tell Google that his are really different pages, so this would maybe help?

Prevent average users from copying content and pasting into their websites

Please do not respond with a "you can't stop them" comment, I understand this. Most of our pages have content that is duplicated across multiple domains. The recent Google algorithm update focused on penalizing pages that have duplicate content, and it could be one of the reasons that we have been seeing traffic loss. I'm looking for some type of javascsript/php code that will help minimize this issue.If could be code that does not allow you to copy and paste the code without turning of javascript or a dialog box pops up and says "this content is copyright protected, anyone copying this content is subject to legal action" I've found one script that might work http://www.ioncube.com/html_encoder.php My questions are still the same: 1 What is the best method to achieve my objective? 2 Will this additional code affect how the webbots see our site and or affect rankings? I know that anyone can figure out how to get the code, I am trying to mitigate by providing a warning about copyright infringement and making it more challenging to copy our content. How do you build authority for your website ? (after Penguin update)

How do I get the correct picture to show up in the SERPs?

When I search for "Popular Baby Names" using Google UK, I get the image below that is clearly displaying the wrong picture. I believe they are coming from a module on the page in the left rail. I know I can use Robots.txt to have Google not show the image at all, but I don't want to impact my click through. Issues with copying online forum reviews on own website

Apologies- I asked a similar question the other day but did not word it as clearly as possible. We are looking at having a text box of 'What customers say' on our product pages using reviews written about us online (to remain factual) and wanted to know if this created any issues relating to search engines finding matching content on two separate websites? Will this have any SEO implications as effectively we are 'plagiarising' the content in the eyes of the bots even though it is just customer opinion of our own products right? Thanks in advance.
