Should we be concerned with the TLD .XXX?
-
Should brands be concerned with registering or blocking the .XXX TLDs? Should individuals care about .XXX registration? Will links from .XXX be helpful? Will a 301 redirect from a .XXX be harmful?
Bonus Question added:
Should .XXX's show up in safe search results?
-
It probably will not help or hurt google looks at each site on an individual basis - tld is not important unless you are talking at about country specific google websites like google.ru for example and having an ru tld.
-
I'd go with TresEquis.xxx

@Zachary
Hmm... good strategy on the redirect them to a competitor. I think I shall buy some just for that laugh!
... Thanks for reading my profile. I understand as a business owner that insurance is both good and necessarily. But I don't particularly like extortion, which is what this feels like. I hate malpractice insurance and I'm not even a doctor.
Further, I have a feeling that the .XXX's won't be showing up in safe search. Still have not got response from Matt Cutts on that but Duane Forrester believes that Bing will not be showing them. So why should I bother? What good is a viral piece done on a .XXX if the links are worthless and the domain doesn't show up in the searches?
-
Yes... I have actually thought of all the viral funny stuff that could be done with .XXX sites, hence the questions. What good is a .XXX if it's not going to show up in the search? Or what value or de-value will a .XXX link have? Heck, I really like the possibilities, but at $99/year the cost for humor takes on a higher risk.
I know it's pure speculation at this point, but since the landrush is on, my domaining addictions are coming full swing... Did I tell you about www.IamAdomainJunkie.com?

There are some people who swear that a link from a .gov or a .edu site is worth more than a similar .com or .whatever. I've never seen any proof that the extension alone carries more weight just by itself. I think there are other factors that make .edu and .gov valuable (unique content, natural inbound links, not many outbound links, etc)
- Should you block .xxx? Depends what the content of the site is. The idea behind .xxx is to make adult sites but that's not going to stop an adult site from buying a .com or a car site selling cars from buying cars.xxx
- If I were starting a website I would be careful. The .xxx extension is known to be for adult sites (as in X rated, or, in 'net lingo, NSFW) and it makes for easy filtering for some people (I guarantee you that some people will think that they can block .xxx and be safe from unwanted adult sites). If you buy one, some people might avoid you solely on that basis.
- Any link can be helpful but you need to consider that Adult sites can have difficulty in gaining traction and that is undoubtedly going to play against any .xxx site, adult or not (remember, porn sites are also notorious for hiring spammers). If you already do due diligence on your links (which you should be doing anyways) then I don't think there's any special warnings warranted here.
- Unless you buy some previously adult domain I don't see why it would. Same rules as discussed apply.
@EGOL not a bad idea. Maybe someone should buy dosequis.xxx, just for the irony
-
Remember, the moderators are watching (and laughing).
-
Bounce rate on a XXX site. I foresee an endless supply of innuendos....
-
LOL..nice suggestion EGOL, although I fear there might be some pretty significant Bounce as a consequence of disappointed surfers not finding what they were expecting.
oops...did I say that?
-
XXX means different things to different people.... in Appalachia it means "been through the still three times". So, someone should register moonshine.xxx and build a site.
-
Should brands be concerned with registering or blocking the .XXX TLDs?
Reputation management is one of your strong suits, or so your profile says. You of all people should know that registering all relevant top level domains is necessary in a situation where a business is serious about their reputation.
Should individuals care about .XXX registration?
Some will be interested, some won't. Not everyone wants to develop a .xxx domain. Maybe I don't understand this question?
Will links from .XXX be helpful?
Matt Cutts has stated on more than one occasion that the domain extension does not matter. Yes.
Will a 301 redirect from a .XXX be harmful?
It would be too easy to register .XXX domains and redirect them to your competitors. No.

Hey I'm doing web optimization of my site Best Blender under $100 My inquiry is with respect to Backlinks. There are 2 things which can be seen in MOZ announcing 1. Confused About Potential Spammy Inbound Link
I unsure how my page got backlinked on this "passive DNS" website: http://pdns.daloo.de/search.php?alike=0&q=66.96.162.137 This looks to be my only inbound link, so I am worried this is negatively affecting my site ranking. Is this 56% spam score link negatively affecting my website? If so, any suggestions? Any feedback or insight would be greatly appreciated as I am very ignorant to what this person's webpage is about and why my page was linked.. Sincerely, Hayden My website: https://cashflo.org/

Community Discussion: The hardest (& most surprisingly valuable) thing you've gone through for your SEO career?
In the comment discussion for Thursday's blog post, An Essential Training Task List for Junior SEOs, there's been mild debate around some of the items, such as having a Junior SEO build a website by hand. It's a fantastic comment discussion (the kind that makes a blog manager's heart sing), and it's got me thinking. We've all gone through the wringer when it comes to boosting our careers. Heck, I was a poetry major and found myself learning SQL last week. What hurdles have you jumped that have been painful and challenging, but have taken your career to the finish line? Maybe even gotten you the gold?* What would you recommend to newbies just starting out (or warn them about)? *Yeah, I got Olympic about it. I went there. 🙂

New TLD's released Jan 1st 2013\. Who's in ?
Hey Mozzers, Auctions for new top level domains (examples of top level domains are: .com, .net, .info, .org etc) concluded in the summer and will become available from january 1st. Did anybody bid/buy a new tld or know someone who did? And who has plans to register new exact match domains? My hobby is poker and i have a big passion for it so im already thinking about .poker domains. play.poker, texasholdem.poker etc. Here is an overview with TLD's that will come available:|
Industry News | | PrizeWize
http://www.newgtldsite.com/new-gtld-list/ I also like .amsterdam (my home town) as TLD. What are your thoughts on this? I haven't heard or read much about this in the SEO community so im interested in getting a discussion started.0 -
Concerned about where links are coming from
Hi I am hoping someone can help me with this. I run a small seo company for a few select companies in the luxury markets. Due to certain circumstances I need to outsource a lot of link building until my in house link builders can return to work. After a phone conversation with an SEO company which offer white label service (quite a large UK company but will remain nameless) I became extremely concerned that they are supply paid links to there customers. I will explain what i mean and would appreciate advice on whether I should stay clear or not. They claim to have access to over 1000 websites in many different niches and can get a whole host of links from contextual (which they said would give 3 links in 300 words which rang the first alarm bell) then said the other come from primary theme links and hybrid links (oh which neither they would properly explain what they are). My main concern is they said the links are made and need to be "maintained" by a yearly fee so they are not removed. When I asked if they surely count as paid links I got a usual boiler room style sales pitch. My instincts tell me to stay away but maybe I am just reading it all wrong. They claim to already white label to over 300 other SEO companies, but it all sounds a bit risky to me after Googles tough stance on this! Thanks Paul

What is your Biggest SEO selling point to prospective clients?
Typically, our SEO questions are around "how to's" and etc. So, to change it up I will ask a business question: What is your biggest selling point when presenting your SEO services to a new client? In a spirit of transparency, I will tell you mine ahead of time. With PPC, TV, Radio, and Print at some point in time that ad comes to an end. When it ends, that is it. There is no residual from that advertisement - or very minimal at best. With SEO, once you are ranked well and well optimized you continue to get clients for a much longer period of time. With clients who TV and print, this rings especially true and is easily provable. I can't wait to hear yours.
