How many small businesses use SEO?
-
I'm looking for data (not opinions) on how many small businesses use SEO, that is, either do it in-house, hire a firm, or hire a freelancer. I've poked around on SEMPO and eConsultancy but can't find what I'm looking for.
-
I have an answer.
Less than ten in any industry niche.
Why that number? That is how man fit on the first page of Google and everyone else - even if they do SEO - is not getting much out of it.
-
Another good question. Probably hiring someone outside to optimize their site would certainly point to their knowledge of the need of SEO. I would say that you would have to preface with, "Other than when you built your website, have you ever..."
Experience would agree with Phil in that the number would be small. Most businesses we speak with believed they just needed a website and the world would flock to their door. I think that is good news for those who are all in for the SEO business
-
I guess a Phone survey might work. Whatever the number I am sure it is likely to be small. Maybe a good question to ask is how often do Small Businesses Regularly update their website's content.
I think we are still in the days of trying just to get many small business online. In our world we would expect everyone to be online, but you would be surprised at how few actually even have a website. Even fewer regularly update them and even less have attempted to optimize them.
I would look into internet statistics related to how many small businesses use the internet to conduct or acquire business and make some conservative assumptions from there.
The Google Small Business Network is still fairly young and is a good high level indicator of where we think we are vs where we actually are. http://www.google.com/smallbusinessnetwork/
Who knows maybe they will post something on Google Internet Stats: http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en/landing/internetstats/

Good points! What about asking each business have they ever hired someone (outside of their company) to optimize their website?
-
Even with a phone survey you would likely need to improve your question. We talk with companies every day who are quick to point out that they already do SEO. Typically, what they point out is that the person or company who built their site did SEO. Originally, we never intended to build websites are were careful to stick to SEO and SEM.
Unfortunately, whenever we were dealing with a client who had someone hosting or who they called when they needed something done to the site, we were always dealing with a person who "knew" SEO. So, the client was using SEO. But, the site would be an SEO disaster, there would be no local presence, and they did not know how to login to Google Analytics.
So, who uses it is not really a question that can be answered to provide any actionable data. I would think you would need to ask specific questions around basic SEO, after developing a framework as to what would or would not constitute knowledge of SEO that would equate to use of SEO. (And then probably a final question of given what you know of SEO, are you currently utilizing that in your business today?)
Good question

I'll be surprised if anyone could give you hard data on this type of thing. There would be so many variables such as what niche the business is in, what location they are in and more.
I suppose if you needed hard data you could do a phone survey of local businesses in your area.

What skills I need for a valuable SEO job
Hello, I want to get a valuable SEO job, something part time - 20 hours a week about, a top notch position - not an entry level $15/hour position. I'm in Boise Idaho. Will you look at my credentials and let me know what additional skills I need to get a good position?: I've been doing SEO since the mid 90s A lot of experience with on-site optimization. One to two years experience with quality content marketing and link building. I regular help write content that is fantastic and use buzzstream and Citation labs to push the content hard. Two years experience writing content that is high quality. six years doing ecommerce seo moderate facebook and twitter experience. I've helped create many facebook pages, and I have moderate experience as to how to best post and optimize on facebook. I've been doing twitter for about a year and have recently learned how to use it to push content or to gain traffic. I know just enough google plus for authorship and building out an account. Lots of experience with keyword research using keyword discovery and Google's tools. A lot of web design experience, mainly html, css, a little javascript and a little php I know my way around Adwords, and I've done about 10 large campaigns. My PCC experience is lacking I know good writing and grammar skills for writing and developing content. Graphical experience with photoshop, fireworks, Adobe Illustrator, of course also excel and word. 6 years of ecommerce customer service experience A couple years of using Open Site Explorer including competitive analysis and link building I may have left some things out. But that's most of it. What areas do I need to master more to get a great SEO job?

Real-Life Negative SEO Study
This isn't so much of a question as an offer The Offer first, then the story. We are currently the target of a sustained negative SEO. This was only discovered in the last 3 or 4 days (Webmaster reports impressions down from 15,000 to 1,600!). I'm not asking for help, I believe we know what to do in order to combat it. My question is whether anyone at MOZ would like to use it as a real-life ongoing case study. We are not a new company and have never dabbled in black hat SEO. All current thinking suggests that this shouldn't have been possible given our age and reputation. A summary of our company/site below: 9 Year old domain $3m annual sales Previous Inc. 500 Fastest Growing Company 25,000 Facebook fans Hundreds of natural links including CNN.com, Washington Post, Inc.com I'm not the best writer and I'm not that technical. I would gladly give the right person full access to anaylics, webmaster tools, sales reports, interviews. Given that this is still ongoing (and there's always a chance we might not recover!) I suspect this would make a great case study for the community given the right author. gfbM8kV

Is it smart to reveal your clients and projects in the Q&A forum? What about on your own SEO blog?
On one hand it seems like having my cake and eating it too: blogging about SEO using my clients as case studies in order to give them a couple backlinks. On the other hand it seems like asking for it from Google or from competitors. Got any advice? And what of mentioning actual domains and brand names when asking questions here in the forum? One one hand it seems like I'd get more specific advice, on the other hand, once again, it seems like it comes with some amount of risk. Any advice? Thanks!
