New Website.. From where to start with a SEO Plan ?

Hi..
We have got two SEO and link builders working here in the office, putting in efforts is not a problem. And we have been doing SEO for our websites since a long time and they all rank well.
Since, I have signed up for SEOMOZ, which is the one stop with all the heavy duty SEO guys, so we would like to get some suggestions from the experts.
Ok here is the question.
We have launched a new website this week and we have got a new SEO client, whose website is 6 months old.
1. What should be a proper SEO plan for a new website ? Got any Plan PDF or Buleprint, which you can send me ?
2. For the client website , he is ranking on 4-7th pages for his 4 keywords. Whats should be the correct way or plan to start doing SEO for them and get them to the first page ?
3. I feel like, doing competitive analysis is lacking with us and we are not good at evaluating that step. Whats the bet way to do competitive analysis ?
4. We are looking to build more and more links to the website . Whats the best way to make links ? Got any SEOMoz Blog post link, which explain this better or any forum thread which has got the tricks for this ?

I appreciate your explanation Gianluca but I still feel my response was appropriate.
Your original suggestion was by participating in blog commenting, I would more likely be viewed as an expert. As I shared, I have no need or desire to be viewed as an expert at this time. I share my knowledge and readers can draw their own conclusion.
You suggest blog commenting leads to higher visibility, higher trust in the community, natural outreach, branding, generating traffic to my site, etc. I have never sought nor desired any of those things.
My past mindset has always been I am one person with a full workload and am quite content. I am visible to my clients. I am trusted by my clients. I don't have a need for anything else right now.
I appreciate you are trying to share your experiences. I noticed you are a heavy participant in blog commenting. I don't wish to discourage you from an activity you enjoy or find productive.
As for EGOL's reply, I think you misunderstood. He shared with Q&A you know you are helping someone directly. With a blog comment, it may never been seen. Even if it is seen, readers may not find it helpful. How often do you go back to a blog article after having read it to check the comments? I never do.
This is one of the great aspects of SEOmoz. It offers something for everyone. Some people just use the tools, or the blogs. Others want a bit of everything.

Hi Ryan... I think you have misunderstood what I wrote (maybe because I used a wrong example).
What I was saying is that if you do a correct use of comment marketing, meant as contributing to the community with your knowledge, your ideas and, why not, also with you doubts, you acquire an higher visibility and, with that, an higher trust in the community.
This trust, then, can lead to a natural outreach. For instance, if I wasn't so recognized here in the SEOmoz community, hardly I would have the followers I have and therefore hardly a post of mine could receive a natural buzz as it receives now. Or, again, without my commenting here, hardly I would have the occasion to enter in a conversation with people that, later, simply because they know me, go read my posts and cite them.
What I mean - and now I think to Brand, not to people - is that a correct use of comment marketing is to offer to you brand a respected voice and trusted. People will start going from the blog to your site generating organic traffic different from Google traffic, creating an important sources' diversification. And you, as link builder, can create connections with other bloggers/webmasters, which make overly easier to do outreach actions.

I think that is the misunderstanding. I can only speak for myself but my responses to Q&As are not designed to have myself viewed as an expert. If that was my focus, I would spend more time polishing my answers rather then proceeding to the next question. I would also divide my time with other sites like searchengineland and numerous other SEO communities.
I consider myself a student of SEO, not an expert, and I am certain I will feel the same way 10 years from now. Students are always open to learning and sharing knowledge. Students are willing to consider their knowledge is in error. In my experience many self-proclaimed experts are arrogant, hoarde "secrets" and are less willing to consider the words of others.
I have never even listed myself in the SEOmoz company directory. During my time at SEOmoz I have turned away multiple requests for SEO work as I have been too busy with my current clients. I have accepted a single consultation with an existing SEO who struggled with a penalty. It was a single 75 minute call with some follow up e-mails.
If it helps to know, I have decided to change my business model. Rather then being a sole SEO provider I have created a company and am having my website built. I will soon be accepting clients, hiring employees and perhaps then it could be beneficial for me to be seen as an "expert" by others, but it has never been the case in the past.

Respectully I disagree. If well done they are a great tool for being recognized as an expert (obviously if you are so). Just look at many of comments here at Seomoz

The activities of blog commenting and Q&A answering are very different.
Blog commenting is like "water cooler conversation" that sometimes is educational.....
...but Q&A is "helping someone" and that is always rewarding.
Big difference to me.

I am at my pc throughout the day and I check in to the Q&A quite often. The questions presented at times challenge my knowledge and understanding of SEO and I find them enjoyable. The ideas presented here by Sha, EGOL, Alan and others pull me outside of the box and I enjoy that as well.
I read the blogs about once every week or so. By the time I get to them, they often have plenty of comments. I don't feel my adding a +1 comment is helpful. If I do add something constructive or have a questions about a blog article, I find it does not get noticed if it isn't amongst the first comments.
If I were to listen to mom, I would spend my free time out looking for "the right woman". I find the SEOmoz Q&A is a lot cheaper!

What Ryan says is perfect...
but i'd like to add another think you should start asap in order to:
- to start the brand recognition of your client's site;
- to put the base for future link buliding outreach
Create social profiles (twtiter, facebook and linkedin to start) for your client and start actions like social media marketing, comment marketing (not comment spam marketing), forum, Q&A sites, guest blogging and so on.
Ideally you client site should have to have a blog, and start using it since the day 1 writing NOT PROMOTIONAL posts about its market area and use that same content in order to perform the the inbound actions suggested above.
On Page is surely the start, but inbound should follow - metaphorically -after 5 minutes-

Everyone will answer this question differently as there are many factors involved. My preference is to focus 100% of my efforts on onpage SEO until the site is solid. Off page SEO, namely link building, never ends. Onsite SEO can be completed to a point and then you move on.
Otherwise there is a need for keyword analysis. The point is not only to get the site to the 1st page, but to the top 3 results. Research shows the overwhelming majority of traffic is acquired by the top 3 results. Lower results still have value, especially on keywords with a lot of traffic, but you really want to focus on getting in the top 3.
I feel like, doing competitive analysis is lacking with us and we are not good at evaluating that step. Whats the bet way to do competitive analysis ?
The first step is visiting your top 3 competitor's sites. Examine every detail from the navigation to their content to their overall design and layout. Try to determine where your competitors are doing a better job then you are and catch up or beat them. Once the onsite analysis is complete, it is time to examine links.

If I have two brands and I market one in English (BrandA.com) and one in Spanish (BrandB.com), and the websites are identical but in different languages, would that have a negative impact on SEO due to duplicate content?
I have a client who wants a website in Spanish and one in English. Typically we would use a multi-language plugin for a single site (brandA.com/en or /es), but this client markets to their Spanish-speaking constituents under a different brand. So I am wondering if we have BrandA.com in English, and the exact same content in Spanish at BrandB.com if there will be negative SEO implications and/or if it will be recognized as duplicate content by search engines?

SEO implications of changing Date/Time format on website
Looking for some advice on an area that I can't seem to find much research about online. Since starting our website, it's always been hosted in the UK and targeting UK visitors. That means we always had the date/time format of the website as DD.MM.YY for example. We've now changed business focus and are targeting US visitors. We recently moved the site over to US hosting, and our web developers have instructed that we change to US date/time format (MM.DD.YY). My question is, are there any implications on doing this from an SEO perspective? Obviously, all our historic blog posts will need to have their date updated from, for example, 9 July to July 9. Does this make any difference at all? Anyone got any insights as to what best practice with this is? Cheers.

Migration to a new domain
Hi everyone, So i have one project where I'm planning to move current content on new domain, two reasons: 1. It seems current domain has some google penalty (backlink related, not manual) 2. Client wants rebranding and already has domain with new brand name. So as content is high quality and there is no content related penalty from google, what would be the best way to migrate existing content without passing any penalty AND without Google treating it as duplicate content. If i do 301 i suspect any penalty there is might follow, if i just copy existing content it won't be original content, what is the best solution here? Thanks

SEO'ing a sports advice website
Hi Team Moz, Despite being in tech/product development for 10+ years, I'm relatively new to SEO (and completely new to this forum) so was hoping for community advice before I dive in to see how Google likes (or perhaps doesn't) my soon to be built content. I'm building a site (BetSharper, an early-stage work in progress) that will deliver practical, data orientated predictive advice prior to sporting events commencing. The initial user personas I am targeting would need advice on specific games so, as an example, I would build a specific page for the upcoming Stanley Cup Game 1 between the Capitals and the Tampa Bay Lighting. I'm in the midst of keyword research and believe I have found some easier to achieve initial keywords (I'm realistic, building my DA will take time!) that include the team names but don't reference dates or state of the tournament. The question is, hypothetically if I ranked for this page for this sporting event this year, would it make sense to refresh the same page with 2019 matchup content when they meet again next year, or create a new page? I am assuming I would be targeting the same intended keywords but wondering if I get google credit for 2018 engagement post 2019 refresh. Or should I start fresh with a new page and specifically target keywords afresh each time? I read some background info on canonical tabs but wasn't sure if it was relevant in my case. I hope I've managed to articulate myself on what feels like an edge case within the wonderful world of SEO. Any advice the community delivers would be much appreciated...... Kind Regards James.

SEO Strategy for Microsite
I am working on a project to build a microsite of sorts that will represent a joint program between two large organizations with established web presences and strong domains. Each of the organizations has dedicated sections on their sites speaking to the program, but the leadership has decided the joint program deserves it's own site with dedicated content. The two larger sites perform very well for SEO, and I don't necessarily want to jeopordize thir rankings by delivering content that competes directly with them. So I am doing some keyword research to find some opportunities that will alllow me to use the new site to target keywords not yet being captialized by the larger sites. My grand scheme is to have the three sites targeting the broadest array of keywords possible, thus maximizing exposure and avoiding competition. Here is the rub: the content between the three sites will be different but very similar, and there will be plenty of cross linking, especially from the existing sites to the new site, as we grow the brand of the joint program. I'm curious to here some expert opinions on what the puitfalls of the strategy are and what are some of the things I can do to avoid falling in the black hat category - I recognize that proliferating sites around a single topic and cross linking them is black hat. The organizations simply want to build a brand around a joint program and we are striggling to do that without a dedicated website.

A Noob's SEO Plan of attack... can you critique it for me?
I've been digging my teeth into SEO for a solid 1.5 weeks or so now and I've learned a tremendous amount. However, I realize I have only scratched the surface still. One of the hardest things I've struggled with is the sheer amount of information and feeling overwhelmed. I finally think I've found a decent path. Please critique and offer input, it would be much appreciated. Step One: Site Architecture I run an online proofreading & editing service. That being said, there are lots of different segment we would eventually like to rank for other than the catch-all phrases like 'proofreading service'. For example, 'essay editing', 'resume editing', 'book editing', or even 'law school personal statement editing'. I feel that my first step is to understand how my site is built to handle this plan now, and into the future. Right now we simply have the homepage and one segment: kibin.com/essay-editing. Eventually, we will have a services page that serves almost like a site-map, showing all of our different services and linking to them. Step Two: Page Anatomy I know it is important to have a well defined anatomy to these services pages. For example, we've done a decent job with 'above the fold' content, but now understand the importance of putting the same type of care in below the fold. The plan here is to have a section for recent blog posts that pertain to that subject in a section titled "Essay Editing and Essay Writing Tips & Advice", or something to that effect. Also including some social sharing options, other resources, and an 'about us' section to assist with keyword optimization is in the plan. Step Three: Page Optimization Once we're done with Step Two, I feel that we'll finally be ready to truly optimize each of our pages. We've down some of this already, but probably less than 50%. You can see evidence of this on our essay editing page and proofreading rates page. So, the goal here is to find the most relevant keywords for each page and optimize for those to the point we have A grades on our on-page optimization reports. Step Four: Content/Passive Link Building The bones for our content strategy is in place. We have sharing links on blog posts already in place and a slight social media presence already. I admit, the blog needs some tightening up, and we can do a lot more on our social channels. However, I feel we need to start by creating content that our audience is interested in and interacting with them on a consistent basis. I do not feel like I should be chasing link building strategies or guest blog posts at this time. PLEASE correct me if I'm off base here, but only after reading step five: Step Five: Active Link Building My bias is to get some solid months of creating content and building a good social media presence where people are obviously interacting with our posts and sharing our content. My reasoning is that it will make it much easier for me to reach out to bloggers for guest posts as we'll be much more reputable after spending time doing step 4. Is this poor thinking? Should I try to get some guest blog posts in during step 4 instead? Step Six: Test, Measure, Refine I'll admit, I have yet to really dive into learning about the different ways to measure our SEO efforts. Besides being set up with our first campaign as an SEOPro Member and having 100 or so keywords and phrases we're tracking... I'm really not sure what else to do at this point. However, I feel we'll be able to measure the popularity of each blog post by number of comments, shares, new links, etc. once I reach step 6. Is there something vital I'm missing or have forgotten here? I'm sorry for the long winded post, but I'm trying to get my thoughts straight before we start cranking on this plan. Thank you so much!
