Why did Google reject us from Google News?
-
I submitted our site, http://www.styleblueprint.com to Google to pontentially be a local news source in Nashville. I received the following note back:
We reviewed your site and are unable to include it in Google News at this
time. We have certain guidelines in place regarding the quality of sites
which are included in the Google News index. Please feel free to review
these guidelines at the following link:http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769#3
Clicking the link, it anchors to the section that says:
These quality guidelines cover the most common forms of deceptive or manipulative behavior, but Google may respond negatively to other misleading practices not listed here (e.g. tricking users by registering misspellings of well-known websites). It's not safe to assume that just because a specific deceptive technique isn't included on this page, Google approves of it. Webmasters who spend their energies upholding the spirit of the basic principles will provide a much better user experience and subsequently enjoy better ranking than those who spend their time looking for loopholes they can exploit. etc...
Now we have never intentionally tried to do anything deceptive for our rankings. I am new to SEOmoz and new to SEO optimization in general. I am working through the errors report on our campaign site but I cannot tell what they are dinging us for. Whatever it is we will be happy to fix it.
All thoughts greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Jay

I didn't do an in-depth check of your site, but as long as you're still getting your Google organic traffic I think you're fine. It is hard to get into news, and the appearance of the site really shouts blog and not news site.
If you haven't already, it's always a good idea to verify your site in Google Webmaster Tools. If you have some type of problem with your site, you'll often get a notice there. There's also lots of interesting tidbits of information you can find in that account that you can't see if you're not verified (more information about incoming links, for example).

Fair enough, but they are publishing long articles 5 days a week. I wish there was another term besides "blog" for it but cest la vie. My biggest worry is they indicated we were a bad actor in the email response.

Your site looks more like a blog and less like a news site. In the Google News Forum Publisher FAQ (http://www.google.com/support/news_pub/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=151309) Google has the following:
Can I suggest my personal website for inclusion in Google News?
At the moment, Google News tends not to include articles from personal websites and blogs. That would be my guess is that it looks like a (very nice) blog about the area, but not necessarily a news site.

I am okay if we don't make it in - I just don't want to be doing something wrong from a SEO standpoint. Thank, this is good info.

From my expeirence getting into Google news is not easy.
Some key factors include
- Original content 350+ characters long (multiple versions each week, even daily content)
*Multiple authors of the content.
*Proper attribution (Is the site correctly set up for Google news)
*Response time
*Having a Google news site map.
*Article's full text needs to have a unique URL that does not change. Google cannot include sites in Google News that display multiple articles at the same URL.
I hope this helps.

Does Google want contact numbers in the meta description?!
Reading up it seems like there's complete free reign to enter what you want in the meta description and they are not considered a direct ranking signal However I have added contact numbers to the meta descriptions for around 20 reasonably high ranking pages for my company and it seems to have had a negative effect (taken screen grabs and previous rankings) More strangely when you 'inspect' the page the meta description features the desired number yet when you find the page in the serps the meta description just does not feature the number (page has been cached and the description does not carry on) I'm wondering whether such direct changes are seen as spam and therefore negative to the page?

How Do You Know or Find Out if You've been hit by a Google Penalty?
Hi Moz Community, How do you find out if you have been hit with a Google Penalty? Thanks, Gary

What penalty would cause this traffic drop (Google Analytic Screenshot)
This ecommerce site was hit (mostly) slowly by updates but there is nothing in GWT. Below is the graph. Keep in mind that most of our traffic is return customers, so the drops don't look dramatic, but they are. "New Visitors" doesn't show the drop. This is a "Daily" Google Analytics setting. The drop I've circled is May 23-May 24, 2013. It was a huge hit in non-return customers. This graph is "Unique Visitors" I don't know why the "New Visitors" graph is not showing the dip Although we had some big drops, a lot of the drop was gradual. Any help in identifying what could be causing the problem is appreciated. ga.png

Has google done well with these search results?
I am struggling to grasp the new logic behind google, my understanding was that they wanted to return more related searches so that the search matched the results giving people exactly what they are looking for from trusted suppliers. However I work in the vacation rental niche and I have found that the individual long tail searches have started to become less valuable as they are no longer giving the exact property. Here is a screenshot of the top 10 results for the key phrase "10 bedroom villas in quinta do lago" Position 1 & 2 are good results and would be expected however the next 7 positions are completely not related to the search, yes it is quinta do lago. But I am looking specifically for a 10 bedroom villa, none of these pages offer 10 bedroom villas. I actually found my listing outside the top 20 and mine is a 10 bedroom villa in quinta do lago. Does anyone have anything that can enlighten me on this? Thanks Andy 0bqdRJi

Is this website being punished by Google?
Hi, I just took over the SEO for a friend of mine's website. Is this website being punished by Google? It has a strong link score, the homepage needs work as far as Key wording goes but it does not appear in Google's top 100 for any keyword. I am not sure that the last SEO company did some harm. Can anyone give me some tips on getting my friend back into the mix? www.wallybuysell.com

Link Building after Google updates!
Hello All, I just wanted to ask the question to start a discussion on link building after the Google Updates. I haven't been very proactive lately with regards to link building due to the updates and not wanting to get penalised! Are there any link building trends/techniques people are using since the changes? Thanks, seo_123

Are there any "legitimate" paid links in Google's eyes?
The news about paid link campaigns is so frequent, that I have to ask the question....does Google allow any paid links? Aside from SEO, paid links can have visibility value. Much like an exit sign on the highway, the paid link says "Get off here"

Can you set up a Google Local account under a PO Box?
I have a client that wants a Google local listing in a town he serves but does not have a physical location. Is it an issue to share an address with an existing company? Is is it better to use a P.O. Box? or is there a forwarding address company? Is this considered a black hat Local SEO tactic?
