Hi,
Quick question;
I have set up a micro site in which i was going to take some of the content from my reviews and recipes my customers have posted and have them placed on my other site.
The site i currently have is a large site receiving over 200,00 visitors every day.
Will this be affected as duplicate content if i was to do this as i do not want to affect my rankings. Any suggestions what i can do to get round this?

There's no easy way around this. Your original site won't be affected but your new site will struggle to rank if the pages are all duplicate.
What you can do is add unique content to each page and simply integrate small sections of your content with the duplicate reviews and recipes. It's really not ideal though but it will give you a much better chance of indexing well.
However
If your reviews and recipes have their own URL then you can use a rel canonical redirect. This will transfer all PageRank to the new review and recipe pages without redirecting the user.
Let's say for example that you don't care about your original site ranking for reviews:
You have a page with a bunch of reviews down the bottom that are duplicate of the review pages themselves - whack a in the header and then for the individual review pages stick in a . That's of course if you don't want your reviews ranking on your original page - something that I would doubt to be the case if you're getting 20,000 visits a day.

You can get past the duplicate content issue by adding rel canonical tag to your original website. Typically, duplicate content issue arises if the content is more than 40-45% similar to the original content.
You can also block the spider access to the duplicate pages on the micro site by using meta robots tags.

Will the reviews be coming from multiple sites? If so, I'd think a mix of the content from various sites will be fine. Google loves testimonials.

It won't affect your main site at all - but the micro site won't rank. It's a new site with duplicate content - that for sure won't rank in search engines. However if you don't need this micro site to rank you are safe - duplicate content is not a penalty issue - you just don't rank with it.

However, we also have a lot of old blog content, which is, because of seasonality and trendiness, outdated and doesn't drive traffic anymore. It actually is just worthless content. (Not only as a traffic driver, this also counts for extremely low to none internal driven traffic (both internal search and internal navigation). We have about 4.000+ blogs of which about 100 drive the most traffic (mostly incited by e-mail and social campaigns and internal navigation promoted on important category landing pages during some period. Is it a bad signal to search engines to delete these old content pages? I.a.: going from a content-rich to a content-poor site?

Use old content from Archive

SEO for a News based site : Outdated content
How do we maintain the SEO of a 5 year old News content based site? How should we deal with 3-4 year old content, which are outdated or not searched? Some of them are still useful as archiving/history of a topic..but not searched.... ?? Should we no-index them? or should we keep it like that?

content and video for our site. Our visitors also contribute stories and/or
tips that add to the content on our domain. In short, our content is original. A site that often appears alongside us in the SERPs in the markets where we work full-time is accidentin.com. They are a site that only syndicates accident news and offers little original content. (They also allow users to submit their own accident stories, and the entries index quickly and are sometimes viewed by hundreds of people in the same day. What's perplexing is that these entires are isolated incidents that have little to no media value, yet they do extremely well.) The link profile is virtually non-existent. There are approximately 6 linking domains. I don't rest my bets with Quantcast figures, but accidentin does use their pixel sourcing and the figures indicate that they are receiving up to 80k visitors a day in some instances. Not too shabby for the Flying Dutchman of accident news sites. 🙂 I understand that it's common to see news sites syndicate from the AP, etc., and traffic accident news is not going to have a lot of competition (in most instances), but the real shocker is that accidentin will sometimes appear as the first or second result above the original sources. What the...!? The question: does anyone have a guess as to what is making it perform so well? While looking at their model, I'm wondering if we're not silly to syndicate news in the states where we don't have actual staff? Best way to avoid duplicate content issues here.
I am planning to write an article that refutes some claims made in another article. The original article is a 20 page pdf. What I plan to do is to take quotes from this PDF and then under each quote write my arguments for or against the quote. If I take direct quotes from the article, is Google likely to see this as duplicate content?
