Should we syndicate content?

Hello Mozzers!
Our company (FindMyAccident) is an accident news site. The goal is to roll our reporting out to all 50 states; currently, we operate full-time in 7 states.
To date, the largest expenditure is our writing staff. We hire professional
journalists who work with police departments and other sources to develop written
content and video for our site. Our visitors also contribute stories and/or
tips that add to the content on our domain. In short, our content is original.A site that often appears alongside us in the SERPs in the markets where we work full-time is accidentin.com. They are a site that only syndicates accident news and offers little original content. (They also allow users to submit their own accident stories, and the entries index quickly and are sometimes viewed by hundreds of people in the same day. What's perplexing is that these entires are isolated incidents that have little to no media value, yet they do extremely well.)
The link profile is virtually non-existent. There are approximately 6 linking domains.
I don't rest my bets with Quantcast figures, but accidentin does use their pixel sourcing and the figures indicate that they are receiving up to 80k visitors a day in some instances. Not too shabby for the Flying Dutchman of accident news sites.
I understand that it's common to see news sites syndicate from the AP, etc., and traffic accident news is not going to have a lot of competition (in most instances), but the real shocker is that accidentin will sometimes appear as the first or second result above the original sources. What the...!?
The question: does anyone have a guess as to what is making it perform so well?
While looking at their model, I'm wondering if we're not silly to syndicate news in the states where we don't have actual staff? It would seem we could attract more traffic by setting up syndication in our vacant states.
Should the Panda updates have any effect on their site?

I've always been considered syndication a no-no.
But if your competitor accidentin is ranking well, it could be a number of factors.
If they a syndicating and are always updated frequently, this could be a factor. Google loves freshness and freshness usually ranks better than actual content.
Lets say NYTimes reports something, it will take a 30+minutes for other publishing companies to report the same thing because they don't syndicate it, they rewrite it with same details or more details(investigative journalism). So if they are reporting it and accidentin is reporting it right away, this could be why it ranks well. Because they beat the others to it, and others might start using them as a source, which then would provide them a link to that page.
One other thing that could be a factor, it that the domain is partial match. The partial match definitely can help in ranking better with people searching for "accident in new york" "accident in california" etc.
Also things like social media can help boost a SERP of a site if they get enough shares or likes etc. Many factors can help them.
Sorry for the spam on text, I am on lunch and can't type too coherently. But IMO, the top suspects are the domain name and freshness of content.

The etiquette of reproducing someone else's content
Hello - Here is a scenario, representative of something that I just saw play out. Site A is a new blog about travel (as an example topic) Site B is an older, established blog about travel Site C is a new blog launched and owned by Site B that focuses on a particular travel niche (luxury travel, for example) Here is what happens next Site A writes an original piece of content Site C then republishes Site A's content, paraphrasing all of the text, but giving Site A credit with a link Site B (the established site) publishes a blurb about the article, directing readers with a link to "read more" on Site C. It credits Site A as the original author, but does not link to it. If you were able to follow that, here is what I would like to know. Did Site C do anything wrong by republishing a paraphrased version of Site A's content, even though it gave credit with a link? Did Site B do anything wrong by linking to Site C (which is for all intents and purposes the same website), but not linking to Site A (the original source)? My sense is that the established blog (Site B) is trying to get it's new publication (Site C) to outrank the original author (Site A) using its own content. In general though, I am curious to get some thoughts on this situation because it raises a few ethical questions that I am not sure about, namely: Is there anything wrong with publishing "spun" content, if it is done well and links back to the source? Is there anything wrong with linking to a republished version of an article on a sister website, rather than linking to the original article. Thanks

Im currently working with a new client and their goal is to create the absolute best content in their industry. I've seen alot of articles on WHY to create the best content but not a lot on HOW to create the best content. Can anyone recommend a article they recall which talked more about the HOW. Is this duplicate content?
I'm optimizing a Magento site and have a question regarding duplicate content. Currently, you can dig down to an individual product listings with URLs similar to this: (1) http://www.foo.com/category/sub-category/sub-sub-category/item.html However, we also have a "Top 50" area, with a link to the same page; however, the URL for that page is: (2) http://www.foo.com/item.html Both are dynamic, so a static page for (2) with different content is out of the question. I asked IT to have both (1) and (2) point to exactly the same page, within the same categor(ies), but they said I would have choose one or the other So, here are my questions: Will Google consider the pages to be duplicates of each other, and thus incur a penalty; If I were to choose one structure, which would be the "friendliest?" I've think I've come across questions similar to this in Q&A, but haven't been able to locate them; so, I'm sorry to be posting a "duplicate question." I've been busy writing completely different product descriptions, nice and deep and value-rich, for more than 300 items and categories and am only now starting to look at current SEO protocols; I'm hoping to ask Google for a site reevaluation in another 2 weeks or so. How can I rank using translated content?
My friend has a website with similar content to mine, in a different language however. He has allowed me to translate his content if I link to it every post (can be nofollow). Does Google penalize me for clearly translated content? How can I make sure it ranks well? BTW, if I convince him that I don't link to him, is it better SEO-wise? Best,

Blogger & Blogspot Content - Move Across To Own Domain?
Hey, A few new clients have blogs hosted on blogger & blogspot, the first advice of mine is to set up a blog hosted on their company domain. It's usually easy to convince them of the benefits. What should happen to all the content on the existing blog? One blog in question has over 100 entries, good content with a lot of links back to the business domain. The blog itself has less than 10 links pointing in but a domain mozrank 3.5. In this example, my gut is telling me to leave it as is, and start fresh on the own domain. What about if there's less then 10 posts? At what point should the content be moved over to the new blog? Thanks for your thoughts.
