New domain ranking higher. Looks like spam backlinks.

A new site has appeared in our industry, and has taken the number 1 spot that we had for some time (years), in addition to some other great rankings above us for good keywords.
The site to my eyes is no better than ours, but what it does have is lots of links from different root domains.
However these root domains are spam, as far as I can see. You know the type, nonsensical blog comments, even links in nonsensical content on other sites. You couldn't make any sense out of the text if you tried.
I think this is the reason this site is ranked above ours now. His domain and pages have higher mozTrust and mozRank already, despite it being a brand new site.
I realise the importance of incoming links, especially from different, good quality individual domains, but my question is, do we join him by getting spammy links everywhere?

with duplicate content, rather then beiong penanlized, it is more lilkly that you will just not get credit for both. But witch one will get the credit www or non www. To make sure of this you need to 301
you have links in your site pointing to images that use both www and non www. so search engines will follow them as if the are going to a new site. only being images may not be so harmfull. but lets say some one links to you, but use non www, then your www rankings will not benifit. futhermore the SE' will then crawl the rest of the site and then you now have a problem site wide.
buy the way even useing uppercase and lower case is seem as 2 different urls.
I see you 301 is in place, but you need to find all the refs to the non www and fix them

Do you think that will make much difference? You say they rank as different sites, but I've never seen them both (www and non-www) in the same list? Presumably then that would be because they are somehow being penalised for duplication...

Yes thats one factor, but SE's see www and non www as different sites. Your rank is split between the 2. if you 301 one to the other then you merge any rank they have into the one domain.

Thanks for your advice Alan. I don't actually want to copy them as I have always believed doing the "correct" thing will work in the long term.
I've always thought to myself "if Google were watching me right now, would they approve of doing this" and if the answer were no, then it's not a good thing to do.
Regards the www, why is this an important issue? Is it regards "duplicate" content?

I once was temped to get cheap links, and yes it worked for a time. i have about 200 links each for about 4 sites, over a few months they all dispapeared.
I did notice that your site is accessable via www and non www.
If you fix that with a 301 you may get the boost you need.

It's in Google. It's annoying because it's clearly nonsense linking.
The reason I asked is because I know they "might" discount the links, but I've no idea if they will, or how long it will take. In the meantime we're stuck with losing revenue and having no idea whether to fight fire with fire.
I'd love to be able to go out and get decent one-way links from other sites, but in this industry and with what we do, that's just, well it's not possible to be honest...

I assume google, they will eventualy discount the links, Maybe

Hidden Backlinks
Hi, I hope someone can help me with this. We have a competitor who appears to be ranking No1 for a competitive search term with a very lame site and above some authoritative sites. He has been here for some time as well. When we check out his back link profile through OSE, Majestic and Ahrefs they show as only 3 backlinks from no PR sites. However, someone pointed out that they could be using a link network that is blocking every crawler apart from Google, Yahoo and BIng. I would like to know if there is a way to confirm this. For instance I know that we can use screaming frog to mimic Googlebot, however, if there a way to reveal the real backlinks to a site like this using any tools. Thanks

Backlink question
Hi all. Here's the scenario. There is a company who provide financial services to their online clients. On ALL their clients sites they have a "payments-by-us" style logo with backlink to their homepage domain name. This means they have over 3,000 links from a multitude of non-related websites - with just 3 or 4 anchor text keywords in these backlinks. No surprise they have been hit by Penguin My questions What it the best practice for these type of linking LOGO's. Should they link to a dedicated page,and NOT the homepage? Should they have branded + anchor text, no text, or just branded? or a combination of each Should they even be a link at all as they are coming from such a diverse group of sites? I understand how Penguin penalises for overuse of money word keywords as anchor text. This is something that has definitely happened here (by the bucket load) ... Assume the anchor text is "Green Chips Finance" and that phrase is also overused and a bit "stuffy" in their homepage. Here's my question - could simply lowering the prominence / significance of "Green Chips Finance" on the actual home page, help in reducing the impact of the damage caused by the thousands of backlinks with "Green Chips Finance" as the anchor text? I say this as they have a similar number of back links saying "Red Chips Finance", but there is no mention of "Red Chips Finance" on their homepage other than in the keywords and a couple of standard text mentions (no H1, H2, alt text etc) ... interestingly, "Red Chips Finance" (not the real words) is Google No1 whereas "Green Chips Finance" has been demoted from longtime No1 to about 4. A backlinks question
Hi all Could do with a second opinion on this one if anyone has a moment please. Recent Google updates have targeted overally optimised backlink profiles as they are clearly for seo purposes and not natural. The question I have is how does this relate to an ecommerce website? If I sell 'blue 1980 aged cheese' (I know nothing about cheese so perhaps not the best example!!) and I have a url on my shop domain.com/store/blue-1980-aged-cheese with the product name as the page title along with the domain name. If I were to get backlinks pointing to this page using the anchor of 'blue 1980 aged cheese' (and other variations of that, blue cheese, aged blue cheese etc) would this be considered to be too optimised? Given the page is about this item then surely it could be considered natural that people link using the product name, as well as using the site name and the domain url Any thoughts please Thanks, Carl

Looking for some help on disavow
I received a message from Google WMT on July 23rd about unnatural links to my site. And my ecommerce site suffered a big drop on sept 29th about 70% drop in organic traffic. My it guys have discovered that our past seo companies placed ton of bad links to our site. we have contacted lots of these companies for 3 weeks after we lost our traffic to remove their links. Some of them did remove them i believe and most of them did not even reply back. We have learned about the disavow tool in 3 rd week in Oct after that we have compiled the links and submitted the file on Oct 22nd and submitted a reconsideration on Oct 23rd. We got a reply back on Nov 12th saying that "Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes." I did not participate in any link schemes or otherwise suggested practice here. So my question at this point is, is it possible that google' quality team did not see the file or did not take it in to consideration. How long would it take this tool to work? is there an example of this file where i can see how the format should be if any different than how we had it. my site is goldenageusa.com Thank you

Exact Domain Match Ranking Very Well

The problem Im having is getting above them, along with other competitors that have a high DA. They have little or no content on the page but rank very well. How Many Backlinks Per Day
I am starting to do some manual back-linking for a medium competition word with high traffic. I plan to start back linking with like niche blogs with non spam comments, like niche directories, like niche forums, and guest blogging. My domain is over 3 years old and ranks for multiple keywords, but I'm going to concentrate specifically on this keyword, but need to know how many links to back-link a day. Again none of these will be spam, but will be of real quality. I was thinking 10-20 a day, but unsure.

Is it safe to do a lot of links to a new post on an old domain?
Hi, I was wondering as far as being aggressive in link building can you add a lot of links to a new post on an aged domain? How many would you say is too much for the new pages if the over all domain has about 40k links? I am just wondering of a safe round about number monthly that can be done although I do realize this is site specific. I would trust your best guess. Thanks, ~JImmy
