Can I reduce number of on page links by just adding "no follow" tags to duplicate links
-
Our site works on templates and we essentially have a link pointing to the same place 3 times on most pages. The links are images not text.
We are over 100 links on our on page attributes, and ranking fairly well for key SERPS our core pages are optimized for.
I am thinking I should engage in some on-page link juice sculpting and add some "no follow" tags to 2 of the 3 repeated links.
Although that being said the Moz's on page optimizer is not saying I have link cannibalization.
Any thoughts guys? Hope this scenario makes sense.

Hey Alex,
Hit the "oak furniture" analogy on the head there. I could go through our core pages disabling the canalizing link. So the Oak furniture didn't work on the oak page because the user is already there.
The CMS is reliable and a little FUGLY I can't get a nice font to work and align how I want so resorted to images.
How much of an edge do you think we are missing because of this issue? can you quantify it?Essentially this is not going to boost usability massively, just sculpt link juice hopefully.
-
Do you mean keyword cannibalisation - where different pages are targeting the same keyword? You have numerous pages where the main key phrase in the title tag and elsewhere on-page includes "oak furniture" for example.
I don't have much experience with CMS's so apologies if my question sounds a bit dumb, is it not as simple as selecting a default size and font like Arial or Helvetica?
-
I agree Alex the problem comes with link cannibalization. As the site works from templates there is a lot of variation with how the text renders across browsers so from a user point of view and with all the issues with w3c validation images were the best way to go.
Its a toss up between the links looking ugly and link juice.
-
Again, if you think it will benefit the human user. I'm hesitant to give more specific advice when I haven't seen the site in question. You can always take advantage of image alt attributes if you're not already.
EDIT - if you're talking about The Furniture Market, the navigation links on the left and top would definitely be better as text.
-
From our home page we have all image links to our core pages, maybe I should add some exact match anchor text links to our core pages from there you mean?
It's an old CMS we are on but I still think I can squeeze some extra performance out of it.
-
Not necessarily - the 100 links is just a warning - not an error. I can't speak for SEOmoz but I think that number comes from the days when search engine crawlers weren't so sophisticated; the likes of Google have no problem crawling a lot of on page links now. If it would make it a better user experience to remove some links, then go ahead.
This is an old post - be aware that in most situations it's probably only the anchor text of the first repeated link that counts - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/results-of-google-experimentation-only-the-first-anchor-text-counts - so that's a possibility for improving your link optimisation. Another way to optimise your site using links is to be aware that links in body text have a higher value than those in sidebars and footers - it's a good way to link to other internal content.
-
Hey Alex,
So you would go for more of a 'link amputation' approach ?
-
I'd say it's not worth it these days; if you add nofollow to a link, the link juice disappears completely, e.g. if you have 10 followed links on a page (and 10 links in total), they'll each get 10% of the link juice. If you make 1 of those 10 links nofollow, the other 9 links will still only get the same amount of link juice - 10% will be lost completely to the nofollow. It used to be the case where the link juice was shared between the number of followed links, but not any more.

Using "nofollow" internally can help with crawl budget?
Hello everyone. I was reading this article on semrush.com, published the last year, and I'd like to know your thoughts about it: https://www.semrush.com/blog/does-google-crawl-relnofollow-at-all/ Is that really the case? I thought that Google crawls and "follows" nofollowed tagged links even though doesn't pass any PR to the destination link. If instead Google really doesn't crawl internal links tagged as "nofollow", can that really help with crawl budget?

404 Pages. Can I change it to do this without getting penalized ? I want to lower our bounce rate from these pages to encourage the user to continue on the site
Hi All, We have been streaming our site and got rid of thousands of pages for redundant locations (Basically these used to be virtual locations where we didn't have a depot although we did deliver there and most of them was duplicate/thin content etc ). Most of them have little if any link value and I didn't want to 301 all of them as we already have quite a few 301's already We currently display a 404 page but I want to improve on this. Current 404 page is - http://goo.gl/rFRNMt I can get my developer to change it, so it will still be a 404 page but the user will see the relevant category page instead ? So it will look like this - http://goo.gl/Rc8YP8 . We could also use Java script to show the location name etc... Would be be okay ? or would google see this as cheating. basically I want to lower our bounce rates from these pages but still be attractive enough for the user to continue in the site and not go away. If this is not a good idea, then any recommendations on improving our current 404 would be greatly appreciated. thanks Pete

Effect of Removing Footer Links In all Pages Except Home Page
Dear MOZ Community: In an effort to improve the user interface of our business website (a New York CIty commercial real estate agency) my designer eliminated a standardized footer containing links to about 20 pages. The new design maintains this footer on the home page, but all other pages (about 600 eliminate the footer). The new design does a very good job eliminating non essential items. Most of the changes remove or reduce the size of unnecessary design elements. The footer removal is the only change really effect the link structure. The new design is not launched yet. Hoping to receive some good advice from the MOZ community before proceeding My concern is that removing these links could have an adverse or unpredictable effect on ranking. Last Summer we launched a completely redesigned version of the site and our ranking collapsed for 3 months. However unlike the previous upgrade this modifications does not URL names, tags, text or any major element. Only major change is the footer removal. Some of the footer pages provide good (not critical) info for visitors. Note the footer will still appear on the home page but will be removed on the interior pages. Are we risking any detrimental ranking effect by removing this footer? Can we compensate by adding text links to these pages if the links from the footer are removed? Seems irregular to have a home page footer but no footer on the other pages. Are we inviting any downgrade, penalty, adverse SEO effect by implementing this? I very much like the new design but do not want to risk a fall in rank and traffic. Thanks for your input!!!

To Many Links On Page Problem
Hello My Moz report is showing I have an error for too many links on my sitemap and blog. The links on both pages are relevant and I'm not sure if this has to be sorted out, as I would have thought Google would expect sitemaps and blogs to have lots of links. If I were to reduce the number of links how much of a positive affect would it have on my site? If any of you feel it is best practice to reduce number of links on these particular pages, do you have any suggestions on how I can tackle this? http://www.dradept.com/blog.php http://www.dradept.com/sitemap.php Thank you Christina

Disabling a website - What to do with "link juice"?
Hi I built a website for a client a long time ago now and for a number of reasons I have decided to shut down the website. None payment being one of the reasons! My question to all you SEO guru's out there is, what should I do with 301 redirects. The site is an e-commerce based website and my personal website is simply advertising my services and portfolio. If I 301 redirect all the traffic from the customer website, will there be any issue with Google (or any search engine) seeing that my website is receiving traffic for search phrases such as "Coffee Mugs"? I.e. abolutely no relevance at all to my website content! My worry is my site could be penalised for a flurry of thousands of redirected links. Also, if I redirect everything to my site and the customer decides to pay the bill in due course, I will then remove the redirects - I guess this will have a massive impact on the rankings of the site? Thanks for reading and any advice.

Can Linking Between Your Own Sites Excessively Be a Penguin No-No?
I have a bunch of travel-related sites that for a long time dominated google.com.au without any intensive SEO whatsoever. Aside from solid on-page content and meta tag, I did no link building. However, all of my sites are heavily interlinked, and I think they are linked with do follow links and lots of anchor texts. Here are a few of them: www.beautifulpacific.com www.beautifulfiji.com www.beautifulcooklands.com My idea in inter-linking them was to create a kind of branded "Beautiful" nexus of sites. However, when Penguin hit -- which I believe was on April 27th -- search traffic crashed, and has crashed over and over again. I've read that Penguin penalized over-optimization vis a vis anchor text links. I don't have a lot of inbound links like these, but they are everywhere among my sites. Is it possible that all of my text links have hurt me with Penguin? Thanks to everyone in advance for your time and attention. I really appreciate it. -Mike

Does having multiple links to the same page influence the Link juice this page is able to pass
Say you have a page and it has 4 outgoing links to the same internal page. In the original Pagerank algo if these links were links to an page outside your own domain, this would mean that the linkjuice this page is able to pass would be devided by 4. The thing is i'm not sure if this is also the case when the outgoing link, is linking to a page on your own domain. I would say that outgoing links (whatever the destination) will use some of your link juice, so it would be better to have 1 outgoing link instead of 4 to the same destination, the the destination will profit more form that link. What are you're thoughts?
