I am going to respond in two different ways.....
If the manufacturing site is sooooo important that you feel compelled to link to it 10,000 times then maybe you should only have one website?
If I owned two websites on the same topic I would seriously consider combining them for SEO reasons. That gives you a single site with all of the strengths of the two sites together.

Yep, content that is opened with a click does not pull long tail traffic. It has been working that way for at least two years.
We had pages and thought that putting some details behind a click would improve the look of the pages. Yep, it did, then the traffic flow slowly dried up. Put that content back into the open and the traffic very slowly grew back.
I think that google is smart enough to tell nav code from content.
Most people who do this are probably wasting their time.
I put the nav code at the top... it contains some of my most important links.
Think about it.... If you think that Google can't identify nav code then this is like putting the links to your most important category pages in the footer. Do you really want to do that?
I agree with Marcus... When you make everything important then nothing is important.
I like Robert's ideas about making a site structure that segregates the topics by folder and by internal linking.
My sites have very diverse topics and they rank well. I believe that it is more about the vigor of your publishing efforts, the quality of your content, and how well your visitors engage it.
You are going to use different html mark-up for the image and the h1.
They are not equivalent.
If you use the image you can add alt text but that is not going to be the same as H1 - less effective in my opinion.
If you can't get H1 into your site any other way then loss of the H1 will be part of the cost of your redesign.
If this was my site I would not give up H1 for an artsy image.
