In that situation I would honestly recommend hiring a professional who has experience in this type of work.

RE: Keyword Difficulty Tool
It is impossible to answer this question without detailed information about your website, your competitive niche, your abilities to produce content compared to your competitors and the resources that you have to put into your project.

RE: EBook
I have an eBook that is rather high quality.... would really appreciate any tips on how best to utilise it to get the maximum SEO results for a small and rather new site ....
When you say... "rather high quality"... do you mean... better than all other content on this subject that exists on the web?
If I had that I would build it into a website and promote it. Will probably get lots of links and make you famous.
-
RE: Non essential and essential on page optimisation?
The best thing to do is read the SEOmoz Beginner's Guide to SEO.
It is a great resource and presents the information that you need much better than you will get in a Q&A.

RE: What to do with content that performs well in SERPs, but is dynamically generated?
I agree with Ryan. Exactly where is the content coming from and what type of content is it? Also, what is the history of this site. Has it been running with this content for years or put up a couple months ago and then hit recently.
For years Google has been dropping the rankings of some websites and they continue to do that today. Google continues to do this but over the past several months people are blaming every dropped site on Panda.

RE: Linking out?
Can you link out to an authoritative site that has a positive review about your product?
Yes, Then you can feature that link as a "testimonial" or "endorsement" - if that applies.
I am very careful linking out and when possible always try to link to sites that are much better known than my own. This builds credibility with your visitors and is an improvement to your content rather than linking down to a lesser known site.
For your formatting problem.... did you try adding a couple of break tags between paragraphs?
-
RE: How do you properly handle syndicated content?
I can't imagine myself running that many sites with the same content. My approach would be to make one big asskicking site that would beat all of the competitors in the various markets.
But if you are going to have multiple copies out there... I would write the Bible about a topic and place it on my main site.... and the other sites would have summary articles that promote the Bible that can be found on the main site. I would use rel="canonical" on the small sites as described by Ryan.

RE: How do you properly handle syndicated content?
How many websites are we talking about?

RE: Link Building
Only one works for me and that is producing good content. I spend 100% of my time on that and 0% on linkbuilding. Every minute that you spend on content creation is spent creating a traffic-pulling asset.
I could spend time begging people to link to my content... but if you have good content people will like, tweet, share, digg, stumble.. .and that generates traffic and with that traffic a few links. So just make more content and make it very easy for people to share. The key is to make content that people want to share.

RE: Link Building
If you have an established site with good linkpower these sites will add such a miniscule amount of boost that they probably are not worth your time.
If you have a brand new site that has close to zero power then the miniscule contribution from these sites might give a tiny amount of help.
If you are in the second situation above there is something else to consider... if you want to have a serious website that ranks well and pulls in nice traffic at some point you must figure out how to pull in some genuine links and on that basis it is probably better to get straight to that work than spend valuable time chasing directory links.
The only exception to the above are the few directories that are associated with successful websites (that are not directories) but that simply have a page of links for a topic like... places to play golf in Upstate New York.

RE: How? Title in Google differs than actual title tag
Search for "dresses" and check title tags for JCP and cache.com (both on page 2).
-
RE: How? Title in Google differs than actual title tag
I believe that Google is matching the query.
-
RE: How? Title in Google differs than actual title tag
Google is changing lots of title tags these days - to titles that they feel will better please the searcher.
For example... go to google.com and search for "lamps"..... check what is displayed for JC Penny... then go into the site and see their actual title tag is entirely different.

RE: Keyword Self- Cannibalization
I believe that if you have a page targeting a single keyword "sarees" and you link out to many other pages that have information about specific types of sarees that you have a strong presentation.
I don't think that it would be smart to have a page about sarees and be afraid to link to other pages using that word.

RE: Tuesday July 12th = We suddenly lost all our top Google rankings. Traffic cut in half. Ideas?
Hold your fire. Your traffic might come back tomorrow.
However, it looks like you are on the edge of whatever Google does not like because you are flashing in and out.
Hang in there, keep working to improve and iron out any problems that you think might be causing this.
-
RE: Tuesday July 12th = We suddenly lost all our top Google rankings. Traffic cut in half. Ideas?
One thing that I would do is implement the rel="author" attribute in a link to your author pages if you have not already done that.

RE: How does SEOmoz help in increasing my page rank on google?
lol
SEOMoz has nothing to do with your pagerank. You must do all of the work to earn pagerank.
However, SEOmoz can make you a smarter webmaster so that you can get more out of the time that you spend.
But, all of the work still must be done by you.

RE: Why do some websites that have hardly any backlinks, poorly optimised get placed above sites that are doing all they can with SEO?
ExactMatch.com keyword domains tend to rank a little higher than optimization and backlinks warrant.
However, watch Matt Cutts in this video....
-
RE: What is more important, tweets/shares or traditional link building?
I operate on the assumption that the tweets will have zero value for rankings. They are simply a way to spread the word about content and hopefully that word will spread to other social media channels.... then if the content is strong enough to earn links I will see ranking value. I consider social media as a way to attract links without syndicating my content.

RE: Switching to a domain name with keywords in it, is it possible to make this happen smoothly?
Ryan, I think that you are giving great advice and are the most generous SEO contributor that I have seen.
Let us know when you are taking new clients.
-
RE: Switching to a domain name with keywords in it, is it possible to make this happen smoothly?
Storwell, If I was you I would hire Ryan for just a few hours. Spend a phone call talking about your business and your goals so that he understands them. Then let him spend an hour or two studying your site and your competitive position with a goal of making a plan for the onpage optimization of your site and some ideas for promoting. Then spend an hour on the phone to discuss the plan and his recommendations.
He is one of the most active people at SEOMoz Q&A and gives tons of competent and generous advice. I would not hesitate to have him work on one of my sites - and I am a very picky person when it comes to my sites.
I don't know if he does this type of work or if you are interested... but looks like an opportunity for you to get a carefully considered plan.
-
RE: Switching to a domain name with keywords in it, is it possible to make this happen smoothly?
They are competing against your interior page with their homepage. They are better optimized than you are. Use your homepage as a weapon.
Your title tags are loaded with address information when keywords or value propositions could be used (your address is still visible in SERPs so you still have that if removed from title tag).
Your server is soooooooo slooooooooooow.... really bad.

RE: Redesign of an ecommerce site
We are thinking to redesign our ecommerce site and was wondering would we loose our google rankings in any way? That's something we don't want.
I think that you need a different attitude. When you redesign a website you should use that as an opportunity to IMPROVE your SEO. You should be studying or hiring a consultant to identify changes that you KNOW will make your site better.
Don't go into this with fear. Go in with knowledge and careful planning.
-
RE: What is more important, tweets/shares or traditional link building?
The links.... but you gotta get the retweets first.
-
RE: Google Penalty for strong industry link?
Nobody can say for sure... but if I look at the anchor text of the links for sites that are powerful but do zero linkbuilding they have almost no matching anchor text and a ton of links with domain.com as anchor.
I am not disputing the value of keyword anchor text... but just saying that domain.com anchor text might be better than you think with the words in nearby sentences delivering the goods. .
-
RE: What is more important, tweets/shares or traditional link building?
It depends what you are tweeting about.
If you are tweeting about garbage content (or even content that is a little better than average) then the benefit will disappear when the tweets roll deep into twitter.
However, if you are tweeting about awesome content then everybody will retweet, and those will retweet and lots of the people who see those tweets will link to your content from their blog submit it to digg and reddit.... it will be like throwing gasoline onto a fire.
The tweets will still roll deep into twitter but the glow over the web will be lasting.

RE: Links per Site vs. Domain Authority
If I post to the same site/forum with followed links each week, would my domain authority reap a domain authority increase benefit?
I think that it would make you a spammer.
Why? A site that allows anyone to visit every week to post links has no authority.

RE: SEO Certification + SEO Experience = Ideal SEO Consultant ???
Place your money on "track record" - preferably in your topic niche.
-
RE: Switching to a domain name with keywords in it, is it possible to make this happen smoothly?
I would not redirect this site until it has been properly optimized and its current potential identified. It would be like buying new hardware because your code is bloated.
-
RE: Switching to a domain name with keywords in it, is it possible to make this happen smoothly?
Just saying what I would do if I was in your situation....
I think that you have a fantastic domain. Nice. I would not change it.
You have been working on this for a year and not getting results.
In my opinion, your on-page optimization is not very good. Like everyone you could also use some better links.
I think that it is time to get a professional SEO to do a "study and recommend" for you. They would discuss your visibility goals, study your site, do a little research and then spend an hour on the phone with you giving you a "to do list" and talking you through how to implement it.
Your business is worth this small investment. It will benefit you for a long time.
This is not something that can be done in the five to ten minutes that is normally spent in a Q&A. I think that you have a nice business that deserves something a lot more than quick advice.
If I was you I would find an SEO who gives great advice here for free, read that person's profile to see if they do work for hire and ask if they can help. I am not recommending myself because I don't do work for hire - just trying to give you the best advice that will get your site effective as quickly as possible. Every day that you go without better rankings is lost income. Find someone who can get you flying as soon as possible.
Just my two cents.

RE: Using Transcriptions
I don't think that you will have any problem with penalties. I think that this is strictly upside.
-
RE: Any ideas for capturing keywords that your client rejects because they aren't politically correct?
Just my opinion... I have been to a lot of nursing homes.... I go there a two or three times every week to visit. From what I have seen I don't think that the public is extremely touchy about this term.
But, your client has a specific business image that they are trying to maintain... and it seems that this word is on their agenda.
I would show them search volumes and see what they say.
-
RE: Any ideas for capturing keywords that your client rejects because they aren't politically correct?
I like your idea for an article about the term "nursing home". I'd write a couple of those articles and feature links to them on every page of the site.
If I was selling something and everybody everywhere was asking for it by an overwhelmingly popular name I think that I would adapt to it. Visitors to the site would know that they are in the right place. Using some fancyass name would have visitors wondering if you really offer the service that they need... or if they know you offer those services they might wonder if your prices are too high.

RE: PPC Campaign Setup Fee - Fair?
Some business areas can easily spend well over $2-3k for just one keyword. Some can not reach that over all of the profitably relevant keywords combined. There can be an enormous difference in effort between those situations - both in setting them up and monitoring progress. Then a person can get into the details of landing page optimization and A/B testing. Enormous amounts of work can go into that.
So, the bottom line depends upon the difficulty/diversity of your keyword suite and the amount of time that your agency will dedicate to making you money and optimizing.
If I had this situation, I would start experimenting myself (or have a smart employee do it) with PPC and that includes both optimizing the ads and optimizing the landing pages (if you are not doing both you are blowing an awful lot of money). Then when I knew a little I would attend the two day Adwords seminar of Brad Geddes and run the campaigns myself.
My personal opinion is that a person with inside knowledge of a business, its products and its economics has an enormous advantage over an SEO once he becomes competent with the PPC process and most importantly understands Google's quality score.

RE: What to do with domain?
Identify pages on the purchased domain that have decent traffic or links. Then redirect to same-topic pages on the old domain with quality content that can receive redirects. Create new pages if existing pages are not present.

RE: Mozcon Questions
If you look at the speakers and topics list you will see that the agenda is very impressive. Looks like it will be time very well spent.
-
RE: Mozcon Questions
I'm a total newbie to SEOmoz and am totally addicted.
That says it all. I am confident that you will get a lot out of it and will arrive back home with an enormous list of improvements to make.
The people who need to worry about getting their money's worth out of a conference are the people who are not addicted. They think they can go there, sip coffee and fart, then go back home as an SEO expert.
-
RE: Re-optimizing onsite SEO, can it hurt?
Rework all of them. One at a time. Be sure that you are making major improvement. Improve the content while you have that page open. Toss them back up and watch what happens to a few of them before doing all of them.
-
RE: Using Transcriptions
My answer to the question was based upon you already having the article and the transcript. However, the ideal thing would be to have the transcript and have an EXTRAS area with some additional details on fine points on the topic of the video and some links to related topics that were covered in the video.
-
RE: Using Transcriptions
Do you have any thoughts on which of the above methods would be best?
All I can do is say how I would handle this. I would post the full transcript on the same page as the video and the article.
I like having a transcript because I sometimes don't understand the speaker in the video. Sometimes I want to read the words slowly and carefully. And, sometimes I am writing about the video and want to include an exact quote of fair use length.
I would not hide the transcript with java. Instead, below the video I would have an anchor text link to the transcript that shoots the visitor down the page to the top of the transcript.
I think that a big page with 500 word article, video and 500 word transcript will be impressive and substantive.

RE: How do you track links over time?
how do you track your links over time?
About once every six months I go into webmaster tools and see what links have magically appeared.
-
RE: Too many footer links?
Wow! Those are really tiny links! And the font is messy on my monitor. I agree that you need to do something.
What are the goal of these links?
If they are there because you think people need them then run CrazyEgg and you will probably discover that nobody is clicking them.
If they are there for SEO reasons then maybe you need to think about a navigation structure that will accomplish your goals and place them in a more prominent location.
If they are there for both SEO and people then for sure make them more prominent.
This could be a problem of how to make an SEO strategy incorporate nicely into a design.

RE: Trust Symbols
Lots of people believe that adding a trust symbol to your checkout pages or even to your sales pages can lift your conversion rates.
Even the placement of the trust symbol can have an impact on conversions as shown by this study on the SiteTuners website...http://sitetuners.com/case-studies/luggagepoint.html
FYI... Tim Ash, author of "Landing Page Optimization" is Site Tuners co-founder. Lots more case studies on their website.
-
RE: How do blogs affect seo?
Autogenerated or inserted by hand makes no difference.
I get LOTS of traffic because I cover some events and some people search for them with a date.
To be certain that Google can read your dates or any other text information, view your page in google's cache.
-
RE: New website with slightly new urls
Do not change URLs unless you have an extremely good reason and fully understand how to minimize losses of rankings, traffic, linkvalue, anchor text value, bookmarks, tweets, likes, and more.
Lots of people have lost years of link equity and a fortune of money by changing their URLs.
-
RE: Portion of online sales from different channels
There is not any meaningful number for you to examine.
You will be abnormal no matter what you do.
