The only time I would expect that is if a marketer is using the Google URL builder and put "Scrabble dictionary" as the keyword.

ALL THE WAY! You want to be crawled from the top down.

RE: Yahoo directory inclusion
Just make sure you have a nice site that's updated. If you are talking about www.shiftins.com, then it looks okay to me. Make sure there are no 404s or anything like that.
BTW, I think BBB is better than Yahoo Directory since BBB gives more credibility. Get both if you can afford it.

RE: Google Analytics Search Engine Optimisation Report
I always ignore GWT info from GA. I think it's pretty weak. I only use GWT to check the health and other things directly related to the site, not rankings. GWT is all over the place. Even Rand mentioned this long ago at MozCon.
If you are looking for real search engine custom reports, go to Avinash's website kaushik.net. He is VERY well know in the GA world. I'm a graduate of his program.

RE: Is this Negative SEO?
I wouldn't worry about those videos. Just hire some 18 year-old skater to shoot a real video and bump these guys off the SERPS. I don't see anything negative about the videos. They are just boring. All I see is some dork recording his steering wheel racing a 4-cyclider Civic thinking it's fast. Don't loose sleep over this.
My 2 cents:
POV = Privately Owned Vehicle. Change the acronym in the logo so we aren't guessing watch POV means.
You'll get a high bounce rate from Android users like me!

RE: Anyone Still Use Article Directories?
if you are talking about article spinning, it can still work. In fact, I have a friend who did it and rankings haven't gone down in 10 months. But the website I am talking about is an authority website and has been around for many years with a good link profile.
If your site is new, I would forget about it and use the money to buy credibility with a company like the BBB.

RE: Penguin update... is this a good idea?
I don't think a 301 would help out your situation. If I were in your situation, I would go through GWT and contact all the shady sites to remove the links. Also, I would build kick ass content ASAP to offset grey hat marketing. If you need to buy some authority, get a membership at BBB.org and your local chamber of commerce. Real companies have these memberships anyway, spammer don't.

RE: Site Redesign: Potential Problems?
Read this: http://searchengineland.com/interview-google-search-quality-rater-108702
It what Google Quality raters look for in websites. I don't think it'll have an effect all all. You're not changing the URLS or the content. You're just changing the NAV and the look and feel. Build to convert more visitors. Have money prepared for an Adwords campaign in case your rankings go down.

RE: Please give me some ideas on my link building campaign
I agree here with Sanket, I don't think Health is totally unrelated. Perhaps heakth is too broad, but maybe health insurance or healthy life.
Take a look at your Google Analytics and see what people are typing in to find your site. That may give you a place to start. Also use Google Insights. Look at the bottom of this page: http://www.google.com/insights/search/#q=pharmacy%20schools&cmpt=q Under "search Terms" IMHO these are related keywords.

RE: Keyword search in Google Adwords
Focus on what's best for your customer. Make your title tags readable and don't keyword stuff because that will confuse people when they read your titles.
I use exact match but I try to combine it with other exact match to create something readable or optimize for two keywords at once.
[car shipping] + [instant auto quote] = Car Shipping | Get an Instant Auto Quote for any 2 zip codes.
Try something like that.

RE: Duplicate Page Title
Check GWT. You may have to 301 redirect the index to the /. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. Check the SERP and see which one you are already ranking for. If / is in the SERP, then Google has already chosen which one to display. Also check GWT under Duplicate Titles.

RE: Angies List and Judy's Book and other sites
I use the BBB as a source of credibility. I have used Yahoo Directory, but I made zero sales. It helps if your site is new because it's a follow link. The BBB has made 1 sale for me so it paid for itself for the year.
I wouldn't waste any time for SEO purposes on Angie's List if it's behind a login. But I would look at it as a source of revenue. It's just like craigslist. I don't post on Craigslist for SEO purposes, I post on there to get business. Forget SEO rankings; it's about money in the bank.

RE: Is a 301 to a 301 ok?
I heard Matt Cutts say the same thing.
Remember that when doing 301s, not all the link juice is passed. Matt Cutts also says that.

RE: How to make FB comments crawlable by Google? <noscript>?</noscript>
I use Facebook Comments on almost every webpage on my site. Yes it's an iFrame, but I stick my URL in the Facebook Comments so it counts as a link and people are "talking" about me.
Here's my proof. Run OSE on my contact page: http://www.shipoverseas.com/us/contact-us.html I have 57 FB Shares and 0 Likes (because I don't have a Like button on that page).
Then run OSE on my home page: 68 Shares 167 Likes.
Google knows that people are "talking" about me on my contact page. But in reality it's me slapping my URL into the reply.
My point is "if" you are trying to turn FB comments into HTML with noscript to rank higher (because that's what you're really trying to do), you don't need to do it. Write kickass content and more people will leave Facebook Comments and keep slapping your URLs in there.
I think I should write a YouMoz Post about this.

RE: Does Website Design Matter?
This is a great question. I think maybe you should start ramping up your content so that once your site is ready you can come blasting out with some great content. What I am saying is keep your blog posts as drafts and then launch once the site is ready.
Personally, I wouldn't link or share a default WordPress theme.

RE: Are paid directories any good?
I don't know if you'll find any listing here specifically for NZ, but we mozzers use this list: http://www.seomoz.org/directories
I hope that helps.
BTW, as for paid directories, maybe you can get join a professional organization like a chamber of commerce (we have that here in the US).

What this video on Matt Cutts and consider your question answered. (m.example.com)

RE: Using Online Communities for link building..
If you're going to participate in a community, do it to be part of the community, not for links. I don't really post my website here on SEOMOZ, but people do contact me to give me work. Besides, most forums that I have seen have nofollow links because they don't want to get spammed.
One other thing, look at GWT for those links. You can use OSE, but it's not as good as GWT.

RE: Trading Backlinks a good idea?
I never really do link exchanges unless they are part of a blog post. Also, I don't link to sub-par websites or unrelated websites. It's okay to link to another site and they link to you. One example is I have my BBB Membership page point to my site and I point many links from my site to that single BBB Page.
Look at the site you are going to link to and ask yourself, "Can this potentially cause a problem in the future? What's the risk?" I have turned down MANY sites wanting to link exchange, but if they are willing to write a high quality guest blog post, then I'm fine with it whether I get a back link from their site or not.

RE: Advice Needed: Why Is My Site Not Ranking Despite All The White Hat I Have Done?
Whoa, there are way too many images above the content. This image should be a table http://www.drycleaning.com.sg/images/Laundry-Dry-Cleaning-Rates.jpg. If I remember correctly, Google looks at the l x w of images of ads and
s and may think there is not enough content above the fold. Your content is way too far down the page.
Just a question, why Copyright 2004-2014 in the footer and not Copyright 2004-2013?
-
RE: How to SEO a website that is being help back by duplicate content?
I'm a little confused about what you are trying to accomplish, but I'll give it a shot.
If you have a website that you want to ONLY rank in Spain, go to GWT > sit configuration > settings > Geographic target > Spain. "IF" you do this, nothing on this site will show anywhere else except in http://www.google.es/. "IF" you are trying to sell property in Spain to an American, then don't do this because you're listings will never come out in Google.com.
If you are having a duplicate content problem, then rel=canonical it using a plugin in your CMS. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/rel-canonical-html-head/

RE: Beyond Guest Blogging, What Else Works Now?
We don't know exact what Google does to rank websites. I think it's a good thing doesn't let us know the algorithm.
I think link building through guest blog posting should only be one thing you should do. How about leaving testimonials on other websites? I have used that successfully especialy with companies that use our service.
-
RE: Advice Needed: Why Is My Site Not Ranking Despite All The White Hat I Have Done?
I wouldn't worry about being scraped. My sites get scraped. SEOmoz gets scraped all the time. I your case, I would do two things. 1) Build the table and immediately resubmit that page in GWT. 2) Insert a row at the bottom of the table and put anchor text so if anyone does scrape your site, they point a link back to you. Or another approach is to insert a top row in the table and make an image saying something generic like "Singapore Dry Cleaning Services". Have the image on "your" server and/or make it link to your home page with the alt tags like alt="Singapore Dry Cleaning".
-
RE: Will changing the title tags cause me to lose rankings?
I really don't worry about it that much. I recommend to just do what is best for your customer and focus on conversions.
I literally copied and pasted from the SERP one of my pages. This is for the KW phrase "Ship car to Germany".
Shipping Car to Germany from USA - Save money shipping autos to ...
<cite>www.shipoverseas.com/us/ship-car/.../shipping-car-to-germany.html</cite>Shipping car to Germany from USA. Departure & Arrival Ports, Documents, Duty Tax. We ship cars for private individuals, active US military, and tourists.Notice that the keyword "Ship" is not in the title, but the related KW "Shipping" is. If I change the title tag to "Ship Car to Germany", then my rankings may be affected a little, but that's going to depend on where the competitors rank in Google's algorithm too. Now that I look at this, I have to change my title tag and description because I have better content on my page.

RE: Beyond Guest Blogging, What Else Works Now?
SEOMOZ List - yes, but only related ones
GetListed - Yes
Squidoo - NO
-
RE: Client has been COPYING blog posts to wordpress.com for years. Now what?
I would rel canonical it too.
-
RE: Will changing the title tags cause me to lose rankings?
You're over analyzing this. If your home page is the only page that ranks, you have problems. My website has 28% of incoming visits to the home page. 71% is to the landing pages.
BUILD highly relevant landing pages and write KICK ASS content for those landing pages.
This to me looks spammy: Austin Office Space For Lease | Austin Commercial Real Estate Properties | Retail Space For Rent | Austin Tenant Advisors
Obviously you are trying to keyword stuff.
I would write something clickable like this: Office Space for Rent in Austin for Commercial & Retail. Get Rates.
-
RE: Beyond Guest Blogging, What Else Works Now?
Use those General Directories if they include your a section for your industry.
Squidoo - turned to crap because of article marketers re-spinning content. Got HAMMERED by Google. I'm not putting my clients in Squidoo.
-
RE: Are pages with lots of pictures with outbound links bad for seo?
I wouldn't use that as a good SEO link building example. This looks like a little grey hat SEO. "If" I were the webmaster of that site, I would <nofollow>all of them so Google could see I wasn't trying to manipulate rankings. I wouldn't say it's bad, but it's definitely not something I would do. Besides, there's hardly any content. There's only about 9 sentences.</nofollow>

RE: Many Blogs or One Blog?
The blog network (link juice farming) is against Google's Editorial Guidelines. You never know if you'll get caught, but many people have.
Link juice farming on product/client specific blogs, or focus on content for each course niche on main site, that is the question?!
Focus on content for each course niche on the main site.
Blogs tend to have higher bounce rates, but if that is a concern you can filter out (EXCLUDE) your blog to see what you real conversion rate is in Google Analytics. As far as conversions, it will depend on the purpose of the blog: sales, leads, newsletter signups.
I would only have one blog because you can build a lot more authority with one blog than splitting up the blog five ways.

RE: Help With Disappearing Rankings
That site doesn't deserve to rank. Come on! No content on the home page? Google can't tell what the keywords are.
Please read chapter 4. http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo
Sorry if I sound harsh, but how can the owner of that site possibly expect to rank without content?

RE: Targeting City Geo-tags/Keywords for Clients with Multiple Locations
This is a tough question because we don't know the business objectives of the company or site. If it's one company and you are trying to get local listing, why not just get a Google + page and verify all your local pages via the post card Google sends through the mail.
If all locations sell different things (car parts vs women shoes), new domain or sub-domain. But if your client is selling the same thing like Starbucks, then example.com/city.
I would personally create a page with schema.org markup for addresses and link them to /city
-
RE: Why did this website disappear from Google's SERPs?
You have to stay updated on penguin.
You have a sitewide footer link pointing to http://www.prokellseo.com/
I wouldn't risk external link in the footer even if it is an exact match domain.
There are many factors that can make a website lose rankings. We don't know what it could be with the information you provided.
Maybe you need more content on the home page, it only has 6 sentences.
Check out your GWT to see what you can uncover.

RE: It is NOW time to invest in SEO consultant, How/ Where can i find a good one???
Try to find one with eCommerce experience. If you are looking to spend $1000 one time, then you're probably going to run into trouble. The reason I say that is I have many people who call me up and ask if I can get them ranking for $x.xx. I always turn those deals down.
BUT if you are saying that your can invest $1000/mo, then you can probably find a consultant who can work with you on a small scale. At $1000/mo, that's $230/week which is very little for me, but okay for a newbie to SEO. That would pay someone $10/hr for about 23 hours of work.
I don't want to confuse you, but I want you to understand that the quality of a person who works for $10/hr is normally a lot less than someone who earns a lot more.
My recommendation... hire a SEO consultant to spec out what you need 1st, THEN hire someone.
-
RE: How to find all indexed pages in Google?
@BJS, I would export a file from GWT and filter the results. If your URLs are in GWT, then most likely it's indexed in Google.
-
RE: Target keywords on homepage or sub page?
Use my site as an example. www.shipoverseas.com
The homepage is about "international car shipping".
All the landing pages are about "shipping cars to xyz country".
When I 1st started this site, I didn't know that my home page was going to be about "international car shipping". I thought I was going to try to have it rank for "ship car to Europe", "ship car to au", "ship car to africa". Instead I made categories + landing pages.
I hope that helps you organize your site.
Tim, my marketing strategy is based off what people are looking for, not what I think is best. Look into your GA to find these clues.
-
RE: Best Approach to Get Backlinks for this site
I was going to suggest dinner where the phones aren't ringing and they don't have to answer emails.
That's what I do with my local clients. -
RE: Internal link question
I would do full URLs. If your site gets scraped, you'll get a link pointing back.
-
RE: What kind of pages are they?
This is WP links. These are probably results of a bot (maybe googlebot) going into your search bar and entering in numbers to see if there are any other pages they can discover. It's probaly nothing to worry about. I personally wouldn't worry about it
