RE: Product Pages Outranking Category Pages
There was a time when I used to face this problem on regular basis as I had lots of clients all from the eCommerce sites.
This usually happens when your internal linking strategy is not satisfactory. The idea is to reconsider your internal linking strategy and fix the problems and you will see categories will started rank for their key phrases.
Hope this helps!

RE: Should I Use the Disavow Tool to for a Spammy Site/Landing Page?
The links are not build by you... you are sure that the link of link that is pointing back from certain URL is a bad link and you have tried everything to remove those links but failed... now the only option you have left is to use a disavow tool so go for it!
It is important not to use disavow tool when you didn't tried removing the bad links manually but if you did attempt and failed then you should go with option left with you that is using a Disavow tool!

RE: Ranking factors: What am I missing here?
This is head shacking.... not only that but at my end Google is showing different URLs of the same domain from position 2 to position 6 which means the website is ranking for 5 positions for one keyword.
The Website quality from the SEO point of view sucks BIG time... In my opinion there is no way a domain can hack 5 positions on the first page of Google for one of the money making keyword....This seems to be a bug from Google! But obviously I not sure about it!

RE: Is it good to have a few outbound links to good authority sites?
I don’t really have any study available with me that proves that OBL is going to help you life your DA even a bit but if the link that is going out to authority site will help enhance user experience then you should use it without any second thought!
OBL to quality sites can allow your visitor’s to trust you and you can get positive brand image but SEO value of OBL in my opinion is questionable.

RE: Rel="canonical"
I will agree with John and in addition to that if it is possible for you to add no index to blog’s category pages it will better!

RE: What should I do on a limited budget of $2,000/mo
First of all Congrats on the new website!
I am glad that you are serious about your marketing investment as most small businesses are more focused towards conversions no matter where they are getting from... off course PPC offer quick returns but investing heavily on PPC and ignoring organic is a worst business strategy I could ever imagine.
Anyways, in my personal opinion the budget is fair enough to start a comprehensive SEO campaign that offer REAL results and greater ROI. All you need to do is to invest it smartly!
1. Invest on Local 1st
If you are a local business (even if you are not but have a physical location) try to heir someone for local SEO submissions only!
Submitting a website to local maps, yellow pages websites and business data aggregators is a onetime game so the charges won’t be too much! If you have time you can even do it yourself by reading a blogs about how to go with local SEO.
2. On-Page SEO Audit and Implementation
With Local SEO try and find a SEO consultant who is ready to audit your website from the on-page point of view and fix the problems within the website accordingly. This will be on technical as well as on the content and design side.
**Target to achieve Local and On-Page optimization for the 1st month.
3. Social Media
This is a powerful ranking factor and can really help you lift your rankings in search engines but for a start I would advise you to start with using social media by your own and do not give it to the third party!
The major reason behind this is not only to save money but social Media is a platform where you can set your brand image in the online world so try to start by yourself as you know your business best! Later you can give your consultant to handle and manage your social media entities.
4. Link building
Now your Local and On-page is perfectly fit and you are done with your first month now hire a smart link builder to start with link building and management! I believe 2k a month for quality link building is a fine budget!
Over all your work to look in to different aspect will increase but as a result you will be able to get quality SEO services within your budget. Once you see some results started to appear in the SERPs and website started to give quality conversions... this is the time to increase your SEO budget and start with advance inbound tactics to grow audience around your brand and get 1st page rankings from the desired key phrases.
Hope this helps!

RE: Canonical link vs root domain
If you are adding Canonical tag to the main website, it will tell Google that the content available on domain.com is the original content but if the links are going to point on domain.com/home then link juice will not transfer to the main Domain.
If I would be at your place I would have tried using 301 redirection from domain.com/home to domain.com as this way all of my content will be appearing on the main domain and if my links are pointing to domain.com/home the juice will automatically transfer to the home page as the redirection is 301.

RE: Should I contact webmasters to remove URL's to my site from domains with a low DA?
Mike, your question is not clear!
Are you trying to ask whom you should contact if you want to remove incoming links from Lower DA?
If this is the question, then I would really answer this in two steps!
Step 1:
Why do you want to remove links from lower DA? If you think that lower DA means lower quality then this concept is highly inappropriate! A website with Higher DA can be a lower quality websites if you really want to remove low quality websites from your link profile then you should audit the website who is linking to you to see if it really a low quality website.
You can check the design, UI, UX, Link profile, onpage SEO, search their brand name in Google to see if they are ranking 1st for their brand name and similar tactics...
Step 2:
If you really think that the website is low quality so in that case you have to find the contact email of the website and email them to request a link removal.
**I am hoping that this is something you are trying to ask if there is something else please explain the question in detail and I would be happy to answer you!

RE: Why is this page not ranking?
The keywords you are trying to target are a bit competitive and you don’t have enough authority to get this page ranked in search engines. The idea is to get some high quality domains inlinking to this so that this page can rank for the desired keywords!

RE: Traffic drop 98% in two days
I really don’t think that the problem is with indexation as when i search for post title i still can see the post appearing in the search results...The only different thing is when I use this simple search “site:www.incredibleinfant.com” I see categories are appearing in the search results instead of the post titles... which is kind of different then usual.
I can be wrong but is there any plug-in that you was using in the older theme and actually not using in the current theme? Just wondering!
P.S: Idea by Fede also makes lot of sense to me!
-
RE: Struggling to get indexed and ranked
This is little funny as a whole...
Usually developers makes a little mistake while developing a website by adding no-index tag in the meta tag area... try and check the code on pages to see if Meta tag does not say no-index, no-follow!
If yes, just remove the tag and submit the sitemap again!
I have the same question as David, Is Bing crawling the website ATM?

RE: Trying to SEO a site that used Header Tags for Design
Chris, I have a normal practice not to start with off-page optimization when on-page is not really fixed and this is because if the on-page is not fixed you cannot taste the real power of links...
This is common that the header tags are set with CSS as many websites do this from time to time...i think what you should do is to communicate the issue with the client and tell them how important it is to fix this problem as soon as possible.
-
RE: Email, phone, address on banner
In my personal opinion it doesn’t matter if you have this information on every page on not but it has to be on the contact us page.
Talking from the user perspective if you think you are in the industry where people love to have contact information then place it on every page may be in the header or footer, Google won’t gonna have any problem within in normal cases!
-
RE: My 404 page is showing a 4xx error. How can that be fixed?
I agree you need to update your web.config file with the desired instructions!
-
RE: Linking to Media Mentions
If they are mentioning your client’s business even without a link so you are getting the benefit of citation but as far as the links and SERP visibility is concern the idea is to be creative, launch something news worthy on your client’s website and then contact all the journalists to and then ask them the link on previous articles where your client is already available.
Obviously going directly to ask for a link will be inappropriate but making something up for journalists will allow them to take interest in you and then you can easily come to the point.
-
RE: What constitutes a duplicate page?
Not sure if I understand it correctly...I think you are saying that you create a new page every night for the new schedule! I mean if this is the case then why not you just simply refresh the information on the same page as technically Google will love it and duplication issue will be reduced to none.
-
RE: Where To Add New Content In Site URL?
Agree with Thomason about sub domain and why you shouldn’t add content on the sub domain! As far as your question is concern that talks about where to add this content is actually your choice but if you have videos related to products that you are selling on your eCommerce store then try adding the videos in the product detail page and this will result in increasing the overall conversion rate.
Hope this helps!

RE: My Boss tells me personal narrative content isn't read online and bad for SEO, anyone else disagree? b/c I do!
From personal Narration if you mean a story about something that happened to you and how you feel about it. Then in that case i am with you... The world is moving towards personalization... even in the SEO world people love to hear personal experiments, tests instead f theory articles!
Technically speaking content that have a touch of personalization tend to go more viral as compare to the one that only talks about boring theory...
I think if you boss want straight 500 words of article and a link at the end to get SEO benefits.... so the time is over for that... today if you are not creating valuable and engaging content you are almost wasting your time as far as SEO is concern!
Hope this helps!
-
RE: Updating existing content - good or bad?
In all the 3 cases mentioned in the post, this seems like it is a good idea not to create new posts/pages and update the existing one. Obviously if the article is poorly written so in that case one should update the page after fixing the content of it instead of creating new pages... same is the case for the other 2 scenarios.
I think this video by SEOmoz contains your answer >> http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-interview-googles-matt-cutts-on-redirects-trust-more

RE: How come a site with low PR and DA is first on everything?
I think there are two ways of looking in to thinks...
One is what Fedrico discussed in detail that the websites who do spamming usually get tons and tons of link from low quality websites so their PR and DA is low and as they somehow manipulated Google they will not stay in ranking for longer period of time... so may be when you are looking at the websites it’s their lucky time...
There is another way you can think about this... he must have a powerful and strong on-page optimization that Google likes it and rank it against the targeted key phrases. In most cases, if you have your on page SEO properly optimized you can win your competitor even with less links...

RE: Specific Domain Migration Question
If you have a choice to stick up to the current version and carry on with the things then it is fine but if this is not a choice then move towards redirecting 301 to all the pages to new URL structure is something you should be doing.
Obviously this affect your traffic and SERP rankings for certain keywords but along with the migration if you also working on the quick marketing campaign (as you are taking over some other website) which may includes Press Release, Blog posts about it, mailer to all your subscribers and social media.... this will help people coming and visiting your website from multiple places and this will help you retain your SERP rankings and traffic quicker than normal.
-
RE: Internal links
There is no way you should use no follow tag for your internal links... as Branagan said no follow tag should only be used when you are linking to the site you don’t trust.
Obviously you trust your own website and this is the major reason why you should do follow all link that are pointing back to your own website (to some other pages).
Hope this helps!

RE: Two websites in different niches. Should I create separate G+ authorship profiles?
I had a client who has the same problem and I advised him the same what i am advising you... Think about the real life and see if a person can talk and talk about two completely different niches and the answer will probably be yes!
I am writing on my SEO blog as it’s my profession and at the same time I have a blog where I write short stories which is kind of my hobby! It is actually good to go with both website with the same author tag as I am actually the person behind it!
Similar is your case, If you are the real face behind the two website from completely different niches then you should go for the same anchor text.
-
RE: Directory sites in 2013
I would mostly going to agree with David’s answer.. you should have to have your quality matrix before you are going for any link no matter if it is Guest Blogging, Press Release or any other form of link.
In this case I would usually look in to the reputation of the website (directory or PR website), indexed pages of the website, relevancy of the niche, good DA.
As far as “Not Free at all” is concern it can be true in many cases but still I will not make it a part of my matrix and will also consider some great websites that offer link for FREE!

RE: Google's Exact Match Algorithm Reduced Our Traffic!
Now this seems like a funny deal by Google...or maybe I am missing something but .com have a better link profile then .co.uk and as far as the anchor text on links is concern yes it is keyword orientated but the reason why Google cannot penalize this is because it’s their domain name as well so it will also consider this as their brand name...
The only thing that I think why.co.uk domain have a higher authority is because they are using content on the home page where as you have your website page with images only... not sure if it is going to help or not but try to add some content on the home page to see if you get any improvement in terms of ranking and traffic.
Just my 2 cents!

RE: What are your top tactics for boosting your site's Author Rank?
I think worth domain thing that most people are already doing in the ethical SEO sphere is to write for other quality SEO blogs with the author tag.
-
RE: Local SEO, how much additional information to fill out beyond NAP
Interesting question... If i would be at your place i would have added extra more information about the band the idea behind it is simple like vzPRO said, this submission, you are not going this for search engines only... but you are doing this for REAL people who are going to take a look of it.
I would defiantly say not to add tons and tons of paragraphs of information but at least add the information that is appealing to your targeted audience and help them convert. Images, Video, Payment information, parking info are the things that are usually helpful for people looking for small businesses like restaurants, bars and similar.

RE: Does posting on blogs with anchored backlinks do you any good?
against you simply means that too many links from the blog comment give hint to Google that you are building low quality links which might take you to the area where Google penguin take websites in consideration ... and you know the rest!

RE: How to make up for the low WOT score caused by spam in the past?
The process of building a reputation is always slow but somehow you have to live with it to move forward.
-
RE: SEOMoz directory list - some clarity needed FROM SEOMOZ STAFF
Yes, Google have turned down the link value of links coming from most of the directories but saying that the link value of directories is finished is untrue! There are many directories which contain a link value and paying for them is a worth investment (in terms of link juice and business conversions.)
Yahoo directory and others are few of finest example of it as people still find them reputable and pass businesses to the businesses listed here!
-
RE: How to make up for the low WOT score caused by spam in the past?
I think in the world of day, increasing this WOT score is pretty much easy and all you need to do is to re brand your company ethically and contribute in the community generously...
Try to write quality articles on your company blog, use Google Authorship tag for your authors, offer freebies, join and create discussions, create link baits, attend conferences and more...
The idea is to come to the front and do everything that a REAL ethical man (company) should do and you will see slowly and gradually your WOT score will improve with your connections and communications in the virtual world.
Hope this helps!
-
RE: Does posting on blogs with anchored backlinks do you any good?
I think you are talking about adding a comment with a keyword in the name section and your desired page in the URL section...
As far as Google is concern, according to the latest information Google does crawl comments so it is good to add relevant and valuable comments and 1 out of 10 comment can be anchored but do not over do it or else you will find this technique will started to work against you!
-
RE: Used Machines Site - Should I delete sold machines pages?
Create a page that says the machine is sold and here is the list of similar machines... when a machine is sold you can delete the page and redirect 301 to the new page that you have created!
The reason why you should do this is because this will help you make lesser pages and do more work and you will stay away from duplicate content as well.
-
RE: How to fix algo penalty
At step one you need to figure out what penalty it is because there are different penalties updating from time to time that includes Panda, penguin and others..
In case you are confirmed that the penalty is the automatic penalty for over optimization then in that case you need to fix your on-page Optimization as well as off-page Optimization... because it is not only because of the over optimized anchor text on links that are pointing to the website but this also can be a internal linking, quality of content, and other technical problems.
I would highly recommend you to do a complete website audit in terms of on-page as well as off-page so that you have a clear idea of where you should focus in order to get back to search engine SERPs.
-
RE: Free PR Sites
Same post on multiple PR sites is duplicate content so you can imagine what will be the value of a link. In the world of digital marketing after Panda and Penguin I don’t find this as an ideal practice to follow.
I believe on using few but powerful PR sites like RP News, News wire and others but if you are using multiple FREE PR websites then in that case try to submit unique press releases instead of the same content on every website.
Hope this helps!
-
RE: Easy Local SEO NAP Question
Have played around a bit with this feature and in my experience Google and Yahoo and most reputable local websites consider this as same... infect if you try adding different format they will convert it in to the one format that they accept.
There are (may be) some websites that do not care of it and find different numbers as separate but most local websites that contain value in terms of conversions and rankings in the local world can sense this and find this as 1 telephone number.
-
RE: Does it help to have more than one backlink from the same website?
If the website is great then there is no problem!
You get 2 backlinks from CNN, now if you have a choice to get one more... will you reject it?
Other than the fact that link helps in getting better rankings... links also drive referral traffic to your website which can also convert in to leads and sales....so if the website is good and can drive traffic... then I would say go for it!
-
RE: 301ing 404's
This really depends...
If there is a traffic coming on the 404 pages and have a good link value in that case I would highly recommend redirecting 404 page to similar pages or home page but if the link value is not up to the mark then in that case I would recommend to create a sexy 404 page and let ht people land their and then manually move to any other part of the website...
A sexy 404 page will allow you to cater some natural links which might help you in the longer run!
-
RE: Dofollow vs nofollow for place listings?
I don’t think there will be a problem in leaving them as it is at the moment... the reason is because they are pointing back to the entities that are quite famous like facebook page, home page and more...
Make it no follow will indicate Google that the other websites are not quality and this is why you do not want Google to pass link juice...
-
RE: SEO Migration / Transition from Current Platform. Have Experience?
Paul, this is something I have experienced a lot... there are many blogs who claims that good planning on platform migration can help you stay away from the loss of search engine traffic as well as rankings but I think migration is going to give a temporary effect on rankings and traffic and bad planning can make it preeminent.
Here are the following things you should keep in mind before you are starting to migrate a platform from one ecommerce platform to another.
- Make sure that the next ecommerce should have all the necessary SEO plug-ins installed that you will need to make your website look good to search engines as well as users.
- Make sure to do a proper 301 redirection on pages and on category and product level. Any mistakes will results as a ranking loss from the search engines.
- Try to keep the URLs same as possible so that redirect should not be needed
Try to update xml site map and webmaster tool about the change so that Google can track and re crawl the pages accordingly.
Let me assure you again that this might produce a negative impact on rankings and traffic for a short period of time but as soon as the pages started to crawl it will get fixed accordingly.
Hope this helps!

RE: Staff Dumbfounded by Rankings Drop - Please Help Us Understand!
Hello David,
Your Analytics shows a dip after 22nd of August 2012 and this is the same date when Google Panda version 9.3.1 got updated so I have no problem saying that this is the cause of traffic down.
Google said that this update should affect only 1% of the total searches and you much come under that 1% of the search quires.
Panda usually affected the websites that contain low quality content as well as links. After looking in to your website following are the major things that can be a problem.
- Your website is in asp and this is the most painful platform when it comes to SEO (have previously worked with ASP) so my advice would be to rethink about your URL structure and see if you can make search engine friendly URLs.
- Your website contains links from many irrelevant website (irrelevant to your business nature). The idea is to increase quality links to the website by performing some content marketing and link baiting activities
Once you perform these ethical online marketing activities and see some natural links coming your way this is the time when you should send a reconsideration request to Google.
Hope this helps!

RE: Beyond Guest Blogging, What Else Works Now?
Guest Blogging is a good idea but I guess there are other tactics for link building that you can use... which includes link sleuthing and grabbing links through images....
Inm y opinion directories still ahve a bit of a mileage but if you are tight with budget i would prefer spend more on organic and natural links instad of directories....
-
RE: Moving from www.domain.net to domain.com?
301 redirection from old to anew domain will lose some of its juice so this will affect your rankings in search engine which will have a direct impact on your traffic. 301 redirection is the right choice but tray to plan a link and social strategy that you can implement right after the redirections and this will control the juice loss.
Dropping www is your choice, but keep that in mind that do not run two versions of the URL so decide first which version of the website you will be using and then redirect 301 all the other versions of URL to the preferred one.
-
RE: Perhaps the SEOMoz beginner's guide should be updated?
I believe that SEOmoz beginners guide is one of the best places to start especially if you are interested in SEO as a career but if there is anything that is outdated (as you have mentioned) i guess this is less a problem from SEOmoz and more the problem from Google who continue to change its algorithm from time to time.
Obviously changing/updating the guide book regularly will not be ideal but I think if SEOmoz can add when it got updated last time so people can easily understand the reason of the outdated stuff available on within the guide.
Just my 2 cents!

RE: Any Other PAID Keyword Difficulty Tool?
I am not sure how you are finding in unreliable... as far as the information and results are concern I find it very accurate but yes sometimes it goes down due to over usage of the pro users but i guess in that case you should contact to SEOmoz customer service team.
Anyways.. Here are some other keyword difficulty tools available on the internet.

RE: Artist Bios on Multiple Pages: Duplicate Content or not?
If the artist bio is not the major content on the page and there is other content available which is unique so there are less chances that Google will take this in to play but you never know Google... so it’s better to play safe.
Now if you want to play safe you have two choices, either to have a dedicated page for each artist and on that painting’s page just put the clickable image of the article that will take people to the artist’s bio page (not really helpful from conversion point of view)
The other idea is to use the iframe to show the content on each page and this way Google will count that a different page.
