I would suggest you to try RankWatch as they are more accurate and good at tracking locals!

RE: Should we consider redirecting a high ranking subdomain page to our homepage?
Ok, this is tricky one Brad!
There are situations that you should consider before you go ahead and start doing this, but before everything just go to your Google Analytics and see how much search traffic you are receiving to your design studio page and what keywords are they using to search your page.
If good %age of people who are landing from search are using your brand name then I think you can go with it but if they are using specific design studio related keywords, this action can really hurt their user experience.
In my opinion you can also test this idea by adding 302 redirect for few days instead of 301. If things works well for you then you can always change from 301 to 302 but if you see bounce rate is increasing or something you can always change by removing 302 and then the new page you have created, 301 it to the design studio page.
It’s difficult to say how people will react to it but testing the stuff (while being on the safe side) is a good idea.

RE: Does changing host server between countries affect SEO if there is no content change?
Only few things to keep in mind!
I always believe that location of the server have an impact on rankings... so if you are changing your server from US to Asia... I guess there will be a problem and you might see a fall in rankings (at least fluctuations).
Other thing that you should keep in mind is the down time. I would suggest checking the down time of the server and if it is more than usual the migration can be really risky!
If you are switching from one server to another within the same hosting company, this is an easy pick! All you have to do is to properly go with the migration process with minimum down time and I am sure things will be easy with you.
Hope this helps!

RE: Request: Feedback on new free tool that provides social analytics for recent blog posts
Adam, you asked for a feedback so I will try to be as honest as possible so that things that are missing can be added and over all it should be improved.
I would love to call it a blog tracking tool.. the only idea that immediately comes in my mind is to look in to the competitor and see what they are up to and what audience reaction they are getting against different post in the past few weeks and months... this can help one write what is significantly hot these days... but what about the following updates?
- You give the stats of facebook share, like, tweet, SU, reddit... which you can easily and quality find from other services like sharedcount.com. Dont you think it will be great if you can come up with a formula or something that calculate the total social power of a blog post...
- If you go a little deep in to the post and pick up keywords from it... you will be able to feature the top 5 powerful keywords that the blog you are looking for is targeting...this will be a feature that most people will like.
- How about getting a data from Majestic free API and feature the top 5 links they recently get against their posts. (This is a rough idea but it can be fine tuned to make it beneficial for targeted audience and off-course for you!)
If you can include more features to it... this really can get a pickup by people in the industry! I honestly don’t see any paid value for it but as a free tool this can go good!

RE: Off page SEO
I see you have planned to slowly poison your website in the longer run as many of the tactics are very low quality or give no positive value to the website.
If I will be at your place this will be the following plan I would have preferred. (Plan always get changed from industry to industry but I am considering this as a general plan)
- Research and gather the list of all the important and high quality directories that are relevant in your niche and get links for all (it won’t be more than 50 ~ 60).
- Find the blogs in your industry allow me to write a guest post on their blogs, shortlist the one that contain more social, traffic and DA and will target them for guest posting. 4 to 5 a month will be fine.
- 6 to 8 Posts on your own website blog (no micro sites) is great, keep the promotion plan on... writing a blog is not enough.
- 1 Slide share << go for it... no harm in it but remember it should have to have a value or else it’s like dumping your time in to waste bin.
- Manual Outreaching fir links.. This can be like link sleuthing, promoting any viral stuff that is available on your website or may be following the competitor’s links wisely.
- Press Release should not have a number... use this only when you think you have something new regarding your company that will attract users. Use it to entertain users and not get links...
I know the plan available here is not complete but still way better than the one you have! You plan give a strong feeling that it revolves around getting links (many tactics you have mentioned will offer your low quality links only.) and my plan is more towards users and targeted audience so that you get only high quality links naturally.
SEO has changed a lot not instead of building links you have to create scenarios and situations that attract links naturally.
Hope this helps!

RE: Increasing Search Queries
Nov 5th 2012 is the exact data of the 21st Google Panda rollout!
Are you a victim of it? May be, because the date is exactly the same data when Google rolled out hte update on Panda. Here is the like to it! http://www.seroundtable.com/google-panda-21-15918.html
I guess when you need to do is to figure out what quires are lost and what pages were ranking against it.. once done, start fixing the pages in terms of on-page and content and get more natural links to it and most probably things will go good with you again!

RE: Should we 301 redirect our old domain to the new domain
Ok, in a way you are saying you have two different website one is the old one and one is the new one… or both domains open up a single website? If both websites are different then I would advise you to play safe and do not redirect instantly because redirection can cause a dip in conversions…
In that case you should focus on building links for new domain and rank it on keywords where your old keywords are located and then redirect if you want…
If this is two domains open up one website only, then isn’t it redirect already?
Still a little confusing but I am trying to answer!
-
RE: Should we 301 redirect our old domain to the new domain
Now this is confusing again... you said your old domain is not ranking or any phrases....if this is the case then redirecting 301 to new domain is the option and you will not see any dip in traffic or conversions...
but if you are saying that your old domain is ranking then the strategy will be different.
-
RE: Should we 301 redirect our old domain to the new domain
Check the back link profile of your Old domain at step one if it is fine and no junk link is there in the link profile... then go ahead and redirect it 301 to the new URL... It’s always good to get link juice that you are wasting anyways...
But if there is a lot of junk in the link profile of the old URL i will consider dropping that and go for the new URL as a standalone property...
In both the cases your future link building and SEO efforts should be on the new domain.

RE: Blog on Subdomain vs. Subdirectory - Best Practices
Well there is a very old debate and many SEO will recommend you using sub directory instead of sub domain.
Reasons why you should use Sub directory instead of sub-domain:
- Search engine still counts sub domain as another website so if the blog is in sub directory it will be considered as the part of the website
- Your over all SEO efforts will impact on sub directory which is not the case in terms of sub domain.
- Its way easier to rank for long tail keywords with sub directory instead of sub domain.
If SEO is not a problem for you are you are more interested in branding then i think subdomain goes well as its easier to remember and write directly in the URL bar.
-
RE: Confirming Robots.txt code deep Directories
that's right!
Disallow: /root/this/ will bock the complete directly whereas,
Disallow: /root/this/that will only block the "that" within "this"
hope this helps!

RE: Can someone clarify the importance of Scribe SEO?
Keyword density is a real shit and i guess i have talked about this a million times and i have some strong logic behind this...
1. Write for Humans not Machines
Besides search engine, there are humans who must be more important than any other machine on earth (even more important than Google) because they pay you the real money. If you are going to care too much about keywords and not caring about how that will impact user experience you might win the rankings but might not win customers and all you will gain out of it will be the increase in bounce rate (may be some un-loyal customers).
2. Google is changing
Google is changing like anything... so getting top rankings for your desired key phrases just by keeping a good percentage of keyword density in it, might not work...
Why not play natural?
It’s good to be natural. It’s good to write for humans and not machines...so don’t really care about the density of keyword in the document but care more about how people will react to it.
Scribe SEO?
This software seems promising to me in a one go as it allows you to extract what’s hot from difference resources and get you the topics that will be most attracted to your audience in the current times.
Calculating keyword density can be a part of it but i don’t think they are based on this... so go creative and use this tool to get suggestions but relying on any tool (even SEOmoz) will be dangerous as this industry love quick changes...
-
RE: Do exact matter domain not matter anymore?
Just pointers... don’t rely on it... Google is changing fast and you never know when they might do that if they are not doing it at the moment...
If it matches your brand go for it but if not then prefer to go for a brand related URL instead of a keyword...
-
RE: Keyword Rankings nos showing up?
There can be a problem with the ranking history or something...if there is anything like that SEOmoz is awesome at updating their community people thought twitter... or you can email them at help@seomoz.org and i am sure they will be happy to assist you.

RE: Best way to handle with a Multiple Langue Issue
I don’t see any need of another website targeting another location... absolutely no need of it! You can go with the same website and handle the English version either in subdirectory or sub domain.
or
You can also set the IP tracking so if someone is coming to your website from other parts of the world then Mexico they will see the English version of it and if people are coming from Mexico they will see the Spanish version of it...
Hope this helps!
-
RE: Recovery from Penguin removing internal urls permanently replace with new
To be honest we all know that penguin is quite difficult to handle so maybe it can work but there are an equal chance that it is not going to work...
Well I like the idea of dumping some URLs that contain fishy links...and create entire new pages...but what if the penguin is on the domain level and not on the page level? I think in that way this tactic might not work...
-
RE: Will pages irrelevant to a site's core content dilute SEO value of core pages?
I don’t think this will be a good approach… I don’t see these pages are completely irrelevant! But my recommendation is to engage it properly with product pages and if possible get some good links on them instead of including no-index on the pages…
-
RE: Improving SERP rankings via strategic SEO tactics
Ok this sounds like an easy question…
There are two major parts where you need to focus on!
- Link Building: Try and get links from relevant resources pointing back to your targeted pages and this will give a hint to Google about your authenticity and relevancy against your keyword.
- Social Media: Try and get some social signals for it. Google+ and Twitter sharing can be a good idea for this.
More links and social shares you will have you will notice a clear positive spike in rankings.
hope this helps!

RE: Multiple domain level redirects to unique sub-folder on one domain...
Adam I think a lot about this even before you actually come up with this question and I thought best URL structure you can follow in this case is of about.me
- You cannot park many domains (ideally one domain for each business page)
- Too many domain level redirects might kill your site and at the same time 301 redirect from domain to a specific page will not let main domain stay in SERPs.
- Canonical can work but again you cannot eat the search engine love.
But there is one thing that you cannot do!
How about shortening the URL?
For instance you have a BOB pizza in Ohio so instead of having a URL http://www.menue.com/pizza/OH/bob-pizza/ why not go for a smile and short URL that looks great with branding http://menu.com/bobpizza/
The URL is short so you can easily use in branding plus search engine will not exclude this in Google... when people will share this short version of URL the domain authority of the overall domain will automatically improved.
Hope this idea might work for you...

RE: Google is just plain confusing now
Zakaria I understand how frustrating it can be for a person who worked hard to attain the rankings but somehow Google update negatively affects the rankings and ultimately as a result you lost rankings, traffic and business...
But, Google is getting itself smarter everyday and at the same time offering a clear advise to businesses that not to completely relay on Google or else you will be dead soon.
In my opinion Panda and then Penguins were good updates but there are more needed in order to kick SPAM and low quality content out from the search results.
Why drop in rankings...
Obviously there can be multiple reasons to it...see when your rankings started to go down and at the same date check any Google updated rolled out... if yes read about the details of the update and fix the problems accordingly...
Remember: This almost is the era where penguin and panda are on the mission to kick low quality websites (containing low quality links) out of the search engine and give open space to people who are offering creative, authentic and relevant content in search engines...start and continue to build content around your audience that produce quality and you will see a jump in rankings again!

RE: Show root domain (that is 301 redirected) in SERP?
Adam I didn’t really find out any good resource to back my opinion but I have worked with multiple sites and I can say that when you 301 redirect multiple domains on different pages of your website it gives Google a suspicious clue about your authenticity and trust as most spammers use this tactic in order to grab traffic and rankings for many fat head key phrases…
As far as my knowledge goes canonical should not have a negative impact at all as this s a way of telling Google what is the original version of the content and there is a fair possibility that a great content can be reused at 100s of times….
-
RE: Is it bad to have same templates for all of my EMDs
no clue seriously! Google is in the teen age and doing all the smart things that a super awesome kid should do to prove himself the best among others (sometime it didn't went well...)
I must not say it is not possible but at the moment there is no such thing like this!
-
RE: Show root domain (that is 301 redirected) in SERP?
Adam at least from the 301 and canonical this approach will not work because canonical means that you are telling Google where original content is located so it is logical that Google will index the original content instead of the duplicate one...
I am not sure what will be the perfect way to do this but remember too many domain level re-directions to the different page of my main URL can be another major problem in the eye of Google.
-
RE: No manual spam actions found - still my site does not rank
The website looks decent and on-page in my opinion is way above than average websites in this industry... (Although your Google Maps and Yelp logo down the page contain the same URL #justnoticed but it has nothing to do with SEO and rankings...)
I can see a major mistake at the link building side and that is the improper use of anchor text that are pointing back t your site... Actually many links pointing back to your site contains the keyword but very few links contain the brand name which is absolutely unnatural.
My advice to you is to build some high quality links with the variation of brand name in the anchor text and you will see a change soon...
As this is not a manual SPAM action so no matter what you have to wait Google to refresh the changes and then only you will be able to rank again (IMHO) and this filing a reconsideration request in this scenario won’t work!
-
RE: Site not responding well to Link Building
I think George’s question is still valid what kind of link building are you performing... i mean if you are up to forum profile links, directories, blog comments then it is fairly possible but if you are really up to quality link building then this is not a normal scenario and should be analyzed properly...
-
RE: Is it bad to have same templates for all of my EMDs
I am assuming that you are talking about design template of the EMDs (websites) so in that case from the SEO point of view there won’t be any problem but from the user point of view people might frustrates by going to different domains but finding the same kind of websites... but again every niche’s behavior towards website is kind of different.
from the technical website there is no problem in having the same template!
-
RE: Show root domain (that is 301 redirected) in SERP?
301 is a permanent URL redirection that means that page you are looking for is redirected to a new location and that location is (www.domain.co.au/new-url)
As far as my knowledge goes Google will not include this in index due to the fact that it is permanently redirecting to another URL so why not take USER to the original URL instead of the URL that redirects... (I think this is an efficient approach).

RE: Twitter DA
Yes! its up now... it says 100 DA for facebook at my end!

RE: Has anyone seen direct improvement after April 23 by requesting reinclusion?

How much time, effort and cash to do the link cleanup... I believe this is very much depends upon how you want to go with the cleanup process... I really like this post regarding that by Cyrus Shepard http://cyrusshepard.com/boom-1-email-60-bad-links-gone-4-tools-for-easy-link-cleanup/

RE: Good or Bad? - buying a .com domain name that is already branded under a different county code like .nl but a different business model completely
My bad completely but as you said:
Seeing that this business (example.com) will be based here in the USA and theirs (example.nl) is in the Netherlands and they are both completely different models, is this ok?
I am not saying you will or plan to hijack traffic but some of the traffic will move to your domain (as many people do try .com instead of the country level tld).. But yes I got your point and from that angle my answer was of less or no help!
Sorry about that!
-
RE: Good or Bad? - buying a .com domain name that is already branded under a different county code like .nl but a different business model completely
Shame to a brand that left the .com domain free J but to be honest it’s a bad idea in my opinion and I will not at all recommend doing that... why?
1. Different country
Usually people around the world when typing URL uses .com as most of the times and this will allow you to capture their traffic but there are two major reasons why that will increase your bounce rate without giving you any significant conversions...
- Different country traffic
For instance your brand website is something that is not catchy to their country then they will more likely to switch as they were not looking for your website anyways...
- Offers not valid
For instance you have a great product that is catchy and may be you are able to attract some of their traffic in to leads... what if you do not offer delivery services to that country or delivery charges makes thing expensive enough... either way they will more likely to switch instead of giving you any real sales
2. Different Business Model
For Instance the brand in a different country offer dental surgery and i have a .com website that is an animal food store online.
I might be able to attract lot of traffic but will it offer me any real conversions... i don’t think so!
Try and work for conversions instead of traffic hacking or you will end up watching at how much bandwidth has been used but you might not able to see good conversions out of it.
-
RE: Sending autmated queries to Google hurting SEO?
Almost all the time your website is a different entity and your computer IP for which you are sending automated rank checking request is something different...
I don’t see any point where Google will penalize or discount your website in SERP results because of sending automated request to Google... i don’t see any relation in between two...
It is advisable not to send automated request to Google but affecting ranking through this makes no sense to me...
-
RE: First links for a new site?
This can be different for everyone and by the way there is no real rule for it so i believe being random and grabbing the opportunities as soon as they come is the best way to start with it...
For directories I think I will go for BOTW if i have budget for directories but if not then i might drop both options as they give very little help in terms of getting higher in SERP result pages.
-
RE: All Keywords Down.
I am not sure how to respond to it as your information is quite less...at least prove the URL so that i can exactly look in to the issue and can help you with possible fixes...
At the moment i can say this can be Panda, Penguin and if you have the exact match domain then this can be one of the possibilities as Goole comes up with a small algorithm update about EMD.
Try to provide the URL so that we all can get more in to your problem in specific....
-
RE: Losing the WWW?
Hurting? NO!
Not Helping? This is not the case either.
Actually you are missing the opportunity to be smarter on links... If you are getting quality links with www then you should use the same URL as upon redirection (301) some of the link juice will be left.
As you said you made most of the links with-www then you should try redirecting all versions of URL to www-version so that you can earn the most out of it...
-
RE: My Website is not being crawled by Google last 15 days
Ok i guess the problem is that website is crawled but not indexed and there can be several reasons for it...
Here are few things you can do to say hi to Google and in way request them to re-crawl your website....
- Try updating page content more frequently..
- Share it on social media especially on twitter and Google+
- Increase the crawl rate in Google webmaster tool (I know it has nothing directly to do with it but it works for me... most of the times)
- Try to get some links on the home and internal pages
- Do some social bookmarking of internal pages (not for link but for crawling purposes)
Hope it will help!
-
RE: The best way to spend 4 hours/day on offsite SEO?
BIG question Ryan, but if I cut all the crap the result would be something like this…
Some directories are really good while others are really bad so if you really know what good directories are go for it but if you don’t then don’t do the wild guess kind of a thing or judge the quality by the website’s layout!
SEOmoz have bunch of good directories in their list so you can go though the full list within your paid SEOmoz account see if you can go with those….
-
RE: How to set Home page for the best effect
My suggestion is not different from others so i think i will also advice and recommends you to use ‘/’instead of default.aspx and more...
I know you want to get better results and traffic from search engine but to be very honest...with ASP websites it’s a real pain (if you are using ASP platform...) I think following things should be considered as more important than adding keywords in the URL...
- There should be a proper navigational structure and pages should be 301 redirected instead of 302 (if any)
- Use single version of URL
- Add kick ass content
- Get quality links to it
- Keep a check of functionality and load time of the website so that things can stay under control
And more...
I think adding too many keywords that does not add value to user will hurt from search engine point of view as search engines are trying hard to come as nearer as possible to how human brain thinks...
-
RE: The best way to spend 4 hours/day on offsite SEO?
I think this is one of the best ways to get your website kicked hard by penguin... To be really honest i can say NO to your idea!
I guess if a guy can work for you 4 hours a day and you want him to do quality link building for you then you should tell him to find link opportunities for you instead of blogs and forums that offer do follow link...
- Tell him to find the website that allow guest posting and are related to your niche.
- Tell him to find websites that are link to broken links of any of the website
- Tell him to email them and request links from them
- Tell him to search the image that you are using on your website to see who else are using it to ask link from them...
And this way you will be able to build a legitimate link profile instead of spammy link building that usually starts with do follow blog commenting...
-
RE: Keyword stuffing - is it true?
Not really sure about this but i guess you should email to help team at SEOmoz and ask them if this tool support multi-language... Although i never tried using another language in this tool but i guess it doesn't
I think still the best idea is to email help@seomoz.org and they can tell you the best regarding this.

RE: Where to find database optimize expert ? (My website get down every day)
If you are looking for an agency or a freelancer to help you with that I guess the it is best to post job on twitter with the relevant hash tag or maybe you can search on Google for some agency who offer similar kind of services...

RE: How to promote good content?
I think you have a PDF and all you want to do is to promote the website within the targeted audience and get down downloads for the ebook. More downloads means more email subscriptions and this you will use further for promotional emails.
To be honest, If I will be at your place i would have plan the promotion even before the content, but now when you have done this here is the recommended action plan you can follow!
Decide Clear goals:
This will help you identify that your overall promotional plan is getting any success or not. Try to make few clear, measurable goals from the promotional plan. With the ebook you should consider the following goals as important
- Specific number of email subscription.
- Specific number of links you will get on an ebook
- How much quality traffic i should receive
- Specific number of leads for my business.
- Number of tiwtter followers should increase
- Number of facebook followers should increase to a certain extent.
Once the goals are decided now it’s a time for a promotional plan and to achieve each part of the goal you should promote accordingly. Like for example for Facebook and twitter you can invite the people and pass them a book upon a tweet or a facebook like...
Blogger Outreach is also a good idea, you can also try Press Release... as this is a guide, contacting institutes and schools that offer related course can also be of great help...
This is a creative game to think, scale under your budget and do it...
-
RE: Advice with keywords - category - Forum
The overall idea makes sense as you want to target specific people who are really looking for the kind of content you offer but what the suggestion about keywords and description there is a slight problem and that is that this will also kick the users who are searching for nightlife in Birmingham...
How about going like this?
Title: What’s on in the Nightlife of Birmingham?
Description: carry on with the result of the information in the description.
This way you will kick the irrelevant searches as well as welcome the people who are looking for your kind of content.
Hope this helps!

RE: Multiple Listings in Larger City with Multiple Addresses?
I am not sure the question itself is quite confusing but as far as my understanding goes here is the answer:
If a client has 3 different business addresses in 3 different cities that mean you can include 3 listings for client so why choose anyone, why not include all and optimize them completely?
You can always get a way to completely optimize the listing and get reviews (in terms of local)... if this is what you are looking for.
