I know where you are coming from David but to be honest i don't think Google will look too depth in to it and on the other hand you cannot stop (even your competitors) to build links on your redirected domains... so its better to play safe! (My opinion!)

RE: Multi domain redirect to single domain
I would redirect all the domains to the primary domain and make sure they are done via a 301 redirect.
Here, if from Primary domain you mean to say the main domain then i might disagree you here because if you are going to redirect tons of website to the main website... this is a clear indication to Google that i am taking all the domains and pointing it to one place so that i can eat as much traffic as possible which is not really a good strategy in Google's eye!

RE: Multi domain redirect to single domain
That's true! also do not act like a network.. Google hates it!
-
RE: Multi domain redirect to single domain
Ok this is interesting… I had a client who has several domains like around 12 redirecting to the main website (different URLs) and I didn’t see any problem with that…
40 seems a BIG number to me and it can show a red flag to Google… keeping the Mikes idea in mind why not divide the domains…
Out of 40 domains let’s say use 5 for industry related blog and update them one a month with some quick link building on it.
Other 3 as QnA websites… mostly it will be a UGC data so it won’t increase too much of your work…
Redirect 5 websites on different URLs of the main website….
Use the next 2 domains on a review website… again a UGC so not much work in a long term…
(use c class IPs)
… and the same way divide the domain pointing from one website to different others and optimize them to get traffic from them as well…. Why I think it will be interesting is because it will take you to the safe place and at the same time you will be opening several different channels to attract qualified and targeted traffic to the website…

RE: Guest Blogging Questions
I Agree with Keri that your posts should be high quality and focused to provide information to user instead of getting a link from the desired anchor text!
-
RE: Wrong page being ranked
To me it’s a test and play process… test this and see what happen… if I will be at your place and nothing happened from it I would consider building some good links to PDF and pass an internal link to the targeted page… #Athought

RE: Guest Blogging Questions
Increasing your own social value though Guest Blogging is possible but it’s sounds like a BIG plan to me… you should write for known industry blogs and be active on social medias, build new connections, share others stuff and slowly and gradually you will see your social value will increase… (obviously if you want to stay natural while increasing your social value.)
-
RE: Guest Blogging Questions
I do agree with Neil to a higher extent but as far as the SEO bubble is concern there are few countable blogs I know that offer byline at the top…and to be really honest the DA of the domains are not really impressive (in most cases not all)
Guest Blogging words well for me because the KPIs were different for me… I am compiling a detailed post that will be live in the next week that features everything that Guest Blogging offer… it really depends what you are looking for from your Guest Blogging activity…
If SERP rankings are your ultimate concern… I believe targeting the good blogs and write solid posts can really help you achieve your target.
-
RE: Wrong page being ranked
I cannot come up with the exact problem unless the case is at the front of me but consider adding and internal link from PDF to a targeted URL (may be with an anchor text) and see the impact!
-
RE: Guest Blogging Questions
Ok it seems like you are looking Guest Posting from the link angle only…
- 1. Anchor in Body is better than Byline
This is true but not only because of the juice transfer ratio but because of the fact that guest posts are read by real people so while reading there are more chances that they will go though that link as well and might consider linking to it… so in a way there are chances to convert that one link in to multiple….
- 2. 2 Links in the same URL?
Yes Google will count the 1st one if Blog Post will target 2 links point the same URL.
- 3. Duplicate Byline
Honestly I have used the duplicate bylines and I personally don’t think it has a significant impact on links that are pointing out to your desired location… link juice will still be passed!
-
RE: To noindex or not to noindex
Nops, no need to include the no index tag as adding canonical is an indication to Google that what are the original pages that search engine need to index and crawl so al other pages then category pages will be crawled automatically.

RE: Penalized by Penguin 1.1 Release
Thanks Ryan, the reason i suggest Google Webmaster tool for extracting the link profile is because its a good point to start! then yes one can go deep in to links using other software...
-
RE: Targeting local keywords and service areas.
I can see where you are coming from… and to be honest this is not what I would prefer if I would be at your place.
Making keyword based pages is not really a good idea and it looks like you have build your website more for search engine and less for your users…
If I would be at your place I would have build services pages and tell my users in what areas I offer my services...
In order to gain top rankings from different location I would prefer the following strategy:
- Local Listings
- Yellow Pages and Aggregators
- Blog that will be updated frequently
- Social Medias
and I would have craft my link building activity that way that it allow me to gain top rankings and links from desired locations.
-
RE: Penalized by Penguin 1.1 Release
Kevin this could be the quality of links pointing to your website... if the quality of links is bad then it will eventually hurt your website as well... (happened with one of the client i have)
-
RE: Penalized by Penguin 1.1 Release
Kavin not to panic and planning a solid strategy is the real key to success…
If you are sure its Penguin… then get in to your link profile (best is to extract the link profile from Google Webmaster tool). Now when you have your link profile (may be in a csv) get in to it and figure out how many links are coming from your own network or network of websites… even more how many link pointing to your website that are already hit by penguin…
Clean your link profile and submit the reconsideration request to Google.
IT is good to build some good high authority links from different resources while removing links.
Removing links from 3rd party website is sometime difficult so in order to be successful one have to use every possible way to request the website to remove a link i.e phone, email and others.
-
RE: Is there a way to repost content (with permission) to another site without being penalized by Google?
You won’t be penalized for using someone else’s content on your website but it is always ethical to let people know about the original resource of content may be in the form of a link at the end of the post.
-
RE: To noindex or not to noindex
Ok I might sound completely stupid here as I never come across this case before but here is my hypothesis….
While searching for a keyword or URL you another field (may be a checkbox) that represents the category of search.
So, ones the new URL will generate it will come under the specific category automatically.
Customize the category pages so that they look different from each other.
Index the category pages and add canonical tag on any new generated URL of the category page. For example if the new page generates like www.yourwebsite.com/movies/ice-age -3/ this page should have the canonical tag to http://www.yourwebsite.com/movies/
Why?
Creating category pages will allow you more unique pages to get indexed in SERPs without the duplicate content issue. Adding canonical tag on all other URLs will tell category pages are the real pages that Google should consider.
This might help you cater more chances to earn more search traffic from Google.
**This is my assumption what I think should work!

RE: SEO Referral
Directly coming out with the name is quite difficult for anyone as SEO is kind of a service which is strategically different for almost every business SEOs work with, but here are some key indicators of an ethical SEO company they might possibly do your job.
- Ethical SEO agencies love to educate their clients and potential customers and there is always a good level of transparency between the client and the customers.
- Ethical SEO Company might not do BIG promises but will explain why they won’t be able to achieve sky rocket traffic in the next 3 months.
- Ethical SEO Company will be able to answer your quires and clear the misunderstanding you might have as a business owner about SEO and digital marketing.
- Ethical SEO agencies are usually open on social media (or at least there business owners) so see how open they are on social medias.
If the recommended list of SEOmoz is expensive for you, I would highly recommend you to check their list of top/active users http://www.seomoz.org/users you might find a consultant under your budget within top 100 or less may be.
Finding a consultant from another country can be a good idea because they can be less expensive for you due to currency difference.
Hope this helps!

RE: How do I fix the h1 tag?
What is H1?
Go to the page, right click between the page and click ‘view page source’ on other window will open the code page… on the code page press ‘ctrl+F’ and search ‘
’… text between
and
is considered to be the tag H1.
How to fix two H1s?
I suppose you are using the common HTML… so download the page, open it in the Macromedia Dreamweaver or notepad. And remove the H1 which you think its less important…save and upload the files again.
Most of the times this hurts the CSS so I would recommend you to consult your designer or developer to do this job for you.

RE: How much would or have you pay for a domain name?
I do agree with Ryan… It’s more about what you are asking to yourself while buying the domain. I mean if you are paying more than usual for a domain name (decent one) then you should know whether it is going to help my business grow? Not only from the SEO point of view but from branding point of view that will it leaves a positive impact to your targeted audience? And more related questions…

RE: How do i start ranking on bing?
To be very honest if you have submitted an xml sitemap you can submit use it for Bing as well though Bing tool box but I don’t think this activity will help or stop you from ranking in Bing.
Bing crawlers will eventually find your website and will crawl and index it… so letting them know that you exist is great but they will catch you and index you (sooner or later)…
Your question got no specifications but if the case is that you are indexed but not ranking then rules are almost more or less same as it is for Google… build Good content attract valuable links, repeat the process and be a winner.
If you have any specific case please add more details to your question!

RE: How to Start a Social Networking Site
Sounds EPIC! but in my opinion you at least have to share your niche and goals to answer your goals... because:
- There are pre made codes for social networking sites already available... are you going to go with that and alter as per your requirements...
- What special feature are you going to make public..
- Will it be mobile friendly?
these are few questions.. and on basis of that one will be able to answer about the total players in the team what should be their skill set and all!
-
RE: How to Start a Social Networking Site
Joel, I am answering this question but to be honest this is a BIG question (I mean it) and I might miss so many points because starting a social media site is not as simple as any other business site (off-course if you need this to be successful.)
I think the question you put on the board are the secondary questions, I think the following should be your primary questions:
- What you social media website is going to do that anyone else is not doing at the moment? In short USPs?
- What niche/audience are you going to target?
- How you are planning your Return on Investment?
- What would be your promotional plan?
- How much are you ready to invest on your marketing and what kind of ROI are you going to expect from that?
- Who are your competitors?
- What you competitors are doing in the market? How successful they are?
I am missing question I know but these questions should come before you should ask for how many staff member you should have what code languages they should know and others…
Above mentioned questions are important because I have seen many social networking websites that go fail because they didn’t plan effectively. I would prefer to solid plan the stuff and then move on the implementation part accordingly.
Best of luck!

RE: Domain expiration and seo
Joel, this was a buzz in the bubble that you should register your domain for longer period of time and all that but to be honest research and experiments that i run simply proves me that this is no impact on your rankingss.
I mean if you are doing great on your content and attracting high quality links all ethically there is no way you will get down in SERPs just because your competitor have invest on the domain for 10 years and you did that for a year only.

RE: URL structure for multiple cities?
Plan for today didn’t make sense to me and as far as the URL structure is concern you should have to have ea long term planning for that.
If I would be at your place I would be happy to see the URL structure which is somewhat similar to you. For example I launch a bakery business in Melbourne my ideal URL should be:
this way the URLs will be organized and user can easily find where his business can be available, even by looking at the URL.
As far as your idea of 302 redirections is concern I might not support that so if redirection is necessary at any point then go for 301 permanent redirections.
Hope this helps!

RE: If I write an article that contains a link back to my site, should I post in only one place or can I post it several times?
It have nothing to do with links but as a whole if you are going to create one piece of content and add that on several places what is going to happen as a whole? You are creating multiple new spots that contain same content.
Google crawls the web and when found 1 piece of content on several different locations the worth of content go down and link didn’t really help you… in some cases link harm your overall reputation.
It is always a best practice to add 1 article on one place only in order to maintain the value of the content. As far as the article directories in specific are concern I would personally recommend you not to spend too much time on this as it contain a very little link value and instead focus on Guest blogging that contain huge return on investment.

RE: Should I 301 a penalized domain to another domains subfolder?
I have to agree with Ryan that not much data is available on this but let’s look at the theory for a while...
As far as I know 301 is a redirection that allows visitor to redirect from old page to a new page and pass all its link value to the new page… this means Google knows your old page and the fact that it had a penguin hit.. Chances are that the penalty will transfer to the new domain as well…
I have one of my client website hit by penguin and the problem is that many of links pointing to the website got a hit by penguin…
I think the best idea is the hard way… I mean get in to every link check if this link is not low quality or Spam and in case of yes contact them and do almost every effort to remove links that are coming from SPAM or low quality sites….

RE: IMPACTS on Moving Online Store to New Platform
This is a good idea to get a control over the pages...
Although i am no smart but in the beginning years i played a lot with osCommerce and i can simply say that is platform is not SEO fitted. Zen cart is even a better option but yes if you give me a open choice i will go for your option!
-
RE: IMPACTS on Moving Online Store to New Platform
I have this kind of experience in the past and as per the best of my knowledge you have to be very planed before executing stuff or else you will see some not easily irrecoverable damages that will create a problem.
Here are few things that you should plan
- Plan the redirection
As you said your complete URL structure will be changed this means you have to create and excel sheet to note all your current URLs and set the new URLs in the next column and set 301s accordingly.
- Picking the right eCommerce Platform
This is critical, I have worked with Joomla (I hate it), Wordpress, osCommerce, Zencart and Magneto and I have a good time playing with Magneto and Zencart.
There are actually several things to plan before switching from one platform to other keeping SEO on the safe side!
The best advice is to heir a person with good SEO (eCommerce) experience and he can do the good job for you!
-
RE: One folder/keyword seems penalized.
If I would be at your place I would have use the verity of anchor text instead of just one anchor text that is Nike… why not change to set the verity of key phrases like Nike Shoes, Nike with area name, Nike with country name and other that go fit with your website.
Try to get links from different and unique domains instead of getting multiple links from the same domain and this will help you… The kind of decrease sometimes is just the result of fluctuation so check before you actually start implementing massive links on the page.
The idea to run a small promotional activity that is relevant to your category can also help! #justsaying
hope this helps!

RE: How to launch a Google + Campaign?
Hey Joel,
Although I didn’t have a firsthand experience but I think I can pass my suggestions to you that sounds very actionable…
Targets: target is to get targeted audience to signup and then +1 your page
Target Audience: I am not sure about your target audience but let’s say age group between 25 to 35 years of people is your target audience.
How to go!
Do not just ask them to like the page or add you in circle but instead engage with them in such a way that they get encouraged a get signed up to Google+ and like your page.
For example:
Offer your audience an amazing discount or surprise gift on buying over $150.. this is common but you have to make it different by offering this offer to Google+ users only.
Tell them that if you want to avail the offer you have to be a Google+ user and should added your business in the circle.. this way targeted people will add you in circles… this will attract the people who are not on Google+ and will encourage them to join Google+ +1 your page and avail the discount.
(This is just a rough idea but brainstorming different ideas will make you come up to a good idea that will surly like by your people).
Best of luck!

RE: Does SEOMOZ have article writing software?
As far as i know the community of SEomoz.. i don't think they even prefer using content writing software as mostly writing is all manual and need lot of research and analysis instead of some machine to write for you...
Although SEO Gadget have a content generation tool that can help you get lot of ideas for writing content https://seogadget.co.uk/content-strategy-generator-tool-v2-update/

RE: Business/Personal Blog Duplicate Content
you are right but at time writing two different unique pieces of content takes too much time my suggestion was considering the time factor!
-
RE: Business/Personal Blog Duplicate Content
I thought of it too but i don't think this will be a friendly option as he said some of the posts should be on both sites not all! and using RSS for some posts might need alteration in the business blog
-
RE: Business/Personal Blog Duplicate Content
Ok, this is find there are two ways of doing it see what sounds easy to you…
- Why not create two content on the same topic (re warding) the concept of the blog post is same but they will not be duplicated. Personally if you ask me I will not prefer this way as it’s quite lousy…
- The other way is smarter way… As you are not focused on your personal blog for SERPs so update the same content on both blog but on your personal blog set the canonical URL of your business blog (post URL) and this way Google get to know that what the original version of the content is and will index and act accordingly.

RE: Do Outbound NoFollow Links Reduce the Page's Ability to Pass PageRank?
While back I write a post on Search Engine Journal where I talk about whether or not Google passes a link juice on no follow tag… to be honest to me there is no clear answer to that but I follow the best advice by Ross Hudgens that consider it 0 and act accordingly.
-
RE: I am still confused about anchor text and penalties
Ok I guess you took it a little differently… let me explain it to you.
In order to rank well you need lot of quality back links pointing to your website but if you have lots of back links coming from different websites pointing the same keyword then this is the problem!
There is no problem in keywords having in title, H1 and body but do not stuff it and use verity of anchor text internally and for link building.
Use of anchor text is good but over using the same anchor text will hurt (this is the case for non branded keyword)
For instance if you have a keyword ‘Oakland widget’ it can be use in verity of ways that includes:
- Oakland widget
- Widget Oakland
- Widgets in Oakland
And more long term phrase…
Hope it helps…

Website is not getting indexed in Google! Not sure why?
I just came up with my new blog, its not live yet but the 1st landing page is ready, up and running… all is fine but here is the only problem is its not getting indexed in Google and I am not really sure why?
- .xml sitemap is there
- Google webmaster and analytics are there
- Website contain at least that much real social shares that it should get indexed in Google
- Few Links may be coming from Famous Bloggers and SEOmoz (both sites are very authentic in their respective domains)
- It’s the 4 day the website is up
I don’t think website is not getting indexed in Google just because it contains 1 landing page and a thank you page! Any clue or help will be appreciated.
www.setalks.com is the domain

RE: Local Real Estate Site vs Larger National Sites
As I have worked for a BIG real estate website I can give you one secrete advise to get more targeted niche and conversions as compare to large websites.
As you are a small website you reach is limited as compare to large website so defiantly your keywords will be limited as compare to large website… I would advise you to produce quality content that talk about their problems and solution of your audience and as your competitor (being a giant) cannot really target specific area, by doing that you can easily win traffic, trust and conversion in your limited area!
Once people started to like your produced content they will possibly share and link to you that will give you a batter placements in SERP as well.

RE: Google Places / Map Results CTR vs Top Organic Result
Being on number 1 is always better then number 2 but if the 2nd place is of Google place with the map with it I guess it should attract more eye balls but to be sure why not you play a heat map on SERP results to have an idea! #justsaying

RE: How do i fix my duplicate title tags
As never used that builder myself so i am not sure but while research over your question... this is something that i find! http://faq.1and1.com/applications/websitebuilder/websitebuilder_design/5.html can be useful for you!
-
RE: How do i fix my duplicate title tags
Simple!
download the website (in case of simple html or php website) open it in Dreamweaver and edit the titles to make it unique... if you do not have Dreamweaver you can do this by opening it in a notepad find the tag and edit it to make it unique... upload the files and you are done!
that's it!

RE: Which is the Best Web Hosting Company?

RE: Review of on page SEO - Please help
The great idea is to use the SEOmoz on-page Analysis tool and you will have the patter idea of how page is working in terms of on-page optimization.
But in a single go I noticed few thing that you should consider changing like internal linking, you add 4 to 5 internal links in a 5 lines of content.. Try to reduce down to 1 at max.
Content is not interesting, try to add quality content that should be loved by users and search engine.

RE: Does Link Juice Flow From Banner Ads.
you can always request the web-master to put a no follow tag, i don't think there will be an issue with that! (if you explain them the consequence of not adding a no-follow tag)
-
RE: Does Link Juice Flow From Banner Ads.
Honestly, I would prefer to stay white hat in that case and put a no-follow tag because playing outside the Google guideline will always a risk as you never know when Google see you, find you and take you down!...
I have seen many people don't do it by purpose but Google punishments sometimes are hard to stand! Obviously everything depends upon if Google see this but still it's better to stay on the safe side!
-
RE: Does Link Juice Flow From Banner Ads.
Well According to Google, Advertising links if passing links should contain a no-follow tag on them or else they are violating the Google advertisement laws…
I don’t think it’s a good idea because if caught, the punishment can be a hard hit… putting a no follow link on banner ad seems to me as a safe option.

RE: Wordpress duplicate pages
I agree with Kane, Also, SEOmoz have the good guide regarding this http://www.seomoz.org/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success check this out and you will have a clear idea of what to do when you stuck with this situation.

RE: Selection of the Right Keywords - Some insights needed!
I didn’t see any problem with the idea. But long tail or short tail keywords are not defied on basis of its competition but because of the length of the keyword.
I will consider ‘dermatology’ as a short tail keyword with low or medium competition. Keywords like ‘Laser Skin treatment drawbacks’ can be considered as a long tail keyword.
Adding the keyword in the title and still works (may be not as effective as it use to be) but I still prefer people using it as it tells more about what the page is all about.
