You and EGOL made great points around why no CMS. I agree. As an agency we just don't have that luxury for our clients and so we use them. Just two sides to a coin.

Does not take from your site. This type of feed, to some degree was presumed to bring freshness or keep a site current. Most are in sidebars and I think are likely devalued or irrelevant. (See Alan's comment - there is a reason he does it that way.)

If you want to add something to your site for your visitors and you believe it is relevant to them, do it. Set it where it always opens to a new tab or page so that if they close the feed page they landed on before returning, your page is still on their screen.

As to looking at a site to try to understand it, I can't. I see sites everyday that i have to believe have a purpose...I will never know what it is.

This is a thought provoking question. When I first read Alan's response I thought, "wait a minute, Alan" and then realized he answered it perfectly for Alan. I am not a developer and the thought of providing a client a site that required them to have one available did not make sense. At the same time, I can tell you with several of the known CMS's available there are problems within the SEO that if not addressed are at least annoying.

So, I would say, to the developers:

Use a CMS that allows the client the most ease of use within the context of providing the best framework for their project.

Make the key on site/on page SEO pieces easy for someone with even a small amt of ability: Title tags (Alan would give us code that would not allow a duplicate as an example), You would be required to use an H1, etc.

I would tell them I wanted a url structure that was almost flat.

That an internal link had to go to something relevant.

But, before I went to them, I would be very clear what it was we desired the web site to do for us.

You can do this with Joomla using practically any news feed. We use joomla on many client sites and have feeds. With most you can control how much of the feed to show. Many use Feed Burner but there are others that work well.

You are being perfectly clear and these, in my opinion, are not duplicate content and I will endeavor to show you how I drew that conclusion:

First, in looking at your code, you have a feed that is throwing up the blog from 8/19 that has the above quote in it. That is why it shows on your home page. 
On the next couple of pages they are:

So, your issue is really not one of duplicate content, per se. But, there is a way to fix it.

Since most of these are archives, go into all in one SEO (this is in your WordPress dashboard), Plugins (Yes it is there, I see it  

You will see All In One SEO (I have attached screenshots to assist you)

The first image is just the top of All in one SEO, the second is scrolling down and the third is the one where you will see Use noindex for Archives:, No noindex Tag Archives:

Check each box. 
Now, note that if you go do a Site: again it will still be there and you will need to give it time to fall away. You could likely resubmit the sitemap, etc. but don't need to. Just wait.

This way Google will not index these and you will not have duplicate content issues. (I don't think you would have had an issue with it, but this will keep it clean for you.)

Ohhh, the magic question.... We are following about 20 smaller sites on Bing in a given vertical for professional practices. One of the clients is a personal friend and I happen look at his rankings on about half a dozen good terms for his profession. I was stunned when I saw he was ..... absent with drops of 8 to 40, 6 to 32, 7 to 41, etc. These are terms we had been tracking since August and had brought him up to over a couple of months. In about the last 3 weeks we have seen a significant downturn. 
Oddly, when look at competitors, we see across the board that there will be some who do not move at all and some that all of a sudden fall as well. So, yesterday, we picked 4 random (not statistically, but to us) sites all within Law and set up the following: Each day we are running rankings on each site for all engines for 4 significant keyword terms - Keyword A, B, C, D for Site 1 , Different Law type for Site 2 with different keywords, etc. In other words none of the sites are competing. For each we picked 3 competitors (none matching in any of the four sets) and, again, our random choice. We are going to follow the competitors as well for the same terms.
Obviously, we will find nothing verifiable from this but hope to find any type of pattern or similarity in those who do or do not move. At this point we are merely trying to establish a general heading.
While this does not provide an answer, at least I feel like I am moving toward.......something. We will adjust and keep you posted.

(I am wondering now if you gave me a clue) - the sites we are seeing the movement in are WP, but we have other Wordpress sites that have not. I am going to look at competitive sites and see if the ones that dropped are as well. Part two given pervasiveness would be to look at code for theme, etc. Will let you know.

No problem, I was just really struck by the humor in sitting there that morning. Thanks to you and all at SEOmoz for putting out a really great product and standing behind it. I really mean it. It changes peoples outcomes.

When you made the change back to original, did you resubmit the xml sitemap? I would give that a quick try. Also, to see if it is showing, Do a Site:exacturlofchangedpage  on Google. This should show if the page is there but not ranking for some reason.

First, you will need to define relevant for you. As to easily located, you will need to define easily. Everyone wants link building that is easy or easy to locate sources for. To date if it were easy, many of us would not be paid.

I would start with what you know about your business (I am assuming you have a few sites that you use and are not an agency). Who would be credible sources for you? Do you blog in that industry? Who does and can do you read them? Can you send out sample blogs or articles to them?

Then, you know who your competitors are most likely. I would look at the higher ranked ones and use Open Site Explorer and see who is linking to them. Those will be likely targets. I would take a look at what that links to/from to get an idea of what the one providing the link wanted. If you are in a highly competitive area like travel, etc. then you will see links that are for Chinese gambling sexual ginseng and you can just ignore them. Look for relevant again.

You will need to read a bit about link building, strategies for asking for links, reporting bad links, etc. Put it in the search bar top right of this page. Then, go reading.

The most important part of SEOmoz is the large group of highly competent (no not me, the others) individuals who answer questions, ask questions back, clarify, re-answer, and nail it. They even point out if they see where you are wrong and admit when they miss the mark. An example of what to read is here in a post from Cyrus Shepherd on Conquering Link Directory Best Practices. There are tons of these type posts and resources.

Are the tools any good? Again I point to the people who post and answer questions how many of them are pro or above members? They are either rich, easy, or they believe in the tools and the people on SEOmoz. But best yet is this, on Christmas Eve at about 230 pm CST I got a call from a potential client who with offices in Africa, South America, and the US who does a lot of business (I have been speaking with him for a couple of months).

While I have Spanish speaking clients and English, I do not have anyone there or with experience in Africa.  I told him the truth, if we can't help you there we will tell you. He said, oh, Africa's not that big of a problem...they all speak English and we have feet on the ground. Just the same, if I need help it is here on SEOmoz - but it won't be easy. (Yes, he is now a client).

Read everything you can find on here. When you see someone reference a post or article with a link, go read that. Ask every question you can and don't be afraid to be wrong. If you are willing to work, you can get there. And, if you find an easy way to get some quality, high page rank, relevant links, Please, Please let us know.

As I got my coffee and realized the news of the world had not changed I opened up the computer and saw your question. I immediately thought of one not mentioned in your list: WordTracker. I just started using it so jury is out and I still like keywords tool. James Norquay did a nice post on youmoz on advanced keyword research that is worth the read. 

Before I wrote a response to your question I was struck by how it was Christmas and I was looking at work. But, it really isn't work to me. (And we do our celebrating on Christmas Eve for any who think I may be a Grinch). So, I started writing about keywords and Christmas. Sorry, I just couldn't help myself.

I think you have your meta description set site wide in WP. You need to change that first. Then, I think you are also putting a meta description in on each page so, when you try to use mozbar for page elements, it has none as a default as it is reading two.

Go into your WP dashboard (this will depend a bit on what plugins you are using) and under settings, look for All in one SEO, or Yoast SEO for wordpress, etc. If something else, let us know. 
Here is a link for optimizing Yoast (this is one a lot of people use) meta description. 
For All in one SEO here is their main page. If you fix that, I think you will be on the way.

Also on the mozbar, when you click on the bookmark, the drop down has a highlighter for links. click on it. At the bottom of that will be a space where you can put in keywords and hit highlite and you will see the keywords. I put in "Some of the most quiet moments are" and nothing highlighted. I then picked a phrase I saw a couple of times "Start to Finish Guide." it showed up in the content and as anchor text. So, I am now 99% sure this is the issue.

When you look at the crawl errors in the campaign report (red box), where you see the forty in the red box, click or double click and give it a second. It will list out the urls. I will edit with a screen shot.

I can speak to this from what my developers say. I personally like StudioPress and have always felt it was a quality set of themes that provided a lot of what clients want in look and at the same time allowed us to personalize it to the degree that made it perfect.

Our lead developer who is a bright guy (prior to us he was a huge Drupal developer, etc. One a national award for a television station site from ABC) likes themeforest. From the point of view of additional coding our interns who are seniors in digital media at a university are able to work with it as well. So, I can't tell you from a pure code point of view, but as being the guy who says yes or no and who listens to the ones who get the job done, I would have to say we lean about 30 studiopress and 70 themeforest.

Ali, there is just not enough information to assist you. You need to provide either a url or some more descriptive data. There are just too many things that could cause a change. The first is did you change anything on the site? Is it highly competitive and have a bunch of new players come in, etc.

I have only see this happen when a change is made to a site. With penalties, there is simply no telling without more help from you.

I am not sure about the term link cannibalization. I think you are mixing two things. Excessive internal links and keyword cannibalization.

First on the internal link url.com/example to url.com/example the issue first to me is one of user experience and the second is that while it may not directly harm your ranking in the sense you are losing something, it does nothing to assist in crawling the site for the purpose of indexing which leads to ranking and could potentially do otherwise.

As to the shoes as keyword issue, at some point you have to offer differentiation to the software and to the client. If you are using the moz on page optimization and you put in shoes for the page, that is what it will look at. It is not looking at the site, it is looking at the page. So, if you have said on the page we have men's shoes, green men shoes, running shoes, ladies sating running shoes, etc. it is going to find every occurrence and report that. It has nothing to do with the link. The link issue is a different issue all together. You are linking to yourself for no reason.

Sometimes you say it so well.

I would think the .com could have an impact and the easiest way if available would be to simply have the .com redirect to the .nl, such that those clicking on .com end up on the .nl. The reason I say this is living in Houston many international flights go through Schiphol as a hub. Many people in the U.S. could be put off by the .nl (I have no empirical evidence however) for fear of language issues. I am from a multi linguistic family and I have to understand that not all people here see things in the same way.

One question is are you doing PPC?  If so, due to the top level domain changing when they click, it will be disapproved and you would have to instead set up the .nl with 301's to redirect to the .com. AdWords Rules on Domains/URLs This could be more of an issue that would limit what you do with the TLD change. But, when they click on .com they end up on .com and you were able to transfer your linking to then .com. My point here on the original idea of changing the TLD is that if it increases traffic to the site, it will likely increase ranking of same. What an excellent, thought provoking question.

My first thought on reading it was that you build landing pages around the new long tail keywords you are using. Then, I had to ask: On the .nl site this is in Dutch, correct? Or do you have one site with two languages available or do you have two distinct sites? In the case of one site, are there separate pages for each language or is there a translation program you are using?

Being in an area of the U.S. where we have Spanish and English (and Spanish is important due to population size) we deal with the multi language issues. We have a larger client who does business in Africa who has site in English only due to multiplicity of languages and prevalence of English.

I think separate pages with the English written by a fluent English speaker who truly understands Dutch and the opposite for the Dutch pages is the best way. There is no duplicate content penalty for differing languages. I would have them all on the same site with separate navigation, etc. If, however, you already have two sites, I would not really want to change that. At the end of the day, I think using separate landing pages for the new long tails is the best way to go up to the point where the traffic is so low as not to justify it; sorry, that is going to have to be a judgement call.

As to the fluctuation in .nl vs. .com,  In highly competitive spacesI see it every day on sites that are all English when we haven't done anything to the sites. If, however, you are making changes at the same time: you are going to see wider swings in ranking and you have to stay calm. I just finished looking at all English sites for an hour where we were making content changes. I felt like i was on a roller coaster! Can't imagine with that type site (rentals) and two languages and content changes.

I would love the additional details as to site set up with the Dutch/English and to know how you resolved this so that I, too, can learn from it.

Due to the scope of the Internet it takes a search engines bandwidth to be able to crawl the entire web. SEO moz hits about the top twenty five percent of links. If links are more recent, there is a chance they won't show up for 4 to 7 weeks due to the data having to be processed after the crawl and the sites crawled only once a month (you can see the dates on the site).

Majestic SEO offers a decent free service for your own sites, and the monthly if you handle a lot is small medium level is about $50 per month. Even with the free you will see a lot more links and it shows some additional data as well. For the paid, you get historic, etc.

A 301 redirect does not transfer rankings. So if your home page on micro site is ranked first for a given term, it does not mean a 301 will get you ranked first for that term. 
You have to compare the sites two pages (it sounds as if you are saying home page to home page). If one is ranking first for a term XYZ rental and the other is not, what are the content differences, title tag & other on page differences, etc. Have you looked at Google analytics to see if there is info there? Etc.

I would suggest putting the two url's out there and letting a mozzer assist. Or use your private question and get one of the associates to help (they are quite knowledgeable and like what they do - or are great actors!). You get one private question a monty.

Many people get worried that if they put their site URL's up someone is in someway going to learn from you ,etc and get ahead of you. It is really quite the opposite: You ask questions that you think you should know already and someone comes along who has been there and helps you out. Occasionally, there is an incorrect or incomplete answer and someone comes along and corrects the answer (I know, I have had some corrective assistance to a couple of answers I gave... but I manned up and thanked them If the sites are a client site as opposed to an owned site that is a bit different. But I have clients that allow me to post information about some of their sites and I do.

I have yet to see perfection in the SEO world. I have found some pretty smart people here though.

Google can now crawl and index Flash files

Google has been working on improving how they crawl and index rich content (such as Flash and JavaScript) for some time, and in fact have been able to extract some text and links from Flash files for a while. However, their methods weren’t perfect, and they tell me that this new technology from Adobe makes Google’s algorithms “less error prone” and enables them to access content created in any version of Flash in a variety of languages.

Since all of this was from 2007/2008, I believe there have been strides beyond but could not find any quotable sources. If your use is as you describe, I do not see it as a problem.Google with Youtube says they make sure there is content and HTML around it, etc.    
Today in SEO there are a lot who will say not to use flash; I do not think that is a reasoned comment. There are places for it and places where it is too obtrusive. I hate flash intros for example.

The 301 redirect would point this "root domain"  (mymicrosite.com) to www.mymaindomain.com/city/XXXXXXX

The key to this redirect is that you want to insure you 301 each url on the micro site to a specific url on the main site. You want to do this in the .htaccess file. You don't redirect the root domain to root domain.

Also you state the "site has no back links, no advance SEO", does it have any DA/PA? If the site has a PA 1, DA of 7 for example, I do not see where it will help you. When you redirect, you are trying to move the links to the main site so that you maintain that link juice to the new site (you will lose a bit 5 to10%). This way, when you change a domain name, sell a business, etc. you do not need to try to go to each site linking to the "old" site and ask them to link to the new.

With "what happens if it doesn't work, can I change back?" While I cannot say I have ever tried to, I can tell you that I have done a few redirects of sites and I always watched the old site to see if it lost value and the other gained.

I have a site we did a full redirect to new site in late August. When we initially did it, the old site home page had a PA 44 and a DA of 39, the new had PA 1 and DA 1. Today 3.5 months later Old site is PA 33 DA 31 and new site is PA 44 DA 33. The big difference is there are only two links showing for the old site now.

Since we handle a lot of Real Estate business, one thing you want to be sure of is that your Google Places and Bing Bus. Portal, Yahoo Local. Have the new site if at all possible. It may be fine for a short run, but you will gain more from having a correct, thorough local presence. Do the same with any citation sites.

There is some good advice here from. Scott is right that your example is not inappropriate. EGOL is steering you very well also. 
When using alt text, most do not take advantage of what it can do for you. You can use around 140 characters and give a good description of the image (as if someone blind was hearing it) along with using keyword relevant text. I recently read that by having your images with good alt text get ranked in images that does have an effect on organic. Now, it wasn't Google saying it, but to a degree it makes sense it would have an effect - how much is anyone's guess.

If your example is not close to what you are putting up, go with EGOL's advice and get a new image. (I suggest geo tagging it if at all possible as well).

The url for HPWhite press releases shows up as HPWhite.com on mozBar link analysis, but as the press release url for Golfer's Advice?!?!!?? Never seen that before.

Funny, I have spent the last two months with a Vocus rep trying to get me on PR web. I told them no because they want to dictate the quantity of press releases per month since I am an agency. So, pay it all up front then dribble it out for a year.

I know with the different levels there are different services, but I did not imagine there would be a difference in how they would backlink - very sleazy if true.

What about the way the url changes in the mozbar???

I kept scratching my head as to how a press release of 6 weeks ago had garnered such attention from a company that would not seem to have a huge traffic due to more obscure product offering and scientific subject (Analyses of Armor Industry versus Golf Advice). 
Then I realized that for HP White, Link Data was not about the PR. The url from mozbar was HPWhite.com not the above, I did not notice until I used OSE where same thing was happening. When I cut and pasted the above press release url for HP White and placed it in OSE this changed:

PA - 49   DA - 96 (2 links 2 linking root domains)

For Golfers advice (0 links from 0 linking domains) Note to all: the links to the PR WEB release for the HP included a low end directory type link and a link from PR WEB (. For Golfer's Advice there was not a link back to the release from PR WEB: Note that Golfer's Advice is a newer release (6 weeks).

So, any link from HPWhite release would equal more juice to HP White and PR Web and Vocus.

Any link to Golfer's Advice from release offers......???? to Golfer's Advice and who cares to Vocus and PR Web.

So, I guess this begs a couple of questions:

Why the mozbar link analysis difference for one versus the other?

Does PR Web treat some differently than others?

Who benefits most from me paying a PR Web to do press releases for a client, PR Web and Vocus or my client and I????

Well laid out as usual Simon. Question,

From your response: Having a hyphen/dash in the domain name can cause confusion and memory issues for some, usually without it reads just fine in search results.

From my response: ..._One-Two.com as it is more readable to the searcher or client. _

I found in WMT that hyphen in domain has no bearing on SEO, but after your response I started looking for anything to support you or me. I remember there was a response a while back from someone on Q&A where they put in some non-hyphen domains that when you first read them you actually read them wrong (spelling read exactly for two different names). I could not find that response again (though it too was an educated opinion only).

So, it appears there are two schools of thought. It would be nice to find anyone who had seriously looked at this and found it to be one way or the other. There were a few blogs on the subject claiming to have tested it...and they were split 50/50.

We need to team up with someone strong in test validation and really test it. I am fine with either, would just like to be able to say yes/no with more confidence.

Thanks for the response Doug. Is there anyplace you have found as a resource that supports this above the fold delineation? I am with you in that it seems reasonable (but I grew up with newspapers ;)) My thoughts are that with the algorithm there would need to be some mechanism to measure that bottom of header - top of footer area [maybe character or word count] and then to calculate that and apply a factor to the content that is weighted higher than a similar factor for the second half. 
It would certainly be easier to game if we new bottom of header to beginning of H2 is 'top of fold' and when there was no H1 or H2, etc. there would be full credit given to page in total. (Then, again, we are at the measure by equation versus placement).

As to the slider, If I am doing a professional practice or a product producer, etc. I try to stay away. With companies that sell a service or product that "look" is a big appeal, it really is helpful. We use a lot of CMS (WordPress, Joomla, Drupal) and test a lot of sliders. Typically,  by the time a plug in slider makes it near the top of the heap, it has been fairly well tested. Slider issues today typically revolve around browser updates and we have standards in place regarding updates due to the impact a failure can have on a client.

We only update after there has been time for the update to be in the marketplace (truly varies so we break it down by type of update). If it is a browser we might well wait 4 to 6 months to see what bugs get worked out. We then test all on the site once updated so the problem is not a surprise. But, again, I rarely see problems with them.

In looking just at the home page, and looking at the Site Grader results, I would say wrong is not really the best choice. You are doing it less than best for that term. Remember first that it cannot be looked at in a vacuum. I have sites that have pages that grade out less than perfect: eg. a title tag that is purposefully too long, etc. You are better served to ask yourself who your customer is and what are they looking for and then construct the page to deliver that and modify your on page around that.

Another thing I would suggest is that you check keyword queries (kw analysis) around your products. Having board game essentially on every page over and over will not help you. But, If you segment it, there may be gold in there and it may prevent the site from looking too spammy. An example I found when querying for about 5 gamer type keywords was this:                        local UK broad  local UK exact

Board games  301,000 18,100

Family games   74,000    1,900

Family board games      2,900      500

To me, I believe you should have a page on with family games as the key word (You actually have that as a category but then the title tag is Family Board Games). You should have a meta description that speaks to: Looking for fun games for the family...the board gamers has ....  In making sure you tell them it is a board game site, you let them know in case they were looking for something different.

Talk about family games on that page and make sure you do things like a correct H1, etc.

Then, make sure you submit your site to Bing and Yahoo as you are showing only one page in Bing and none in Yahoo.

So, stop focusing on one key word. For the home page, I do not think you have gone totally overboard (Do take out the key words tag), and if you make the categories be that and find out what people query you will help yourself.
One last thing, on one of the pages you say you are now the largest after starting out in Feb. You did not show up on page one, so you may want to modify that statement.

I was just inspecting a wire frame that is going out to a client and realized that the slider may interfere with the "content above the fold." Can't believe this had not struck me on others.

If the Header has basic business info, etc. in it and you place a slider to display images in the area just beneath the Header or slightly down from it, does that decrease the amount of content seen a being above the fold? Or, is content above the fold established by virtue of H1,2, 3, etc.?

Have you resubmitted sitemap, etc.?

The title to the question is around the page being indexed: I did a Site:www.betxpert.com/bookmakere/betsafe on Google and the page is indexed. I have added a screenshot below.

If you look at the fifth item it is the actual URL you supplied so the site is indexed in Google and is showing up in the SERPs. Click on it and you land on your page. The issue could be that betsafe is a likely keyword term that is searched on (Have you checked the competition for the term given that betsafe is a site?)

Based on what has happened from time to time on our sites, my guess will be that it is caused by a widget or plug in on your CMS in some way interacting with the Bot. You are likely being crawled on these urls by Google (and producing 404's) as well and it is not likely it is just Roger bot picking it up. There is a lot on the GWMT forums regarding this with a myriad of suggested fixes: mod rewrite, http 410 for 404, etc.

One fix used by many is if your site has relative links you can do full out urls. If you have a ton of pages this might be a bit more of a pain. (Our clients typically have smaller sites so not too much of a problem).

If you are using WordPress (or another CMS that can utilize Extra Options Plug In) it is stated in the forums that the 404's can be stopped by:

Make meta descriptions from excerpts

I think if you take both Brandon and Joshua you will likely have your answer. Brandon went where I went when I first saw the question. Are you giving the searcher the info they are looking for in a way that makes them want to keep reading? When I read Joshua's response I had to say he, too, was correct. 
There have been many times when I kept telling myself how we were beating a competitor and caused myself to miss the flaws in our site. So, Forget who is first and whether or not they are dating Larry Page, focus on getting your page to perfect or flawless. Even if the page is about Chinese Gambling Sex Herbs, put in an info graph and list the top three myths about Gambling Sex Herbs. Then make sure you have spot on Title Tags, H1-H2, alt text, great linking program, quality backlinks, etc.
As to domain age, there is the place where that will have an effect...for a very short time frame. If a new domain comes out with great content, gets lots of traffic, social, and back links, domain age will not over weigh the other factors for ranking.

I would personally choose One-Two.com as it is more readable to the searcher or client. According to Google the hyphen is simply a word separator and has no effect on ranking. There are certainly sites that are helped by having it. As to .org, since there is already a massive bastardization (in that not all .orgs are non commercial as was the original intent) I don't think it adds anything.

Instead of going into a lot on Places, I will tell you what I see and what I think would turn the tables for you. First, If you want to rank for Kitchen Remodeling in Butler, you need to do a few things. As it stands, any of the dots around you can pass you. 
First, your on site SEO has to be spot on. You have Internal links from your menu only. You need internal links just like you need external. So they have a lot of internal because they have a much larger site. Look at the mega menus and the options they have. Keep working on getting back links.
On your on page, you have room in the Title tag to add Butler or even Butler, NJ and I would. With the H1, you have Kitchen Remodeling and I would add at Butler again. For the H2 I would change it to something around your keyword like: Best Time of Year to Remodel your Kitchen, etc. Then, look at your content and see if you can be more informative as opposed to flowery. (Kitchen Remodeling One Step at a Time, then list), etc. Now, here is a pet peeve of mine: You have no map on the site at all. I would have one on every page (Certainly on the Contact page).

Now, you have three reviews on the Places page and they are at best very low value: They were all put on within one month and there have been none since. Trust me, it matters. I would certainly be talking with customers and getting them to supply a review. Also, is the site listed in Yahoo Local, Bing Business Portal (no), etc. BTW, when you search the same in Bing and then click on images it serves up about 50; of these roughly a third are the competitor. It matters. You need to have them on Yelp, citysearch, etc. At least 5 to 8 other than the engines.

Are your images GeoTagged?  Now on Places you have to take a Google Category first, then the others can be your choice. If there is a category around remodeling as opposed to construction, I would choose it as the first. On the others, I would make sure that if the preponderance of the business is remodeling the categories are too: kitchen re, Bathroom re, Closet re, etc. I would put construction last as it is over-broad.

I think you should worry less about what the competitor is doing (I have to tell myself that every day) and make sure that you have their site so tight for local that no one else ever gets to the top. You can certainly pass the competitor with just a small amount of work...did I mention a google map???

We have worked with a firm that sells "outdoor" sporting equipment for hunting, fishing, etc. They sell ammunition, etc. We have never seen a situation where "firearms, guns and ammunition" were flagged or in any other way redined by Google. 
That is Adwords or SEO.

As usual you make some good points; I think the divide is between handling one or two sites and handling 100. With clients, unfortunately, most have budgets based on their business size and economic ability. Due to that they cannot spend at a level that will provide for the highest quality content. (Written by subject matter experts). Along with that, most are so busy running their own businesses/practices that they do not have the time write their own.

So, we do it for a fee, and we have to meet a budget and we still have to do quality content. Our checkoff is the client. They are the ones who have to tell us that we have gotten their subject correct; we insure the SEO is spot on.

To tell even a large profitable law firm that content for a medical law site is going to be $500 to $1000 per page is a non starter. But when you get the rare one that understands content is King - and have egos to match - and that is when it is really fun.

There are several ways to find content writers or copy writers. First and foremost, I would suggest you understand that when hiring for something like copy writing, if you are going to get someone who is accomplished, you are going to pay a high rate. (There may be an exception, but I believe it would be rare.) There are several SEO blogs that mention hiring writers and as soon as i find one of the more recent I will post to this question.

We hire our copy writers from colleges and universities. We place ads through the Student Career Services, etc. and wait for the responses. We get a lot of responses because we tell them what we are looking for and there is no pie in the sky. We ask that they email a resume and a sample of something they have written lately in a format we prefer. The beauty of this is that many who are lazy won't respond and those who do respond provide you with a first test by submitting their writing.

If the writing is poor in grammar, spelling (poor spelling in the age of spell check is a no hire), or structure, we just send a thanks for responding email. If the sample is good, we then send them a task of two paragraphs on something within the context of what we work on. We are very clear that we are not expecting them to be subject matter experts and we provide enough detail where they will understand it is a simple page we are wanting. If they pass that, we invite them in for an interview. This provides us with what I call Likely Hires.

Now, the work begins. Ours, not theres. We do not expect them to understand SEO, CMS's, etc. We have them come in for a day of training and then each week for two to four hours in the office. We teach them what they need to know to be good copy writers. We also set a schedule that they agree to and only require that they write at least one page a week. We continually offer guidance and encouragement. They actually love this kind of thing.

We pay $12 per hour in Houston to start. Once they are competent, we then pay them by the project with a full page of content on an average site (200 to 400 words) paid at between $25 and $50 based on how much research they will need to do. (A medical site might need more research than a site on recycled oil or about a given company). We have writers who want to work more and those whose classes or situation changes who scale back. We never complain as we told them that we understood they were in school and it would change. At the same time, we tell them if they learn as they go, there could be a position on graduation. We use a system where they send in there page or an email saying it was posted in a CMS, and tell us how much time they spent on it. This lets us know if they are pushing the hours up or not working efficiently. We can then intervene.

We provide financial incentive if they seek out a subject that will help the company and pass it (we pay for classes like, web dev subjects, Adobe Creative Suite subjects,  Excel, etc.). They have to complete the class and then provide a one page on what they learned and how they can help as the result of it.

The key is in understanding you must teach them. Not how to write, how to write for disparate subjects and for different clients. You cannot expect to hire someone who is skilled in blogging, smart enough to write a great blog, etc. to accept $25 for an article. (My opinion). But, you can teach someone and pay them fairly and let them see they are learning and are part of a cool team.

Without an example url, it is hard to properly diagnose the problem. One thing I had to get past when I was first using SEOmoz, was that often the errors were not really on urls that would be on the sitemap per se. With CMS like WP or Joomla, sometimes we will get errors around the plugins, themes, widgets, and apps. An example of one is:

ExampleSite.info/wp-content/themes/EarthlyTouch/js/idtabs.js

So, make sure you don't just look at the start of the url, but cut and paste it from the error report to be sure. If you know it is a page that is resolving correctly, I would suggest putting in a ticket for Support (click on help at top right of this page) or email help@SEOmoz.org.

From the point of view in the second paragraph, I agree as well. If it was all new content that could drive new customers or drive current customers to buy additionally, I would put it all up as well.

Certainly when it comes to a small component of the algorithm versus money today...show me the money.

I think the issue is what is the site about and knowing how the content helps. Not just putting quality content up in a vacuum. So, if the site is about custom writing, and there are 4000 pages of examples, I don't think adding an additional 1000 today will help in any appreciable way. If all the content is dissimilar and each page focuses on some different writing item: sports-football, baseball, basketball, etc. and medicine, etc. and you have no content showing that, I would put it all up as well.

I believe if the content is similar to what is on the site, adding it over time (not five years, but one) could have an interesting impact. Not sure if there is a measure currently.

So, issuing the same type challenge, I challenge anyone to prove putting up 1000 pages of content overnight, with no further description of it, will increase site performance appreciably.

Is an interesting question though.
