RE: Linking to each other: when companies merge
No it will not. Normally, Google wouldn't penalize if this is just a one time thing and you are not known for linking back and forth to one another or in any way associated with networks that do these type of links.
Also sites that are under one host or same IP will not give Google any reason to penalize you because many domains have the same IP (vast majority of sites are on shared hosting any way).
So you are safe to go and shouldn't worry about that. In the end it will just be AC Company < > new Plumbing Company Inc.

RE: Could Retail Price Be A Google Ranking Factor???
I'd be curious as well if anyone has seen any correlation between prices and rankings. I'd believe there would be no reason Google to rank an authoritative site lower just because a semi-authoritative site has a better price. Example would probably be Amazon and eBay, vice versa. The site's general authority would probably matter most and pricing would be a miniscule factor.
-
RE: Adding another domain to my VPS, would it effect SEO?
No there is no SEO issues with adding another domain to the same IP.
A lot of shared hosting is hosted on one server from 1 domain to thousands domain. It will not effect SEO at all.

RE: Contact Form On Homepage - Best Practices
Not 100% important pertaining to the Contact Form.
BUT, I forgot where I read this statistic but customers are more highly subjected to inquire more of a business, if there are some trust signals. Signals like SSL certificates, payment acceptance and yes, contact information.
Contact forms are not fully needed, but doesn't hurt if it is purely service based like SEO consulting. But you should 100% put your business address, phone number, and email on the front page, probably on the sidebar or header.

RE: Robots.txt query
That blocks all spiders from viewing those pages. I am not sure what and who did the /* /_/, but unless there is something there they don't want indexed then it is not necessary to keep it.
One thing you mind want to keep in mind as well, just because you block it on robots txt, doesn't mean a spider can't still go there.
Sometimes they don't listen to the robots txt(looking at you baidu)

RE: Unnatural Link Warning - What to Do??
Massive drop..you really need to remove those links then.
Create the spreadsheet of all the links that are spam (this is most time consuming), then use one of the tools I mentioned or Donnie mentioned or others. And just maintain those campaigns by sending notices every week or two. This would help you take down as many as you can but of course you have to make the list of all of the spam links.
Make sure to keep these documents on a spreadsheet and then show Google, Google will take into good faith because they understand some webmasters aren't available or will not respond.

RE: Canonical Tag on All Pages
There isn't a major negative effect when using canonicals even when they are not needed. Some CMS use sitewide canonicals to easier tackle duplicate URLs. So if a base URL is using parameters, the CMS might have been setup to follow back to the canonical URL.
A quick example would be: view-source:http://www.expedia.com/

RE: 10yr old Domain, Conflicting Message from Webmaster tools/Google search
What is your site using?
Make sure to have the site always running on www. or non-www.
Also set the preferred domain within WMT, and select www or non-www.
If you need help selecting it, just do random searches of popular organic traffic and see what those links show up as on the SERP.
Once you have a conclusion of what Google SERP shows, select that type and make sure to arrange it within your .htaccess to keep it consistent.
www. and non-www. can cause problems with duplicate content and confusion with search engines.

RE: How to properly remove pages and a category from Google's index
It sounds like you want to de-index them.
Go into your robots.txt and disallow Google from the category..
It will look something like this:
User-agent: googlebot or *
Disallow: /web-design-news-all/

RE: Duplicate Content for our Advertising Sites Showing in Search Results
Sorry for the short response I was eating lunch. But now down to busnazzz.
Which site do you want the rank when you search? When you do a nofollow I believe the site is still indexed just not fully, meaning it won't grab the meta data.
But I searched both your adword and adcenter pages and they don't come up in my SERP.
When I google the organic site, it comes up with all the right links to your site.
So for now I don't see a problem, it might be your cookies/cache or logins. Use another browser. The only time i see the ...../oxygen is within the AdWords section.

RE: Unnatural Link Warning - What to Do??
Depends how was the site ranking before hand.
I was recently suggested by others to use LinkDelete.com and other sites like Rmoov.com can help remove some of these links. However, it can be almost futile with so many links. You have to look at how the site was ranking before and if removing the links will help you and the amount of resources that need to be used.
Best ways is to extract the links from OSE and GWT, and then use some tools like the above links and send out mass takedown notices. But 4000 is a lot!
Weigh out your options and resources and come to what would best benefit the site and company. If your online presences is vital, it might not be a good idea to start a new domain etc.

RE: Banner Ads help seo?
If the ad is being served through an ad server like Zedo, OpenX, they are not counted. If they are just image ads with a link, then that would be counted.
When using an ad server the links do not count in Google, and if anything they count for the server, not the redirect.
I don't think many will use image ads since they offer no way of tracking other than url tagging.

RE: My PR 4 website won't rank for keywords that have very weak competition
One of the thing that pops out to me is:
"I bought a real 1Yr old PR4 domain and used it to make a blog"
So was this just a domain and never had a blog before hand?
People have to realize PR is no longer a huge factor anymore. Its a measurement that can rarely be measured by anyone outside of Google.
How many actual quality links do you have to the site? There are millions of blogs and if you are in a competitive niche, it will be extremely hard to rank on the first few pages.
For more advice you should post domain and keywords you are referring to.

RE: Content Update
It will not have any real effect other than changing your on page SEO.
If the dates are changed, and content is updated with a good portion of information, the post may get ranked higher just because of freshness. Google loves fresh content and fresher content usually rank better but fall a little below later on.
What you may try is making a new post with a link referring to the old post. See if that works for you and if not you can always update the content on the original post...which is what I would do.
Keeping content updated with changes is a good way for your users/readers, not just for SEO
Good content and updated content can have others point back to your site, i.e. "hey check this page out, they update this information quite often!".

RE: What is wrong with my site?
It is not simple to get to page 1. Especially with some popular words like classroom and connection.
It also doesn't help you don't operate on a TLD. (.com, .net, .org). You also have very little links pointing to your domain. Your site is a bit disorganized and hard to look at.
Some things I would consider doing would be fixing up the site to look more professional and easy for users to view and see exactly what you are offering. My initial view of the landing page does not really tell me too much. You want the user to know what you are offering the minute they land on your page.
You should start building links from related niches that way you have some link juice and authority, that will most likely help you rank better than you currently are, it will also build your brand with more referral traffic from other sites.

RE: BOTW & Yahoo Directory
OSE sometimes take a while to show links.
But at the end of the day it is just a text on a screen.
Go to Google and search and see if your listing is found, if it is found, and the link the followed, you are getting juice from them...which is all that matters.
Usually takes 1-2 updates for them to show up but I've heard longer. I just don't think people should be too worried if it is not on OSE. It is usually just to gauge where you are.
-
RE: Potential Implications of using the Disavow tool to remove thousands of links
I didn't visit the rippling site but it is probably a site like updowner. Maybe you can exclude your site from their site by contacting them.
If not you can use the disavow tool on them if you are unable to get them removed.
The only rare consequence is maybe those links were helping you rank for those pages and disavowing can screw with your rankings. But that is really rare because I'm assuming those links don't even help.
-
RE: My PR 4 website won't rank for keywords that have very weak competition
My reply was a little after you posted this information.
So some general things, your domain is fresh and PR doesn't mean anything at this point. You have 0 links according to OSE and your keywords are highly competitive 'hedge fund trader x' has A LOT of exact match domains and subdomains. This might be the reason why you are not ranking.
If you originally thought they were weak competition due to PR 0, etc, than you were mislead. The competitive is strong with those EMD. Your site has only 1 post and is not using a TLD, so this all can be the reason those sites are outranking you.

RE: Should I use nofollow when interlinking large, networked sites?
First off, I would think to myself what is the reason we are linking them all to.
If the reason is good enough to cross link the sites together, I'd nofollow them.Sitewide links have been proven to be a bad option and if it is a must, I'd nofollow them.
-
RE: What is wrong with my site?
I'm sorry I guess the site is pretty straight forward if I read the text. I think maybe less colors and larger text of the exact offerings. I felt like I had to really engage the page to know what is being offered.
As the video, I think it helps, a lot of other sites have their own video player that shows the benefits of their service as well. I'd say keep it, and if you can make it larger.
IMO, the site looks like it was made in 1998. You should try using easy to implement CMS platforms like WordPress or Drupal.

RE: Bulk BackLink Chcecker
A good and reputable site would be:

RE: Product Review Permissions
I agree with Mike. Letting a customer know you are choosing their review to be posted on your site generally gives a good sentiment to the customer.
You benefit in both ways, creating a good relationship with your customer(more WOM referrals) and giving your site a legitimate review.
-
RE: My PR 4 website won't rank for keywords that have very weak competition
Google recently devalue and valued EMDs, depending on the content.
What you would need to do is focus more on connecting with your users. Always creating fresh and unique content can gather links and a following. This will always in return give you links and consistent traffic.
At this point I can point a few things you can fix immediately.
-Complete the website
-Remove 'admin' as author, give you site a name and face
-Decide what niche and what crowd you are trying to attract
-Learn and observe how other sites similar to your niche are successfulHope this gives you an idea of what to do. You can always read up on the SEOmoz blog, a lot of contributors provide great and insightful information.

RE: 301'ing domain to an addon domain
You can use .htaccess
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} \maindomain.com$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.addondomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]EDIT: This can also help you and give you more in depth and options to what you want to do.

RE: Does PRWeb.com Still Work?
Paying for press releases are somewhat not a viable option anymore. Many believe that using that budget to create an awesome content would be a better choice.
As well believe, good contents will lead to backlinks. The problem with PR sites is that they mass send these to news sites, and unless your content in your PR is good, it won't be picked up and you would have paid $100-$200 for just 1-2 links.
-
RE: Partial EMD
You are referring to PMD(partial) and EMD(exact). They are still ranking factors in these and although Google is not punishing these domains they are devaluing the ranking factor to these type of domains.
This is not necessarily going against PMD & EMD, its just means there are many other factors that come into play before PMD & EMD.
One thing you can refer to is: http://mozcast.com/metrics
There will be a chart for EMD and PMD to show you the change in rankings of EMD and PMDs.

That Wikipedia page Muslim_Academy needs links from other Wikipedia articles and vice versa. That is a simple explanation to how to get those notifications removed.

RE: Do you say Browser Title or Page Title?
Page Title is correct in all ways.
Browser Title is for the people that don't live/work in your industry.
Thats how I choose.

RE: Odd 404 Errors in WP That I cannot find the origin
Your post:
http://www.cio-tech.com/cios-oracle-optimization-results-roi-justification-save-20m-over-5-years/
First paragraph:
improvements… a technical companion Video is posted on www.SynSynAck.comshowing the case study packet trace explaining the technical analysis to find optimization opportunities
Now that hyperlink is anchored as www.SynSynAck.com, but the actual URL is
http://www.cio-tech.com/cios-oracle-optimization-results-roi-justification-save-20m-over-5-years/www.SynSynAck.com
Go back into the post, and edit the URL/Hyperlink to just www.synsynack.com
And that should do it.
-
RE: Partnerships web pages and optimization- dangers and solutions?
Yes it would be a bad idea.
If you must, just nofollow the links. The dangers are getting ALL the sites penalized and that just isn't cool to have it happen.
-
RE: Does this graph look like a Penguin 2.0 hit?
Finally got a chance to look at the Moz algorithm update and it seems Penguin 2.0 was just around that time. So it could be that you were affected by your backlinks and if you've disavowed them, the original value those links carried...no longer carry any weight.
-
RE: Wikipedia page need suggestions
No links to other Wikipedia articles mean you have to linked certain text on that URL to other Wikipedia pages.
Like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim_Academy has anchor text to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim
Orphan means vice versa, where let's say
FOR EXAMPLE:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim_Academy
Points to:

RE: Subdomains or subfolders for language specific sites?
Subfolder is the way to go.
The rationale is that subfolders will have links from all parts of the site including from the different language section. For subdomains your ranking might fluctuate between different languages.
Subdomains are not used very often except to differentiate a primary domains core business and purpose. If it is usually just language, a subfolder is what everyone normally uses.

RE: Old massive site, should I nofollow all out going links?
Majority of large name brands have nofollow on their sites mainly because its not manageable. Think about all these pages and posts they would have to filter and remove and say ok this should follow and this should nofollow.
They don't benefit from it, so they just nofollow all of it. However, I thin TP has a blog or top ten list sometimes, which then they would have a follow link.
This is the majority for most large sites/companies.

RE: Anyone Know Of A WP Plugin for Before and After Pictures
You can try these few.
In order of latest updated:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/before-after/
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/beforeafter-pictures/
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/beforeafter/screenshots/
But simple photoshop or even Paint can help you do a before and after, unless you are looking for some sort of special effects like onclick, but I think you can do that with regular coding like onhover or onclick.

RE: Lol - 3 pages of videos on SERPs
I had to do quadtriple takes on if I had the video tab selected. This is probably just an isolated problem that would be fixed soon.
Looks like Google might be messing with their video search criteria/algorithm. Funny that they are all YouTube links.

RE: Recent Google Link Scheme Updated ? What's Your Reaction against Link Building, Link Exchanging ?
I partially agree with this.
The company I work for gets featured in lots of authoritative sites like MSN, Yahoo, NYTimes and etc. The problem here is that we get natural optimized anchor text and a lot of the times there are content partnerships with these sites where the same article is republished on their network.
So now you have 5-10 authoritative sites using the same article and followed anchor text AND you have 100 other low quality syndication sites/scrappers using the same article. This is all natural and part of how the business works in online publication. So penalizing this type of natural anchor text will become a problem in general if Google doesn't find the right way to classify this.
In no way, shape, or form are we trying to spam our anchor text, everything is natural. So this sucks a bit.
I'd be interested in hearing what others have to say about this.
-
RE: If I get a natural link for a great site and I have my keyword with anchor text in this link, how should I proceed?
No worries. Excessive anchor text is punishable. Its just one.
-
RE: Are Blog Comments now useless?
Yes, blog spamming is not really a smart idea. Plus majority of blog platforms nofollow comment links.
The only way you will benefit from blog comments are if they actually help the reader and is more of a marketing tactic than SEO.
-
RE: Suggestions of some video CMS platforms?
Thanks, I've been looking for dedicated video sharing CMS for a test project. I know we can do it with just most CMS but would rather have something dedicated with features specifically for a video site.
-
RE: Keep Pages with Old Dates?
At times it could be best to just keep dates out of the URL but that is little signal to Google. You can always use structured data to signal to Google the page is new or updated.
Another thing you could do is do a 301 redirect from the old page to the new page, thus pushing all the link juice to the new URL.
-
RE: What should i do to get success with PPC only
PPC and SEO is different.
SEO is organic.
PPC is pay per click, which you're paying for.
PPC is effective in getting instant traffic and a direct line to your customers/users. You have to analyze which keywords are most effective and which convert the best. This takes time and adjustment, thus PPC management is very important to keep ROI high.
The SEOmoz blog has tons of useful blogs on PPC posted by members of SEOmoz community. Here are a few that you might be interested in.

RE: We registered with Yahoo Directory. Why won't this show up as a a linking root domain in our link analysis??

RE: Internal Links and Page Authority - Best Practices
Not really, the whole idea of the web is to pass the juice. It is like asking what if you link to SEOmoz or Google. Linking out to sites are natural and unless that site is spammy, I don't see how it can affect you that harshly.
Bottom line, it happens all the time and you shouldn't think about it too much. If Page B is offering something good for your users then it is 100% warranted anyway!

RE: Best Forum Platform from an SEO perspective
Hey Dan,
I have some experience with a few of these. Mainly phpBB and vBulletin. I think both are pretty well and it is really all about flexibility in modifying SEO needs, in which both can allow you to do easily.
I personally like vBulletin and their community, but it could be quite expensive and does hog up resources. phpBB is open source last time I used it (years ago), and it is great to build off of and there are plenty of successful sites running on phpBB.
Bottomline is your budget. If you have the budget go with vB, if you are just testing something..try phpBB. They are both pretty good.
-
RE: Google PPC - coupon balances
I have not used MCC, but from what I understand Google is pretty strict about coupon use and do not provide any loophole in using or transferring coupon credit in any way, this would just create a wide array of problems with their coupon system.

RE: Why would our server return a 301 status code when Googlebot visits from one IP, but a 200 from a different IP?
I would not be surprised if this was done by your DNS. If you use a DNS manager, they could possibly redirect certain users or IPs based on patterns of visits.
I suggest finding out more about any server configurations from the admin and seeing who they use as a DNS provider or manager.
