Using differing calls to action based on IP address
-
Hi,
We have an issue with a particular channel on a lead generation site where we have sales staff requiring different quality of leads in different parts of the country. In saturated markets they require a stricter lead qualification process than those in more challenging markets.
To combat the problem I am toying with the idea of severing very slightly different content based on IP address. The main change in content would be in terms of calls to action and lead qualification processes.
We would plan to have a "standard" version of the site for when IP location can not be detected. URLs on this version would be the rel="canonical" for the location specific pages.
Is there a way to do this without creating duplicate content, cloaking or other such issues on the site?
Any advice, theories or case studies would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gareth,
Thanks for the Googlebot info. Still concerned with cloaking content but will look into it in more detail.
Thanks again

Why don't you just block the other pages, so you only have your standard canonical page being indexed? You can then cloak the content by IP, but remember Googlebot always crawls from the US so make sure it is seeing the standard version.

Hi Highland,
Thanks for responding. The offering is the same in each location it's just the way we process the leads differs. For example, in Los Angeles / London we get lots of leads - almost too many for the regional sales staff to handle so they try to pre-qualify the leads. In the mid-west / Scotland the sales staff have to nurture the leads so are happy with a phone number.
For another stream on the site we are targeting local segments but this particular element has a national approach.
Thanks for your input.

I would create your content with distinct URLs and canonical to the generic if you feel it is too duplicate.
Example, make the following URLs and use a redirect with your geolocation
domain.com/houston
domain.com/los-angeles
domain.com/midwest
domain.comIf I were you, I would make all of these distinct pages with unique content rather than making them canonical. This way you can optimize lots of local searches in addition to the general ones. Canonical is more for people who already have duplicate content. It sounds like you want to make new content. Played right, you could go after lots of local traffic that might be untapped.

What is this SERP feature called? Organic ads...?
What are these called (screenshot attached)? They are organic product listings in the body of the SERP that look just like paid ads, but are placed below paid ads. I would like to read up on how to optimize for them, but am having trouble finding information.Capture.PNG

Redirect By IP location
Hi All, I have a client who operates in multiple countries with the sub directory structure. In AU for their main brand name .com site still ranks in the first position but /au ranks for most of the other terms. Current we have a 301 redirect in place for .com for anyone accessing the site from AU to /au. This is only for home pages as other .com pages don't rank in Australia. Just wondering what implication this can have on our SEO campaign. Cheers

Is it good practice to use hreflang on pages that have canonicals?
I have a page in English that has both English & Spanish translations on it. It is pulled in from a page generated on another site and I am not able to adjust the CSS to display only one language. Until I can fix this, I have made the English page the canonical for both. Do I still want to use hreflang for English & Spanish pages? What if I do not have a Spanish page at all. I assume (from what I've read) I should not have an hreflang on the English page. Is this correct? Thank you in advance.

IP Redirect causing Indexing Issue
Hi, I am trying to redirect any IP from outside India that comes to Store site (https://store.nirogam.com/) to Global Store site (https://global.nirogam.com/) using this methodThis is causing various indexing issues for Store site as Googlebot from US also gets redirected!- Very few pages for "store.nirogam.com/products/" are being indexed. Even after submission of sitemap it indexed ~50 pages and then went back to 1 page etc. Only ~20 pages indexed for now.- After this I tried manually indexing via "Crawl -> Fetch as Google" - but then it showed me a redirect to global.nirogam.com. All have their "status -> Redirected" - This is why bots are not able to index the site. What are possible solutions for this? How can we tell bots to index these pages and not get redirected? Will a popup method where we ask user if they are outside India help in solving this issue? All approaches/suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Install Wordpress on different folders on the same URL
Howdy Mozers! It's a long story, but I have Wordpress installed on my root domain "example.com" and in "example.com/folder" as well. Will this affect my SEO? Should I delete WP from my folder, and build my pages from a folder on the root domain, like "example.com/folder1"? Hope I've managed to properly explain myself 🙂 Thanks!

Using the same domain for two websites (for different geographical locations)
Hi all, My client has a new E-commerce site coming out in few months.
Technical SEO | | skifr
His requirement is to use the same domain (lets call it www.domain.com for now) for two seperate websites:
The first site, for users with ip addresses from USA - which will include prices in US dollars.
The second site - for users outside of the US - will not include any prices, and will have different pages and design. Now, lets say that googlebot crawls the websites from different ip ranges. How can i make sure a user from France, for example, won't see crawled pages from the US? Sure, once he will click the result, I can redirect him to a "Sorry, but this content is unavailable in your country" page. The problem is, I don't want a user from France to see the in the search results the meta description snippets of pages related only to users in the US (in some cases, the snippets may include the prices in $).
Is Geotargeting through Webmaster Tools can help in this case? I know I can target a part of the website for a specific country (e.g. - www.domain.com/us/), but how can I make sure global users won't see the pages targeted only to the US in the search results? Thanks in Advance0 -
Website content has been scraped - recommended action
So whilst searching for link opportunities, I found a website that has scraped content from one of our websites. The website looks pretty low quality and doesn't link back. What would be the recommended course of action? Email them and ask for a link back. I've got a feeling this might not be the best idea. The website does not have much authority (yet) and a link might look a bit dodgy considering the duplicate content Ask them to remove the content. It is duplicate content and could hurt our website. Do nothing. I don't think our website will get penalised for it since it was here first and is in the better quality website. Possibly report them to google for scraping? What do you guys think?
