Tracking Email campaign
-
I generated the following URL to track visits from newsletter.
http://www.example.com/ ?utm_source=newsletter1&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newletter2109
Do i have to use this link in our email ?
My question is it looks ugly. How do i shorten this ? Using bit.ly ?
But isn't it true that URL shortening services such as bitly, as some can increase the likelihood of email being marked as spam

Might you also consider that with emails, unlike webpages, you can use terms like 'click here' or images to get the user to click through or carry out an action.
Buttons and images have certainly seen a better CTR than plain text links in our email campaigns.

Shall i upload the .htaccess file after redirect ?
-
Yes, its s standard 301 redirect. You can replace "/newsletter2109/" with whatever you want, and that's the href you include in the email.
If you have not used the .htaccess for anything yet, be sure to put RewriteEngine On at the top of the file.

Thanks Dan. Is the following code goes into .htacess file exactly like mentioned by you ? Redirect 301 /newsletter2109/ http://www.example.com/ ?utm_source=newsletter1&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newletter2109

I believe you have two options in this case.
1. Like Daniel said, only the href is going to look long and ugly, you can keep the anchor text nice and clean.
2. But if you still want to make the href its self look nicer, just set up a 301, like
Redirect 301 /newsletter2109/ http://www.example.com/ ?utm_source=newsletter1&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newletter2109
Users will see the link as http://www.example.com/newsletter2109/ but the 301 redirect will send the appropriate info into analytics.

There is a difference between the links target and it's title, you could set it like this [http://www.example.com](http://www.example.com/ ?utm_source=newsletter1&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newletter2109) so that it keeps the tracking but looks pretty to the user.
As far as URL shortening services go, I don't think that it raises the chances of it being marked as spam, but I would imagine there being less 'trust' from many users when it comes to clicking a shortened URL.
Personally I'd keep the URL shortening services away from any email campaigns/newsletters and use them for Twitter and the like

Cross Domain Tracking in GA (without cross domain links)
Hi everyone, Been doing some research about cross-domain tracking in Google Analytics (preferably Universal Analytics where documentation is a bit spare). All of the tutorials focus on the auto-linking and ensuring links to the other site are taken care of. I'm considering a site that may not cross-link like that at all (or it may, but won't be the main avenue). A good example is: www.gap.com
Reporting & Analytics | | ketanmv
www.bananarepublic.com
www.oldnavy.com Now, they do link to the other brands in their navigation but let's pretend that they don't necessarily do that. Gap Corporate may want to roll up all these domains into a single reporting profile because customers can clearly visit any of those sites on their own and buy. It would be nice to know that Visitor X bought 2 items from gap.com and 3 from oldnavy.com... and of course, here were their campaigns, etc. From what I am reading, I am not sure this is really possible. It seems that the cross-domain code is really only best for when my main site links to another domain for checkout or something. But in my example, we are definitely not in control of that kind of behavior. Thoughts? Perhaps I need to recommend they go with subdomains only which Universal GA seems to handle quite fine out of the box. Thank you!0 -

GA: Want to have a profile tracking only 3 out of 4 subdomains only?
Hi Mozzers, I would like to track 3 out of 4 subdomains in a profile on GA. I have 4 subdomains: www.example.com m.example.com subdomain1.example.com subdomain2.example.com I would like to create a profile with only the first 3 subdomains without subdomain2.example.com. Can someone tell me what to do to get this? I also have a profile called combined profile that includes all of them with this filter(attached). Can I add another filter to this profile? if it is the case what should I add and how? if not, creating another profile would be the only other way, right? if it is the case how can I filter it to get Thanks a lot! u4HxY06

How to track subfolders in GA?
Is it possible to get the visitor statistics for a subfolder (example.com/blog/) in Google Analytics? I already have GA tracking set-up like normal, and visitors do get logged, but to see data only for /blog/ I have to go to Content > Site Content > All pages and search for "/blog/". Should I create a new profile in Google Analytics? Or is there a better way to only see stats for a subfolder?

Cross domain tracking setup in Google Analytics
I really need help on this, I can't figure it out. I need to track a few subdomains and and couple of seperate domains in one profile in Google Analytics. So I have: www.maindomain.co.uk sub1.maindomain.co.uk sub2.maindomain.co.uk www.anotherdomain.co.uk So the code I have placed on all of these domains is as following: I have then set up seperate profiles which filter out the data by domain. E.g. for sub1.maindomain.co.uk, I have user the fitler: Custom filter > Include > Filter Field = Hostname > Filter Pattern = sub1.maindomain.co.uk For the www.anotherdomain.co.uk, I have used the same filter. Now this all seems to be tracking visits and unique visitors okay, but I always have a very low pageview count, less than visits and sometimes zero. Could anyone shed any light on what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance mozzers.
