What is the best approach to a keyword that has multiple abbreviations?
-
I have a site for which the primary keyword has multiple abbreviations.
The site is for the computer game "Football Manager", each iteration is often referred to as FM2012, FM12 or Football Manager 2012, the first two can also be used with or without spaces inbetween.
While this is only 3 keywords to target, it means that every key phrase such as "FM2012 Tactics", must also be targeted in 3 ways.
Is there a recommended approach to make sure that all 3 are targeted?
At present I use the full title "Football Manager" in the the title and try to use the shorter abbreviations in the page, I also make sure the title tags always have an alternative e.g
Two specific questions as well as general tips:
-
Does the <abbr>HTML tag help very much?</abbr>
-
Are results likely to differ much for searches for "FM 2012" and "FM2012" i.e. without the space.

Personally I would make the root domain a catch-all for every term. You don't need separate pages for each phrase you want to rank for. If the entire website is about the same thing, there's no need to create landing pages for different phrases. (Google also frowns upon this)
I would limit the usage of the <abbr>tag to once or twice per abbreviation. You also must realize this is onpage SEO, which is great and it does help, but the majority of your ability to rank for your phrases will come from external SEO.</abbr>

Thanks for the response.
Would using the abbr tag every single time the abbreviated term is used be considered over the top and effectively detrimental?
Also often my pages are focused on the full phrase e.g. domain.com/football-manager-tactics.html with the full phrase in the title as well.
Would it be dangerous (spammy?) to create a separate page called domain.com/fm-tactics.html purely to help pull in results for this search term?

If you take a look at the Adwords Keyword Tool, you can see some phrases get more traffic than others:
- Football Manager 2012 - 27,100 exact searches per month
- fm 2012 - 8,100 exact searches
- fm2012 - 1,900 exact searches
My advice would be to continue with alternating anchor and title tags, but give more preference to phrases that get the most searches. Be sure to include all phrases in the copy of the page as well, but pay mind that the page doesn't look spammy.
Adwords Keyword Tool: <cite>https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal</cite>
Using the <abbr>tag will help. Again, don't overdo it. You will need to take time to think how you can fit all the acronyms in the content body without making it appear like you intentionally did so.</abbr>
Proper usage: <abbr title="Football Manager 2012">fm2012</abbr>

How to rank for a keyword
Hi guys, I'm looking to rank a new blog for a search term which we currently already rank #1 for. I want to create a blog which provides a better solution to a searchers query and knock our current #1 page for this new one. Is there a way to do this simply without losing the real-estate the currently ranked #1 page has already accumulated? Or is just a matter of working on this new blog to find it's own way to the top? Thanks in advance, James

The idea is to add a "shop" button in the menu to redirect clients in this shop. I would like your opinion about how should I construct this shop, what do you think is the best for SEO : "www.website.com/shop" or "shop.website.com" thank you in advance for your answers !

Can bots identify shmushed keywords?
I remember reading some years ago that domains and pages that have smushed keywords, such as cheapbaseballs.com/redbaseball.html could be identified by Google as "cheap baseballs" and "red base ball". Is this still correct?

Interlinking multiple websites
Most websites (for example) Zalando intern link there other CC tld domains to the root. For example: On http://www.zalando.nl/damesschoenen-pumps/ the links in the footer go to the other CC tld's: http://www.zalando.es , zalando.co.uk etc. Does anyone have experience with the fact if you would interlink to the relevant page on the other CC tld;s.

For example: http://www.zalando.nl/damesschoenen-pumps/ links to http://www.zalando.co.uk/womens-shoes-heels/ in stead of linking to the homepage ?
In theory this would give more relevance intern linking. Looking forward to hear if anyone tried or experienced this and what the results where?0 -
Google’s Hummingbird and Keyword Cannibalization
My client wants to have keywords added on every product with the product name , apparently some seo guru told him that hummingbird is all about key phrases and long tail keywords. As i know hummingbird lends to understand the intent and contextual meaning of the query. The issue is if I add the keywords on for e.g oak furniture on all of my product title,And we are using zen-cart platform and it will change the internal anchor text on the product listing page. It will cause a Cannibalization issue. Question1. I just need help to reply to client that adding keyword can cause detrimental to ranking. Question 2. If i am wrong then do we need to re optimise the site. I have read http://moz.com/blog/how-to-solve-keyword-cannibalization Many thanks.

Small buisiness multiple cities
Say i have a website for a small business...but that business is expanding into neighboring areas. I still want to have it SEO optimized for keywords in the neighboring towns but I do not want to have to redo the whole website. Is there a way to do this without having google penalyze me for having duplicate content? I mean i know i can create a landing page www.mysite/newtown but whos to say the reader wont click the logo and go to the home page and gets navigated to www.mysite.com and get confused because its not the same info or its talking about the original town the business started. I hope this makes sense...thanks for the help! I see that craigslist uses the city.craigslist.com so im wondering if this is the answer??
