Which domain to use for SE business listings?
-
For a first time, new website. I have a Barber shop in Hartford named "Dixie Cutters" with two domains, dixiecutters.com and barberhartford.com. Obviously the latter domain has two main keywords, barber and location...Hartford. So it would be better to use that and use a 301 redirect for dixiecutters.com to redirect to barberhartford.com.
Many online directories including SE listings on Google Places, BIng and Yahoo have already been set up withe domain "dixiecutters.com" and the email address info@dixiecutters.com.
If I choose to make barberhartford.com the primary domain with dixiecutters.com 301 redirecting to it....does this mean that I should then change the directory listings and more specifically, the SE business listings so that they have the primary domain listed (barbarhartford.com) with an email address like...info@barberhartford.com? Or can I leave all of this alone and keep as stated above without any SEO local consequences.
I know consistency is a big issue with NAP. I also know it's recommended to use an email address with your domain name in the SE business listings. If a 301 is in place, can I use dixiecutters.com in my listings?
-
If this is a real business with real long term plans I would use the branded domain name. This feels more professional and as a business owner I would rather be identified with my company name on the internet rather than city+service.com.
On the other hand you can use the keyword domain to have two listings on Google. Question is, are you will doing to put in the time!!!
-
Good stuff, you give a compelling argument. Right now there is no site up just a few months of Google Places, Bing and Yahoo. I am supposed to make the decision this weekend now I am confused about what to do.
Brand and consistency make a lot of sense and "WTF is that" sorta hits that home thanks for your help.

Yelp is an authoritative domain and that enables it to defeat lots of small local sites who might be more relevant but not as authoritative.
However, I believe that if you can get a local listing in google, have some links from local business associations, local directories, chamber of commerce, your landlord, local service clubs, local tourism association..... some facebook action from people in your community... then I think that you have a chance to rank above them.
You might have a slightly better chance using a keyword domain, however if you already have an existing site with any history at all I would put all of my energy into that site.
These local SERPs usually are not so competitive - even if yelp is in there.
If it takes just a little longer to get a nonkeyword domain to better position then you have the strength of your brand working for you.
Lots of people do not think this way... they simply look for the easiest and fastest route to good rankings. They might be better off in the long-run to spend a small amount longer and use the power of their brand and their position in the SERPs.
You want people to know who you are and not ask WTF is that?
-
A very interesting take you have, thank you for that perspective. Do you think that there would be a better chance of outranking yelp for their generic page titled,"Auto Repair+City" using a keyword domain?
-
Most of my sites are keyword domains. They used to be very powerful in the SERPs. Now they still have a slight advantage but not an overwhelming advantage.
For a retail site, in my opinion, a keyword domain such as binoculars.com can have a very high conversion rate because visitors think that you are "the place" to by that category of product. However, if I owned a brick and mortar business I would use the name of my biz and not a keyword domain.
-
Thanks for your response. Not that is should make a difference in your response. The scenario above is fictitious and I should have stated that. The actual situation involves a website that is about to go up with two newly purchased domains. One is the brand name and the other is autorepair+city.com
The title tag and meta description are what people will see in the SERPS.. Don't you think that the url will be insignificant to those that are actually searching for the business name? Isn't a exact match domain like that desirable? Especially when trying to compete with sites like Yelp that may have a low page authority for that a particular term but a really high domain authority.
-
I would place all of my efforts into dixiecutters.com and do nothing with barberhartford.com other than just hold it to keep competitors from using it.
This should not be an extremely competitive niche and if you focus all of your effort on one site you should be able to rank well.
If the name of your shop is dixiecutters and people drive by and see that on your sign, see that on your newspaper ads, talk to their friends about who is their barber.... Then when they search and see dixiecutters in the SERPs then will know who you are....
If they see barberhartford in the SERPs they will wonder who the heck is that?
Diluting your own brand - especially in a small market is not usually a good way to get the word out about your business.
-
If you are going to make barberhartford your domain then yes, by all means 301 the old site, page by page to the new - in other words, do not simply redirect each page to the home page ... once that is done most of the link juice will pass to the barrberhartford domain, but the wise move is to have the old links changed, wherever possible, to the new domain.
The email address is not important SEOwise, and I don't know what NAP means, but I strongly believe it is very important for branding to use your domain name. However, I also feel that it's fine to use a name such as DixieCutters as the 'print' and promotional domain name; whatever people will best remember.

Local SEO Question: Domain Wide Vs Specific Page
Hey Moz Community, Question about Local SEO authority and how it applies to a domain vs. landing page. Let me elaborate... Company is launching a new local out reach sales channel and merging it with our inbound sales channel under one brand. The plan thus far is to create a targeted landing page for local customers/leads. I have been tasked with creating the written content and making sure we are optimized as much as possible for this landing page to show up for our city. Funny enough for a lot of relevant terms we are already in the top 10 with little optimization (Also due to low competition for most of these terms) Two questions: 1. Should the whole site be optimized for local - appropriate schema markup, G+ business local set up, contact page with correct address formatting, building citations/local links etc.? To accompany our targeted page? 2. Will taking a local first initiative hurt reaching our non-local target market? If so will a very targeted landing page for local customers do the trick minus rest of local optimizations ? I guess what the question really boils down to is will optimizing for local hurt our broader inbound search reach/ranks in the long run? I want to be sure we are competitive to our broader audience and local audience on the same site with trying to get into sub-domains or considering re branding what is essentially the same department but for local purposes. Responses and sharing previous experience would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Google+ Local Assistance (Listings being reviewed)
Hey guys, My client is having issues with his Google+ pages and I'm wondering if someone can shine some light on the issue for me... Basically the client has two businesses, both using the same residential address. The page was ranking well until a week ago, when it disappeared from search results and was listed in the dashboard as "Under Review." I've heard horror stories about this -- examples of Google taking months to review pages and make a decision, and I'm wondering if if might be better to just delete the under review pages and start over (hiding the address on the new listing to comply). Edward

Can this make one's local listing vanish from Google local search?
Hi All, Does anyone know if selecting "Yes, this business serves customers at their locations" under "service areas and location settings" in Google Places can cause a business's listing to disappear from Google local search? My interior designer client has a bricks-and-mortar location, was ranking at about #20 for "interior designer" in Portland, and now has dropped from local search. I had "No, all customers come to the business location" selected previously. In the past week, before the vanishing, I made these changes: 1. changed the service area to "Yes, this business serves customers at their locations", 2. removed "Portland" from the description in Google Places, and 3. submitted maybe two dozen directory listings to high DA sites (using Whitespark as the tool for determining where to post). Thanks everyone! Zack

Thinking about using a Public Relations firm to post articles
How much value is there in links from articles sent to places like Yahoo and Topix. Various news sources. I have about 20 related topics we can publish articles on in order to try and get some higher rankings from a few key word phrases. Is 4 a month okay? Would 1 a day be okay. Just looking to help to compete with the big guys in my industry. Any past experience or advice is appreciated. Boo

Australian Service that Allows you to Control all your Local Listings
Hey, After a few stumbles upon a variety of services that allows you to manage all your local listings from the one profile (the latest one was Yext.com). It got me thinking - is there an Australian equivalent? My research revealed nothing. Thanks.

How many local citations directory listings are recommended to obtain a month?
Hi, I am interested to hear what others recommend for the amount of local references & citations to obtain a month. For example, have you found it is better to get listed in SEOMoz's top 50 Local Business Citation Directories over a 30 day period, or is it the same if you registered on all of them in 1-2 days. What about larger numbers, registering on 100 national local citation websites, 50 industry related websites, and 15 city related sites. Have you found any large negative ranking effects on registering on all of them for your clients in say a 10-20 period rather than stretching out the registration process over say 3 months.. Jeff

Google Places Name Change - Duplicate Listings.
Need input on a Google Places change to avoid duplicate listing/phone number issue for a name change. Here is a summary: Company A has a Places listing and ranks week for key local terms. Company A has become a franchise and has a completely new name but same address. A New Franchise listing was created. It has same location but a different telephone (tracking) number. Both listings generally appear in Google Places but Company A (older listing) come up first. For branding purposes I would ideally like to eliminate (or edit) Company A listing and optimize new Franchise listing. We will need to eliminate the tracking phone number and add the old “Company A” phone number to the new Franchise listing. What is the best procedure to delete the Company A listing? I have access to both listings. Do I: -Strip Company A listing of most info…wait and then delete? Do I delete from my account or delete in total? -Just change the name of the “old” Company name to the new franchise name and delete the new franchise listing? An if so, in what order? -or do I just delete the old listing right away and edit the new franchise listing right away? -When do I add the old (and real phone number) to the new franchise listing? This same scenario has played out in other locations with disastrous results. Appears that Google looks at them as duplicate listings if the old Company name is still active and demotes both listings. Trying to avoid that problem that has been created by other companies. -Would adding Google Boost to the surviving listing help? Any input appreciated.

One business location and several local business listings
Hi, I'm working for an apartment rental agency. The agency is based in one country/city and naturally the Google Places listing is shown when people search "apartments + location", but what to do when we expand abroad? Naturally we want to have a Local Business listing for "apartments + location 2" as well. Is it sufficient to have a "local office"? I see competitors have urls: www.domain/paris and www.domain/london that are listed in local search when searching " apartments + paris" and "apartments + london". Basically, the same site, different locations. I'm wondering if the solution is that simple?
