Ways to research/brainstorm keywords for a unique non-profit?
-
We're looking for ways to drive traffic to our site through targeted keywords, but because our non-profit is unique (micro-loans for students in developing countries) it is unlikely that people will be using such a keyword.
We're looking for other keywords to target searchers who might be interested in giving micro-loans for students or at least are interested in microfinance in general. Eventually we do want to win for keywords like "microfinance" but these are a little competitive for us right now.
Any suggestions/ideas?
NOTE: We're running a blogging contest soon which should be a great opportunity for links with specific anchor text.

I think this is probably a good bet. I don't want to discount the search engines though. We have found some keywords that seem to have healthy search volume. An example of one would be something like "Ways to fight poverty". My idea is to have a non-branded site or blog post feature Vittana (among other great non-profits). When people search for "Ways to fight poverty" they'll learn about Vittana as well.
I'd need to lobby our CEO to spend time developing these non-branded sites, however. Not sure if this is the best way to go.
Also, we're probably going to get a lot of links from a blogger contest happening soon. Would be a shame if the only links we got said "Vittana"

Search engines are fantastic for many types of ventures. However, in your situation it is possible that social media and placing articles on websites visited by people of the proper demographic will yield superior results.
Instead of hoping that people will type in an unlikely search term you might do better trying to make connections between like-minded people.

Thanks Sha,
Yes, we've we've been doing all those things rather well. This has sent a lot of branded links our way. The problem is no one seems to be discovering our site through search. They're almost always searching for "Vittana". That's why we're trying to identify keyword opportunities.

Hi Kenji,
That would be great - the other thing to look at is developing awareness of your brand through other channels so that people get to know about your organization and come looking for you specfically. It might be worth talking about this with those people you include in your brainstorming.
For example, can you:
- distribute information through schools/universities so that students know about you?
- spread the word through philanthropic organizations to individuals & corporates?
- connect with media/film students at a local college to get short videos, articles, presentations developed for your organization as part of their project work?
- Get some high profile benefactors & students who have been successful to participate in social media, relating their experiences & answering questions?
Hope that helps,
Sha

Thanks Sha,
This is helpful. Hopefully we'll be able to find something from the brainstorming sessions that have high search volume that aren't too competitive.

Hi vittana_seo
Given the unique nature of the service you are providing and the specific "customer" groups you wish to target, I would go right to the source.
Talk to/set up brainstorming sessions with representatives of each potential group and ask them how they would describe what you do (terms they might type into a Search Engine etc):
- past recipients
- potential recipients who are in the system
- past contributors - Individuals
- past contributors - corporate
Hope that helps,
Sha

How to leverage keyword research on-page.
I'm a newbie and I'm a little embarrassed to ask this question, but here it is. Let's say I've done my keyword research and have 200 keywords. How do I use that for on-page/site optimization? Or do I not use it for on-page/site optimization? I guess I'm unclear about the relationship of keyword research and on-page/site optimization. Thanks.

Decide which keyword to check
Hi. I made 3 different keywordlists. based on the following rules: list 1: top 50 of best ranking keywords of this campaign list 2: Top 50 keywords with highest volume in adwords and related to the website list 3: Top 50 last month used keywords by our clients from GWT Now i want to make one top 50 list keywords i want to track and optimize the landingpages for it. What is the best way to choose from these three lists. There are a lot of overlaps (especialy in list 1 and 3.) so those keywords have preference. But how about keywords with high volume and high difficulty, related to the website, and low ranking? i leave the conversion out of it for now, first goal is to get much traffic as possible.

What's your keyword research system?
What is your process for keyword research? I used Google's Keyword Research Tool for the bulk of my research in the past, so I'm pretty lost right now. However, I'm on the ground level of developing a content strategy for my company's website refresh, and this is a great chance to start from scratch with a sound process. The goal, of course, would be not to respond to keywords, but rather, letting holistic keyword research guide our content strategy. But obviously, I still want to grab low-hanging fruit where I can and beef up weaker parts of the site where possible. After reading Ruth Burr's excellent post last week, I'm testing a few tools, and so far am leaning toward Wordtracker for volume/competition data, cross-referenced with Moz's ranking reporting. However, I still need to check out SEMRush and get friendlier with Keyword Planner. I just want a little SEO angel to fall out of the sky and give me a recipe to follow. No? In case someone asks, my current goal is to identify our target audience's search habits to better reach them through content on our company website. While we serve several communities and do plan to geotarget, we're not there yet. So while I'm glad we have that option on Keyword Planner, there's not much I can do with it today.

Google keyword rankings
I show a MON icon (it looks like a calendar page) for all my google rankings. The icon is not clickable. Can anybody tell me what this is? Also, I use to be highly ranked in 100's of keywords in google now barely anything. The domain is several years old and has performed in well in the past. Can't figure out what is going on.

SeoMoz Keyword Tool
Hello All, Ive been using the SeoMoz Keyword tool but have a quick question. Im working on a newer site with a DA according to OSE of 35. Im combing through keywords to rank. Although competition is very high I have found a few holes. According to the Keyword tool in SeoMoz a few keywords Im looking at are roughly 50%. Would it be to difficult to rank for this type of term? Ive been using a combination of Google Trends, Adwords keyword tool, and ubersuggest, to try and see whats available. Does anyone use different tools? Thank you

Keyword management - where do i start?
Hi all, i am a starting out SEO. I have recently been browsing our keyword rankings report and noticed that we are very low down on some quite key search terms. I therefor want to focus over the next few weeks, on bringing us up the rankings for these specific terms. Apologies if this is a very basic one, but**,.... I dont know where to start!** I would be very interested if anyone can give me some advice on a plan of action. What actions should be in my action plan? For example, if i wanted to improve our rankings on the following: English school in malta Learning english in malta English classes in malta
