Advice on SEO for Chinese Website in China

Hey folks,
I am a little out of my depth here because I have never SEO'd a website that is not in English - and especially in China.
I have a few questions that I hope someone can help with?

What are the primary SE's in China

Are there any specifics with regards Keyword Research

Are there any specifics around SEO techniques and climbing up the SERPs?
I know I don't speak Chinese but I will need to be advising.

Yes, that is correct Robert - it is a global site but we must get this into Baidu as well.

One thing here is more around copyright, etc. I was assuming the content you were transferring to Chinese was from a site your client had or you had. If that is so, it is not a problem.

I could be wrong on this, and not really related to what I am doing, but I was under the impression that Google knew if content was scraped and then just translated?
Happy to be corrected on this though

There won't be any problem as it is a different language. Even if you were doing it in Google, there is no problem with duplicate content in two different languages. Otherwise we would have to use totally different content on English/Spanish sites in TX.

OK because we really don't worry about Google in China, can you foresee any problems in taking content from the UK / US site and just copying it straight to the .cn site?

I am lucky that one of the people working with us is a Chinese national and she is already providing content.

In answer to number 1, there is one giant in China and that is Baidu. Luckily,there are a lot of articles on SEO and Baidu (here is one 8 tips on Baidu and SEO). Also, there are articles on Search Engine Land, etc. so you should be good to go there.
As to number two and three, since I have no direct experience, I would have to refer you to the above.
We are handling a couple of sites in South America and working on an African site. The one cautionary would be that the only way to work with another language is to have a true language pro. So, you have to have someone who works professionally with translation of Chinese for mainland China on a regular basis. I would personally look for someone who has lived there or lives there now that already has clients or a body of work.

What should a small company with a difficult SEO/SEM challenge do?
Everyone here knows that SEM and SEO "experts" are everywhere. But our company has a particular challenge - our Volusion-hosted e-store's product offering is so wide that it's a huge challenge to make a dent in our search engine placement. In our earliest days, one SEM "pioneer" company issued us a refund after realizing they couldn't do anything to affect our placement. The problem is that the revenue from any one particular keyword term doesn't return enough sales to make the effort worthwhile - sales are scattered allover the product spectrum. Does anyone have any experience with this particular challenge? What would be considered a realistic monthly budget - given that the business itself is quite small? I don't know what the etiquette on Moz is but YES I am looking to engage a company to help us out.

Have My SEO Cake & Eat It - Mix Viral Content & Business Content?
Hello, I optimize for a fashion, eCommerce site which has catalogue pages and product pages. http://www.zando.co.za/ We're currently working on a large "blog" which tons of great content designed to attract readers, links and tons of long tail traffic. We'll be doing how-to videos, celeb interviews, top-tens, etc. etc. We'll even have a UGC community section eventually. Really great. Now, I want to use the links generated by this section to rank for generics like this: For example: I want to rank for "Lingerie" and I have this page set up as the target: http://www.zando.co.za/women/clothing/lingerie/ I create some amazing content that generates lots of links containing the word "lingerie" . That awesome content lives in:(hypothetical URL:) http://www.zando.co.za/fashion/magazine/how-lingerie-has-changed-over-50-years/ I want to (and this is where you come in 😉 get people linking to my catalogue page (http://www.zando.co.za/women/clothing/lingerie/) where they can find a banner or something alluding to that piece of link bait (the /fashion/magazine/ url). Perhaps similar to the Wordpress style <read more="">page break on posts?</read> Reason is, I want my "Money-Page" to get the links with "Lingerie" in it. Problem is, it'll be another click to the thing they want to find. Also, say I decide a few months later that I want to do another piece, like "lingerie in films" and do the same. My 'banner' idea would get very crowded or, it would mean that I bump the 50-years piece, which then makes for bad UX for readers clicking through looking for the old piece. Or perhaps this can all be solved with good design? Need Advice on Home page Conversion Rate Improvement - not much $$s
Anyone out there have some suggestions for how I can improve my home page and increase my lousy conversion rate? I've spent years on the content and SEO optimization of my site and very little time on making a home page that sells stuff. Tips on marketing actual "Products" rather than "SEO Advice"?
First of all I just want to say that I love SEOMoz, it's by far the best no-BS resource for SEO and online marketing information in general on the entire Internet, and well worth the money. HOWEVER, one beef I am starting to have with it recently is... Most of the content being generated is becoming about "how to market to marketers" or "selling SEO" rather than actual advice or focus selling general products or services. By this I mean that all the new trends towards pumping out content based on research, making fancy infographics etc. etc. are all well and good for those who are trying to market their marketing or SEO talents in general but not THAT applicable to traditional online storefronts. I work for a fairly large company that sells tickets for theme parks/attractions/tours etc. and SEOMoz was a huge help initially for a recent site redesign, but now every time I log on to check for fresh content it's seemingly a repeat similar advice on how to get links or traffic for an SEO business. I don't mean this to come off as a whine because as I said SEOMoz is wonderful, but I've conducted endless site searches for (recent) information on traditional online marketing etc. and the ratio just seems to be...off. Anyone else feeling this way?

How important to conversions is proper English on a website?
Many websites - especially those done in foreign countries by non-native English speakers - have many grammatical and idiomatic errors in the English copy. How important is that to conversions (actually convincing the customer to buy, etc.) Is the poor English a turn-off, a cause for distrust or discomfort - or do people not care? I'd be interested to hear people's personal opinions (the more the merrier) and if anyone has a more global perspective backed by research, testing, etc - that would be great, Thanks in advance!
