Better to update or add articles?
-
Hi,
We have an online gift store and we write new blogs every year. Question is, if we already had a blog that's called 'Top Valentine Gifts' from last year, should we update the blog content with the most updated data,
or should we add a new blog called 'Top Valentine Gifts 2012' and rename the old one to 'Top Valentine Gifts 2011' (and 301 redirect the old URL)?
Which one is more beneficial in terms of SEO?

Make the new page for 2012 and then link it from the 2011 page.
Believe me I am all for adding year values on websites, you would be surprised how many people search with the year value it is a crucial element.
I would start the social buzz, articles, blogging, link building for the page as valentines day is soon.

If you have evergreen content that's going to repurposed every year, it's definitely best to have a URL without the year, unless the year is relevant to the content*.
If it were my site, I would create a new page (not blog post), titled /top-valentine-gifts/ or whatever you choose, and create a link on the 2011 page to the new page - something like "Click here to see the best valentine gifts". Feel free to make the title & h1 for the page say 2012 and update that each year, just don't include it in the URL.
If you're concerned about blog subscribers seeing the content in the blog section or the RSS feed, then I would create a blog post along the lines of "Best Valentine's Day Gifts for 2012" that has some unique content that is valuable for this year, and link that to the primary page that has content relevant to all years.
*** If the year is relevant to the content:**
One example of where I would use the year in a page URL is if the content was going to be relevant only to that year, such as Best Movies of 2011 or 2012 Olympics. If there is value to keeping that content around for years with the original content on it, then that's a good argument for creating new pages for each event. If you're really savvy, keep tabs on who links to your 2012 Olympics content, so that you can contact those people when 2014 rolls around...

Hi - How do you get rid of duplicate content that was accidentally created on a tag url? For example, when I published a new article, the content was duplicated on: /posts/tag/lead-generation/
the original article was created with: /posts/shippers-looking-for-freight-brokers/ How can I fix this so a new URL is not created every time I add a tag to a new posting?

After HTTPS upgrade, should I change all internal links, or a general 301 redirect is better?
I recently upgraded to https. Of course most internal links of my old posts are still http. So I set up a 301 redirect in order to make the old link works. In terms od SEO this is good or it is better to update all the internal links to https, manually? In that case can I do it in batch with a search/replace command in the phmyadmin database? any other suggested method? thank you

Update old article or publish new content and redirect old post?
Hi all, I'm targetting a keyword and we used to rank quite good for it. Last couple of months traffic of that keyword (and variations) is going down a bit. I wrote an extensive new post on the same topic, much more in dept and from 600 to 1800 words covering the same topic. Is it better to update the old article and mention that it's updated recently, or publish a new post and redirect the old post to the new post?

URL SEO: Better directory structure vs. exact keyword phrase
I am trying to understand how to best optimise a url for a page to rank high for specific keywords. Example: a top keyword search is "rental properties in new york". Question is does this keyword need to appear as this exact phrase in the url or should it be broken up into different directories for a better structure e.g.: www.abc.com/en/properties/new-york/rental OR www.abc.com/en/rental-properties-in-new-york Which will help the page rank higher (given all other things on the page are exactly the same)? Thanks!

Best practice for footer in ecommerce - Shall I add Top Category links?
What would you recommend regarding links to "Top Products" and "Top Categories" in footer? Would you add them to give extra link juice to top categories? would you try to avoid category links in footer that are already in the header navigationor in the main content area to avoid linking twice from all pages? would you vary these top category links in footer according to main category

Does it make any difference to your SEO if the homepage infrequently updates.
Hi everyone! Working on a site and the homepage hardly ever updates. Probably 3/4 times per year. The only page on the site which does is the blog page which updates 4 times per week. Is this a bad thing? Is there anything I should attempt to do?
