Do you use a different tactic to optimize for Bing?
-
Google is king, but it seems as though there is a significant source of traffic and revenue from Bing. What is the preferred strategy? Optimize for Google and hope it filters to Bing? An obvious concern would be that if we change tactics to please Bing, we could stand to lose our rankings with Google. Any opinions/thoughts/feedback/suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi! I see that a good part of your reply is based off of this October 2010 blog post at http://sixrevisions.com/content-strategy/seo-for-bing-versus-google/. I'd love to see any more recent information that you might have, as well as personal experience.

Honestly, just by doing my stuff I do for Google, all my words rank super high in Bing. It just happens there. They seem to also stick much better in Bing, very little movement once I am at the top.

Google is not king...they are taking over the world....
Obviously, Bing's algorithm is different from Google's because when the search term is the same but the set of results is different, a difference in the algorithm is the obvious answer. Because google is dominating, the real question is what is difference between the two algorithms and is the difference large enough that it makes it mandatory to reoptimize a site for Bing. THE ANSWER IS NO....unless you have ten things to do and three of them optimize for bing and google, then prioritize those.
Regardless, tests by SEO engineers all around the world have come to a few conclusions about what causes these differences in search engine results....here they are.....
Get Cozy with Microsoft Ad center. They wont admit it but all of our urls, over 50, got enhanced results on Bing when we started doing more in adcenter........believe it.
Backlinks Are Less Important in Bing Comparisons between backlinks (how many links point to a web page) have shown that, all being equal, the top ten search engine results in Bing have fewer backlinks than in Google.
PageRank Matters Less in BingMicrosoft hates google....lets face it.. Page Rank is Google’s algorithm that places a number relative to a web page’s search engine results strength, have shown that PageRank2 (or even PR1) sites regularly appear in the top ten results on Bing, whilst this almost never happens on competitive phrases in Google. (But then it does make sense that a Google-patented page-ranking method would carry less weight with Microsoft’s Bing.)
Inbound Anchor Text Matters More in BingA factor common to both major search engines, anchor text (the text inside the
<a></a>
<a>tags; i.e., </a><a>This is the anchor text</a>
) from quality sources seems to be a large factor with Bing; more so than with Google. A strange phenomenon here seems to be that Bing puts more emphasis on anchor text links that have the linking phrase in the title of the page.Microsoft SEO ToolkitThe Internet information Services SEO tool kit, say that five times fast, is a solid tool kit released by Microsoft that helps you improve your site from an SEO point of view, and therefore, by logic improves its Bing ranking. It includes all the normal stuff: site analysis, robots.txt exclusion, sitemaps, etc.
Pretty good recent article on it can be found here: http://www.brafton.com/blog/seo-tips-to-boost-bing-rankings-as-microsoft-fearlessly-battles-google-800459707
Hope this helps......Ciao!

I don't use any different tactics to optimize for Bing. Great targeted content that is easily accessible and has good quality signals (links and social) will rank well on both engines. Bing appears to be a bit more picky on use of the canonical tag and with how clean your sitemap is. Google appears to be a bit more lenient on these fronts, probably due to having a more sophisticated engine.

Does Google frown on using 3 different page titles with same content to secure the top 3 results in SERPs?
Is it frowned upon by Google to create 3 different pages with the sames content yet different titles to secure the top three results in SERPs? For example: Luxury Care Homes in Liverpool Care Homes in Liverpool Private Care Homes in Liverpool The page titles are different with slightly different meta data but the user content is exactly the same, would this be considered a cheeky win or negative to rankings?

Duplicate content across different domains
Hi Guys, Looking for some advice regarding duplicate content across different domains. I have reviewed some previous Q&A on this topic e.g. https://moz.com/community/q/two-different-domains-exact-same-content but just want to confirm if I'm missing anything. Basically, we have a client which has 1 site (call this site A) which has solids rankings. They have decided to build a new site (site B), which contains 50% duplicate pages and content from site A. Our recommendation to them was to make the content on site B as unique as possible but they want to launch asap, so not enough time. They will eventually transfer over to unique content on the website but in the short-term, it will be duplicate content. John Mueller from Google has said several times that there is no duplicate content penalty. So assuming this is correct site A should be fine, no ranking losses. Any disagree with this? Assuming we don't want to leave this to chance or assume John Mueller is correct would the next best thing to do is setup rel canonical tags between site A and site B on the pages with duplicate content? Then once we have unique content ready, execute that content on the site and remove the canonical tags. Any suggestions or advice would be very much appreciated! Cheers, Chris

Use hreflang on links without rel alternative?
Does it do any good to use hreflang on links without rel="alternative" ? We have on each page a possibility to go to another language, but the languages root page and not an alternative version of that specific article.

:Pointing hreflang to a different domain
Hi all, Let's say I have two websites: www.mywebsite.com and www.mywebsite.de - they share a lot of content but the main categories and URLs are almost always different. Am I right in saying I can't just set the hreflang tag on every page of www.mywebsite.com to read: rel='alternate' hreflang='de' href='http://mywebsite.de' /> That just won't do anything, right? Am I also right in saying that the only way to use hreflang properly across two domains is to have a customer hreflang tag on every page that has identical content translated into German? So for this page: www.mywebsite.com/page.html my hreflang tag for the german users would be: <link < span="">rel='alternate' hreflang='de' href='http://mywebsite.de/page.html' /></link <> Thanks for your time.

Using the same picture, but 2 differents pages and Alt descriptions
Hi Moz experts, I have a quick technical question for you. If we would like to use the same picture on the website, but using differ Alt description and also, be sure to customize it to make sure, it will not look like the other. This strategy is for saving cost on new picture. Do you think google will see this as iidentical content ? Thank you for your hands up on this question.

Page not showing up on Bing/Yahoo
We have a page that's ranking well on Google, however the page is not showing up in either Yahoo or Bing. What's even more odd is that for Y! and Bing, the page doesn't return in SERP even when you explicitly search for it (e.g. homepage + name of page). Instead, the result that gets returned is our homepage along with a Page Title that's been manipulated to include the keywords, but the title is not what we have in our title tag. Bing processed our sitemap today and I also manually submitted the URL, but it's still not turning up. Any thoughts?

How to structure your site correctly for optimal juice flow?
Hello fellow mozzers. I have a question regarding structuring a site for optimal link juice flow. If you have an existing website that has for instance a contact page, we know its pointless for that page to have any juice at all. In a hypothetical scenario would it be ok to no index, no follow that page? What happens to existing pagerank on such a page? for instance if you have a contact page with pr 4 and you no index, no follow it, I understand the pagerank will disappear from that page but will it be distributed to other pages on your site? What would be the correct way of handling this scenario?

Not ranking as well in Yahoo/Bing as in Google. Why?
For my top 132 keywords, my target ranks an average of 7 positions lower in Bing and an average of 9 positions lower in Yahoo. Does anyone have some good resources to read, or any tips on why we would rank so much poorer in Bing/Yahoo than in google?
