Verify web master tools ?!?!
-
Randomly today google web master tools all of a sudden wants me to re-verify my site and is giving me the error:
Verification failed for **http://www.shiftins.com/ **using the Meta tag method (less than a minute ago). We couldn't find the verification meta tag.
but if you view the page source it is clearly listed..... this happened only today while no changes were made to the site. Does anyone have a solution?

Hi again,
It's really hard to say what happened without any extra info, but it could just be one of those random occurrences w/ Google's API. If the hosting has been suspended or the domain registration has been renewed recently, that's a possibility. Perhaps another user on the account did something they shouldn't have... Good new is that everything should be fine once you re-verify, but as to the cause of the 'bug' it's hard to pinpoint without some investigation.
Thanks again,
Anthony

see the thing is it is linked with both GA and webmaster tools. currently the GA works but not WM. There is nothing wrong with the code at the top it just stopped working.... Also I wouldn't be able to get the other fixes to work until monday so if anyone can give advice on what happened I would appreciate that.

Hi,
That's very strange indeed. Are you sure there were absolutely no changes made? If not, I'd try to verify it using a different method, and then switch back to the Meta Tag method to see if that fixes it.
From Google:
- On the Webmaster Tools home page, click the site you want.
- On the Dashboard, click Configuration, and then click Users.
- Click Manage site owners, and then click Verify using a different method.
- Verify your site again using the new method.
Personally, I always verify Webmaster Tools by linking it to the Google Analytics account associated with the site. This keeps the code a little cleaner in your page's section, and allows easier sharing of data with other users and applications.
Hope this helps!

Google Analytics shows most referrers as "Direct" -- What are some better tools?
Very often Google Analytics will show 50-90% of our referrers as (direct) which is not very helpful. Are there other tools out there that will provide a clearer breakdown of what other websites are sending us our traffic? Specifically, I want to be able to be able to tell who are the top traffic referrers to my top performing pages on my site for the last 30 days. (I want to be able to study this on a per-page basis.) Thanks in advance!

Pinterest links have been growing in Webmaster Tools
I've been using Pinterest for a couple of years now. It has been great in promoting our brand and generating referral traffic. My question is this. I've noticed in Webmaster Tools, in the "Links to your site" section, that my links from Pinterest has really shot up.It's gone from 3,500 links, 6 months ago, to over 23,000 recently. Those of you using Pinterest, have you seen a similar increase? Just wondering if Google is recognizing more of the links, even though they are "no-follow" links.

Verifying Site Ownership & Setting Up Webmaster tools for clients who use Hubspot
We are a Hubspot partner agency. I'm trying to find the best route for managing Google's tools as an extra resource for insight, not the primary basis for marketing effort. I also want to explore adwords in more depth. Finding a lot of our clients don't have one or the other or both Analytics/Webmaster tools in place. Can I verify site ownership to set up webmaster tools simply by having admin access to their analytics account or will that require ownership of the analytics account? With Google merging things together these days I'm not sure of the best approach to take. Usually clients have their site hosted somewhere and built on some platform and ADD a Hubspot blog and the landing pages/cta's, Hubspot tools on a subdomain hosted by Hubspot. Hubspot has tools in it's website settings for adding google analytics (actually it's just a field to add code to the header area). If a client has universal analytics on their primary domain do I still need to go and add a separate analytics property for the subdomain and go through Hubspot's tools to install it on the subdomain? Or just use the same code from their primary domain and add it to the Hubspot header? What is the best route? Any additional thoughts on this subject are welcome - with so much updating and changing coming from Google (and Hubspot as we implement 3.0 - COS) I'm trying to avoid wasted effort, outdated methods, etc. Thanks!

Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools Setup for Agencies
Hi, As agencies, what are people finding to be the best practices for allowing multiple members of the agency's team to access client WMT and GA data? Have a generic "analytics@myagency.com" account that's used for the shares, that anyone in the agency can use as needed (limited, of course, not admin). Have the individual person at the company use their company email for the share for each particular client? employee@agency.com. Yet what happens when we need someone else to check the GA or WMT data? Any advice is much appreciated.
