Looking for Feedback on Rankings Dropping
-
Hi,
I am looking for some guidance on figuring out a problem I am having with one of my clients. Their site is http://www.macton.com. They have seen a pretty significant drop in rankings for "hoist systems" "industrial turntables" and "railroad equipment."
Below is my analysis and thoughts. Please let me know if you have any input you can provide me with.
Hoist Systems
- Rankings started dropping significantly July 2nd. Their average position was around the 2nd - 3rd page. They're now in position 100.
- Some things I noticed is that Google is now ranking the page /freight_rail/portable-car-hoist-freight for this term, whereas a few months ago it was ranking /rail_equipment/car-hoist.
I'm not sure why Google has started to rank this new page for this term when there is no reference to that keyword in the page and the other one is better suited.
Industrial Turntables
- Rankings started dropping off in January and they have been up and down and even fell off for a bit in March. They took a deep dive May 28 - Jun 11 and are slowly picking up.
- I noticed that Google is also changing which page it is choosing to rank for this term. Currently it is ranking /rail_equipment/locomotive-turntables, previously it was ranking the homepage around May 28th, and before that it was /equipment/industrial-testing.
Some things we thought would help this was to create a whole new page just on industrial turntables in order to rank better for this term.
Another thing that I think would be highly beneficial is to do some more aggressive link building. Their top anchor text is all brand related, and very few include their target keywords. To my knowledge, I don't think they have a penguin issue, although I could be mistaken.
Can anyone provide input and/or guidance on my analysis? Any suggestions?

Thanks for your input. I know they have some duplicate content at the moment, but I didn't think it would affect it this drastically. No links appear to be spammy and over optimization doesn't seem to be the issue.

When G starts replacing with pages that are not as relative you can consider it may have something to do with a penalty.
Start looking at duplicate content, spammy links to or from the page/site, over optimization, bounce rates etc.
Hope this helps

Major Dip in Keyword Rank - Why?
Last week my ranking for "keyword A" was relatively high at 16. Since then it's dropped a staggering 31 spots. It's certainly the most important keyword we can rank for so seeing it go -31 spots is rather frightening. I have a couple of theories: We haven't included it in our blog content as anchor text but once in the past 2 or so weeks since the last crawl was done by moz on oct. 21. The lack of recent links with the anchor text of "keyword A" pointing back to the blog is causing it to lose it's rapport. I've been adding most of our blog posts to Reddit and we've been getting almost double the traffic from Reddit alone. But with that comes a much higher bounce rate (~80%). Could posting and having visitors bounce from our blog posts cause the ranking to go down? I would love to get your thoughts on this issue. Thanks,

Ranking For Non-Context-Friendly Terms Without Anchor-Text
We are now at a point with Google where having a link profile that has a lot of exact match anchor text for a few main keyword targets is not a good thing. Â So, how do we rank for terms that do not fit into the content of your site, but are still good keyword targets. Here is an example from my situation. Â A good keyword target for my area and business that I am working for is "plumber riverside" or "plumber riverside ca." Â In a gramatical sense, these two/three words do not belong together in content, i.e they would not make a proper sentence being placed together, except with maybe a comma or period separating them. Â In fact, this term probably wouldn't even make a good sidebar link copy. Without having a link profile with "plumber riverside" as my most common anchor text, how can I let Google know that I should rank for this term? Â Anchor text used to be the go to but now you have to really minimize the use of it for exact match terms. Â Without on page content, it seems pretty hard. Â Any thoughts?

What should I look for when choosing a good article directory for SEO purposes?
I have been writing SEO content for blogs for the past year or so, but I am fairly new to article directories. With SEO in mind, what makes a particular article directory valuable?  Currently I'm using EzineArticles and Squidoo; I liked Ezine in particular because of their thorough review process.  I saw that recently Squidoo also amped up their  checks for original content as a result of Google's stricter policies. I was interested in using HubPages also since they are good about reviewing content.  I'm just curious how much factors like this reflect on an article directory SEO-wise.  Are there any additional factors that set a a good article directory apart?

What Are the Best Practices for Ranking for Synonyms?
This topic has me entirely confused, and unsure if we should keep a website focused on one keyword group, and using synonym contextual links to rank it for other keyword  synonyms. We simply have not seen enough data or run enough tests to find our answer, and wanted to reach out to the community to see if anyone has. I have seen Google rank a synonym to my search query on the first page, and is why we are confused. Let's use an example: We'll use "Industry" as the main keyword for our page. "Company" or "Companies" is viewed as a synonym by Google of this keyword.  When we query "Industry", "Company" and "Companies" are also found in bold. 1.) Is it best practice to also create a unique page targeting synonyms? Our thinking is that it would be best to try and target exactly what the user is looking for rather than having a synonym to their search for better conversions, but as mentioned above we feel it's best to hit exactly what they query because that's their way of thinking.  That they're looking for that exact match. 2.) Have the page "Industry", but do some link building using contextual links "Company" or "Companies" pointing back at our "Industry" page. Would this help rank our "Industry" page for "Company"  or "Companies" even though the main page is "Industry"? Just not sure we want to do this as the reasoning explained in #1. Thanks for your help!
