Keyword - Competition between competitors
-
So, I'm about 2-3 weeks into my subscription and see a renewal coming. I love the information I'm getting - but I really want to maximize my capabilities with these tools.
Any article/blogs or forum post suggestions that I should read would be awesome, right now I'm still in that phase where i see lots of cool things - but have no idea to fully use them to really give me that even bigger boost.
My First Question is - There are some keywords, that I climb and sometimes slip. But overall a competitor and i flip flop between 15-22 range for it. What would be a good way for me to really add that extra push to throw me down into the top ten and leave them in the dust?..
Also on the Keyword topic - There are a lot of keywords they probably rank for that I don't, what is the best way to go about identifying keywords they may targeting/have a good presence in that I'm not aware of.
I do have a site that is on multiple newspapers, and .gov sites. Among other things... This has already proven to be very good for me. But I'm 99% sure I have a few/lot of leaks, that if they were plugged - We would see a lot of good things come from those results.
-
I appreciate the input - As for the other question, when i'm in a ranking flip-flop with a big competitor which I am in a few strong keywords - where we both kinda leap frog each other in the 15-22 range - How would i go about adding that extra boost to just leave them in the dust?
Should i be tweaking those pages? or posting some relevant content w/ another variation?

A good and quick way to get a feel for you competitor's keywords is checking the meta keywords tag. If you're lucky, they're still using it, thereby sort of disclosing what they want to rank for... Other than that, have a look at their page titles, as most optimized sites usually have their main keywords in there.

Hi,
You can also use the campaigns to track movements of your competitor / competitors - it's a really good set of info / feedback you can receive from that side - including rankings for them (usually for the same keywords that you also target).
Seeing movements up and downs for the same keywords for both your website and competitors will give you the right information to act.
As for Open Site Explorer there is no need to talk about it - it's a must for any ongoing campaigns. Tracking both you and competitors in OSE will again, give you the right information to act with no blindfolds.
To discover the keywords however you need a visibility index tool - and with that info you can get back and track those keywords with SeoMoz.
Hope it helps - as a general overview but fi you have more specific questions place them as a reply.

Hi Travis,
SEOmoz can be extremely helpful when collaborating with other tools as well, one thing I find extremely useful is Open Site Explorer.
You may use OSE to track where backlinks are coming from for your competitor and perhaps those linking to your competitor will have interest in what you have to offer, because after all you are competitors with similar traits in business.
That is just one of the many things SEOmoz tools can do for you.

How better can we compare with a competitor ?
We were ranking 1st to 5th spot for the keyword, "PSD to Joomla Template" for this page, http://www.qubesys.com/psd-to-joomla-template/ for last 2 years! But since last 6 months, we are getting like 0 traffic to this page and absolutely no leads. We just tried to compare with a ranking competitor who has been on top for last 7-8 months already, www.joomla6teen.com/Convert-PSD-to-Joomla-Template.html I just compared it with my page, http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/comparisons?site=www.joomla6teen.com%2FConvert-PSD-to-Joomla-Template.html&comparisons[0]=http://www.qubesys.com/psd-to-joomla-template/ I see our page wins in PAGE METRICS , but falls in SUB DOMAIN AND ROOT DOMAIN Metrics . Whats that ? How do we know, what all things we need to improve at ?

My (properly optimised) webpage outscores page#1 ranked competitors on page/domain authority ... but I'm only on page#2\. Huh?
I'm puzzled. I've optimised a particular page for a particular search term, and the SEOMoz tool gives me an A for on-page optimisation. So no problem there. I can understand why my webpage/site is being outranked by pages from (for example) the Guardian and Oxford University, but there are several sites that Google is ranking on page #1 though their page and domain scores are well below ours. Specifically: my page/domain authority scores are 46/52, compared with 22/46 for the competitor that Google is ranking #5 - yet we only rank a lowly #12. And it's not as though the particular page in question isn't an obvious and appropriate part of our site. We work with new writers and the page in question offers a selection of creative writing courses. It's not like we're a writing-related site that suddenly has a page advertising fake rolexes. It's not a timing issue either, as most of our links have been in place for a couple of years at least. So I'm puzzled. And concerned. This page of ours was a reliable revenue generator for us and it's dying out there on the page#2 wilderness. If anyone can help, I'd be massively grateful. I don't know if this is helpful, but the page in question is http://www.writersworkshop.co.uk/Creative-Writing-Courses.html and the search term is ... well, heck, you take a wild guess. We're a British firm, so the only search engine that really matters to us is google.co.uk

Competitive Link building
Hi Folks According to Site Explorer this link ... www.quotationspage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=12032&p=98500 .... has a page Authority of 42 and a domain Authority of 87. Looking at this it seems to be 3 links embedded in a forum comment. What I would love to understand is... how valuable is this link? (Especially with Panda and Penguin?) ... How do i decide if I should also peruse a similar link for my site? Thank you in advance

Competitor reporting
We are in the process of creating customer profiles, conducting in-depth keyword/competitor research, fleshing out a content strategy, addressing old content, meta data etc, and researching sites (particular industry news sites) relevant to our industry who could be sources of authoritative backlinks. Once we receive approval from the powers that be, we'll start putting our strategy in motion. However, we are looking at SEO efforts as a long-term plan the entire organization understands is necessary. If our strategy is sound, I would think we'll start seeing results and some competitors will begin to take notice (and action.) So here is my question: How easy is it for a competitor to "report" a small/medium size business as breaking Google's rules i.e. could a competitor claim we are scraping their content (or content off of any site for that matter) and anonymously email Google? I think the answer to that question is "yes." How closely would Google look into the claim? We have zero plans on doing anything shady or underhanded but I was wondering if it is a simple process for a competitor to impact our efforts this way? Thanks for any insight.

Much better authority and content than some competitors, why do they appear first?
On august we have lost the top positions for some keywords. Our website authority is 62 (google page rank 5), and some quite small competitors appear first now (some of them have authority 22, google page rank 3!). Our only big change was the DNS server, from godaddy to dnsimple.com, which seems to be some milisseconds slower. Every other metric is in our favor: from on-page repports to site speed. Sometimes by a factor of 3 or 4. What can be happening? We have also realized that, in private browsing, rankings will change a little bit in different cities, even if they are quite close to each other.

How to check Google Keyword rankings?
Hey, So I recently watched the DuckDuckGo commercial about Google's results bubble. My question is how can you get the actual keyword rankings of relevant key phrases without Google taking your locations and search history into account? Would it just be a case of clearing your cache & history from the beginning of time or is there an accurate tool (other than SEOmoz ofc that I can use? Best regards, Dan

Keyword Research Tool Problem
Hi, I had been in SEO for around 2 to 3 years, I am looking for your suggestion if there is any best keyword research tool. I tried almost most of the keyword research tool (both paid or free) but I found the following problem: -Worktracker: I think it is too difficult to use and understand as a non technical person. I always wonder the data accuracy because when the same keyword appear in Google for few thousand traffic, it only appear in Wordtracker for few dozen or hundred of search. Also I don't think they suggest any long trail keywords in my view. The long trail keyword you can also find in free keyword search tool. -Google Keywords Tool- Good, but it can only show 100 results. I cannot get a better pictures of related or niches keywords. I always find some competitive keywords can rank easily but some non competitive keywords usually very difficult to rank in some case. It will depend on how you interpret the data results. -Keyword Discovery and Wordstream-Although I really want to subscribe, but they are a way too expensive (you have to subscribe for 12 months). I check with their free keywords tool but only shown very limited results. Although there are some other like spyfu.com or keywords spy...... Is there any one can suggest me which is the best tool to start with keyword search for the long trail and niche keywords ? or is there any way or trick to find the best keywords ? Thank you. Tom

How to find a neutral rank for a webpage a keyword term?
Hi!
Competitive Research | | lilactree
I'm sure this has been answered here already - I'm just not searching for the right words. I'm trying to find the ranking for a website for specific terms. Being that the search engine remembers what I search (I try to log out, privately browse, etc), everything matters and impacts my search. I'm trying to see what a website ranks for a person who has never visited that website before, or doesn't have other factors influencing the result. I tried the keyword research tool, and while that seems to deliver what I'm after, it only gives 1-10. Even though these are the coveted positions 😉 I'd like to know if a website isn't ranking there, and is further down. We track the progress made after work is done to a page, to see if it moves up, and what other tweaks we need to make to improve the rankings and attract clicks. Thanks!0
