Client has 2 websites... won't do away with old site.
-
Ok my situation is: We have built a new site for a client and they would like to keep both sites working. Should I just attempt to optimize both sites to rank well in their area? Or should I be suggesting a 301 redirect from the old domain to the new? Other options?
Thanks in advance

My husband has two real estate sites. My plan, when I made the new one was to take the old one down. But for some reason it mysteriously ranks well for several terms and continues to bring us business.
With that being said, if there is duplicate content across the two sites then one is going to suffer.
If the old site is ranking well, it may be ok to keep it. But, it will be a challenge to optimize both sites. It's much better to work on one site. In most cases, I would redirect the old to the new site. The only reason I would personally keep the old one is if it was ranking well already for them.

Google isn't a fan of duplication. I've been watching more and more companies who had multiple sites realize it's going to bite them, and they have been merging (or, redirecting) into one.
I'd never advocate for two sites, mostly because of the same reasons others mentioned.

I think it comes down to whether you have the resources to keep both sites at the top of their games. Having two sites is pretty much twice the work of having one (see, I'm a maths genuis me!) if they are both to rank well. You "should" be able to grab a larger slice of the top ranking spots with two sites but it is hard work.

I had contemplated this a couple of years ago. We had an old site and just created a new one. The old site was performing well in the search results for popular keywords. We didn't want to risk losing any ranking doing a 301 redirect and we wanted to attempt having multiple listings on search results - so, we kept both!
We stopped updating the old site and let it coast then started working on SEO for the new site and eventually had two well performing sites on the SERPs.
And with google merging organic and place pages, you could use the new site as the URL for a place page if the company you are working with is a local business. So you'll have a organic listing and place listing.
I thought I would share my experience with you to consider what is possible with keeping both sites. However, there is nothing wrong with 301 redirecting to the new site.

Good question
It's a new site with new content... I believe their thinking is "2 sites is better than 1". I'm going to continue to fight the uphill climb and get them to ditch the old one.

Why do they want to keep it? Implementing 301 redirects is essential and is the best-practice as you want to have only unique content out there.

No index for http version of website
Hi, I've had a message from Google search console to say the sitemap for the http version of my site is tagged as no index. As the https version is indexed, do I need to change the http version to be indexed as well? Do I need to keep the http version of the site in search console alongside the https version, or should I remove it? Advice appreciated!

On Site Question: Duplicate H2...
Hi All A few on-site audit tools pull information on duplicate H2 tags on pages. This implies it's a bad thing and should be fixed - is that the case? On one of my sites the tag-line is in H2 in the header, so appears on every page... Just wondering if this is something worth fixing. Thanks

New jobboard: Can redirecting folder (site.com/jobboard) to subdomain (jobboard.site.com) hurt SEO?
Hi there, I'm planning to implement a jobboard on my website which needs to be installed on a subdomain (jobboard.site.com) but I'd really like to use site.com/jobboard for promoting this jobboard (jobboard collects external industry jobs). Are there any possible disadvantages when I set up a 301 redirect from jobboard.site.com to site.com/jobboard? Also: What if I want to move this jobboard to a unique domain one day (e.g. jobboard-industry-xy.com), Would that be tricky (as I'd basically have to redirect the folder-to-subdomain redirect to an external domain and therefore get a folder-to-subdomain-to-external-domain redirect...)? Cheers, Thomas

How to use canonical with mobile site to main site
I am pretty sure that the mobile version of the main site needs to be the same canonical link from what I understand. I am trying to find good docuementation that supports this. Even better if its from Google or Matt Cutts. I have a main domain like http://www.mydomain.com the mobile version of this is http://www.mydomain.com/m/ Should my canonical be rel="canonical" href="http://www.mydomain.com"/> for both these pages?

Why don't all my pages have On Page Optimization Reports
Apologies if this question has been asked a million times, but I can't find it. I have 35 pages, yet only 5 of them have generated On Page Optimization Reports. I know I can create them manually, but wondered if I've done something incorrectly? Iain.

2 Question about URL structure
Hello guys 1 - I have a question about the best structure for URLs from the point of view of SEO: Is it OK to use the URL as mywebsite.com.br/long-tail-article Or is better this mywebsite.com.br/category/long-tail-article 2 - When part of my keyword is already in my "category", for example: mywebsite.com.br/digital-marketing/digital-marketing-is-good I leave it as it is, or in the following way: mywebsite.com.br/digital-marketing-is-good NOTE: Do not take into account that this URL would be different from other URLs in this category

Sister Sites or Joint Family?
A large News Media Group has a Tv Channel, print newspaper, radio channel (for music primarly) and an online website that includes the newspaper content and other original content in different media. My question is, is it better to have independant websites for these different mediums or have all the content on one big website. Currently the newspaper and blog are online as one whereas the radio channel has its own website and the television has its own. So should we maintain sister sites and cross link to each other or have one big happy family under one house? Best, Rishad.
