New site, SEO well considered, no traffic :/ What next?
-
Hi There!
We've built whatphone.com.au with SEO at the top of the list but things are not going as expected.
Yes, there's still a lot of work to do, but I was hoping to get some guidance on what to do next to make sure we keep the right focus.
This is what we've done to date:
-
Added lots of unique and relevant content, particularly to our blog (and will continue to do so on a weekly basis)
-
Ensured internal linking is strong
-
Optimised each product page around product name (and relevant internal links pointing to it)
-
Ensured the code is clean (ok, we are not a 100% but in a good place)
-
URL structure, metadata, page titles, file names and alt tags following best practice
-
Named the company and registered our domain around one of main keywords we are currently targeting "what phone"
What we're working on:
-
Link building
-
Site speed
-
Social signals
-
Rich media (videos, more images)
Not a bad effort right? No love from an organic traffic perspective Ok, the site / domain is no older than 2 months old, it's a very competitive industry, and no inbound links yet, but come on!
Questions:
-
Are there any benefits of engaging external providers to help with link building? I'm talking about outsourcing from elancer or similar.. Or is this playing with fire?
-
Have we missed something obvious here?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
PS: we currently have some issues with our pricing tables, but will fixed as soon as possible..

A quick look at the SEOMoz keyword difficulty tool tells us that is a 68% - Highly Competitive search term and you are just not going to rank a new site for that term overnight.
This is not a perfect science but just take a look at some of the commercial sites that do rank
- 500 linking domains, 100 linking domains to the page itself
This is the kind of ballpark you are working in and you are just not going to do that overnight.
You need to look at a long term strategy, start with long, long tail and work backwards over time - this kind of thing:
what phone to replace htc desire
what phone for an old age pensionerThen when you have this kind of level dialled in come back a notch in terms of competitive keywords and slowly but surely (over a year or so) work towards your bigger terms.
Also, remember, phrases like 'what phone', it probably shows big numbers but just how good a term is that? What is someone looking for? An informative breakdown of which phones are around maybe? Maybe you could do that and provide a truly authoritative look at the phones around and update it each qtr on your site.
Look to become known for your content, seed it out in other ways, be the best possible result for 'what phone' and keep your eye on the prize and you will get there but.... it's going to take time and effort and some content smarts.
Oh, and don't buy cheap links, that's just going to smash this ship into the rocks before you even leave the port!
Hope this helps
Marcus

Even if this might not be a very helpful comment.... but that's the experience I've made every time. Unless we have some coverage from major media sources it always took a minimum of 3 months, but up to one year until we got some decent traffic to our site. So I don't think it's that you're doing something wrong, it's just the name of the game..
As you say, it's a competitive business, and unless you get some great link magnets on your site, Adwords might be the way to go for starters. Oh, and of course looking for niches in the long tail.

I think you are playing safe till now... depending on your link building, content marketing and Social Media efforts you can measure the time and impact of your success.
I think asking out for outsourcing is great unless you know that service provide is going to help you instead of getting a shit out of the money you are investing.
I recommend you to go for a freelancer or company who have a good name or have done something for community... and have good idea for your company to work on...
Keep that in mind if all idea they have is directory submissions and article submissions and Yahoo answers then you are wasting your time indeed!

For new websites, Google imposes a "sandbox" penalty so it will be at least a few months before you can rank competitively for keywords. Read more here:

Product Videos and SEO
We sell high end products and we try to educate the consumer as much as possible. Since the attention span is short, we try and break up the features/functions into 5-6 videos. We post everything to Youtube and we have been adding it to our blog as well. I am currently tasked with rebuilding our blog from the ground up. This means getting rid of all the thin content, updating content, etc. We have many videos up there and Just trying to figure out what the best practice should be. The blog is wordpress based and I have the videos now set up in a category structure. Should I just add each video as a video custom post type? Should I have each video posted with a transcript? Or should I post each video with sub background text of the video? We have about 120 videos in all and adding more, but making them longer to reduce the amount of videos per product going forward. Thank you.

Local SEO: Specific pointers on how to improve my campaign
Hello, I changed my address midstream in my campaign, from spelling out "Suite H" to now it's #H. Wow, what a cleanup job. I'm in at least 3 dozen directories I've found, and it looks like there are more. I'm adding myself to all the main directories that yext lists here. I've also used whitespark for a couple of months. My site is here. The term I'm targeting is "Boise Weight Loss. I"m on page 3 and not in the local results. Could you guys give me some pointers on how to get up into the top 3 of the local results? I'm planning on cleaning up and adding directories. I don't know how many I'll need, and of course I am looking for pointers on the other factors (besides citations) as well. Thanks!

Is it considered duplicate contentnt to post a video to youtube then embed that video on our website's FAQs page?
Essentially, I am answering popular questions we are asked and answering them in a video. Once I post it on youtube, I take the video, add it to our FAQ page, and when someone clicks on the question, a new page opens with the question, the video, and the written answer to the question underneath it. Thanks for any advice. watch?v=bwGRmvnCn7w

A lot of local SEO questions from a newbie...
I've been doing basic SEO for customers for quite awhile now in terms of on-page stuff, but am starting to move into the arena of local SEO services and had a few questions that I hoped you guys could help with. 1. What services besides Google+ Local do you list customers websites in, such as Yahoo or Bing Local? 2. When creating accounts at the services listed question #1, do you have to verify the phone number that's listed with the business owner or is there any extra type of verification needed? How do you deal with getting all that verified for the company? 3. Do you create all these listings at Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. from the same account? 4. Does anyone know of a list of the top 50 places to get local citations such as Yelp or YellowPages? 5. When creating citations do you normally have to verify the phone number or address that you list and how do you deal with that with business owners? 6. Do you use the same accounts to create all the local citations or are different ones required for each listing? 7. What companies would you recommend that handle all the above for you, such as a setting up accounts at Google, Yahoo, and Bing - and then also creating around 50 citations for you? Of course all the login information would also need to be provided for everything they create. Thanks for taking the time to read this post, I look forward to hearing back from all of you!

When do I use no-follow links to interlink on my own site?
Hi Mozzers, When would I ever want to use no-follow links when interlinking pages on my site? The more authority being passed around, the better, right? Does it save or conserve page rank / authority from being transferred to pages you don't necessarily need it on? Thanks!

Old location in Google Places/Google Local
So I started at my company around six months ago. I claimed the company's Google+ page, and have been actively updating it. I also took the step of claiming the company's location in Google Places as well (yes, I know Google is shutting down Google Places in favor of Google+, but I figured it was a logical step to take anyway). Here's my dilemma: the company moved locations 2-3 years ago. That old location is still appearing in Google Places, and it also has its own Google+ page. Is there a recommended way to redirect that old location to our new office in Google Places and Google+?

New website & the dreaded drop in rank & queries.
It's been 18 days since I launched my new website, how should I wait be fore I start to worry. Is it natural for this kind of drop, should I go back to my original splash page?
