Can I point some rel alternate pages to a 404?
-
Hi everyone,
I'm just setting up a series international websites and need to use rel="alternate" to make sure Google indexes the right thing and doesn't hit us with duplicate content.
The problem is that rel="alternate" is page specific, and our international websites aren't exact copies of the main UK website. We've taken out the ecommerce module and a few blog categories because they aren't relevant.
Can I just blanket implement rel="alternate" and let it sometimes point to a 404 on the alternate websites? Or is Google going to find that a bit weird?
Thanks,
James -
Hi Greg,
Forgot to say thanks! We ended up taking your advice and we've made sure each page uses rel alternate correctly. Took a bit of development time, but I'm sure it's worth it in the end.
Cheers,
James -
This will be an issue as you are linking to non existent pages and Google will continue reporting 404 errors in G-WMT.
It would be worth your time to do it accurately one channel at a time.
Greg

Which pages to put hreflang on?
Hi, we are running a site which is a directory consisting of numbers of phone spammers. It contains descriptions, comments and so on. We are currently present in 9 countries. The websites all have the same structure, but, of course, the spam numbers in each country are different ones. If I want to tell Google that our website is available is several locations/languages, do I only put my hreflang tag on the start page then? Thanks

Redirection Question - Can Anyone Help?
Hi Community, I have 2 job boards. Job board A is a .co.uk domain. Job board B is uk.com domain. Job board A displays jobs in the UK but has an international jobs section. Job board B focuses entirely on international jobs. To cut a long story short we are shutting down Job board B as we are going to just be using Job board A in future. In terms of redirection, would it be best to: 1. 301 redirect job board B domain to Job board A. (www.jobboardb.uk.com -> www.jobboarda.co.uk) or 2. 301 redirect job board b to the international jobs section on job board a (as this is the most relevant place for the user to go I am thinking to go with option 2, but I read somewhere that it wasn't best practice. Any help is much appreciated.

Getting pages that load dynamically into the SE's
SEO'ers, Am dealing with an issue I cannot figure out the best way to handle. Working on a website that shows the definitions of words which are loaded dynamically from an open source. Source such as: wiktionary.org When you visit a particular page to see the definition of the word, say; www.example.com/dictionary/example/ the definition is there. However, how can we get all the definition pages to get indexed in search engines? The WordPress sitemap plugin is not picking up these pages to be added automatically - guess because it's dynamic - but when using a sitemap crawler pages are detected. Can anybody give advice on how to go about getting the 200k+ pages indexed in the SE's? If it helps, here's a reference site that seems to load it's definitions dynamically and has succeeded in getting its pages indexed: http://www.encyclo.nl/begrip/sample

Cross domain rel alternate, will it help or hurt?
I have a website that has similar pages on a US version and a UK version. Currently we want Uk traffic to go to the US, but the US domain is so strong it is outranking the UK in the UK. We want to try using rel alternate but have some concerns. Currently for some of our keywords US is #1, UK is #4. If we implement rel alternate, will it just remove our US page? We don't want to shoot ourselves in the foot and lose traffic. Is this worth doing, will it just remove our US ranking and our double listing? Any anecdotes, experiences or opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

Duplicated 404 Pages (Travel Industry)
Our website has creating numberous "future pages" with no alt tag or class tag that are showing up as 404 pages, To make matters worst, they are causing duplicate 404 pages because we have different languages. The visitors cant find the 404s but the searchbots can. Would it better to remove or add the links to robot.txt or add nofollow/noindex tag? This is an example. http://www.solmelia.com/nGeneral.LINK_FAQ http://www.solmelia.com/nGeneral.LINK_HOTELESDESTINOS_BODAS http://www.solmelia.com/nGeneral.LINK_CONDICIONES http://www.solmelia.com/nGeneral.LINK_MAPSITE http://www.solmelia.com/nGeneral.LINK_HOTELESDESTINOS_EMPRESA

Country specific domains pointing to a .com site
Hello, I am new to seo so please be easy if this happens to be a "silly" question. My company has a .com site. We are expanding into global markets, focusing on specific countries right now. General question: Would I be penalized for duplicate content if I purchased country-specific domains and pointed them to the .com site? Thanks, Jim
