More than one web domain
-
Hi
What is best when considering using more than one domain on a website, what the best policy ?
it's a question I get asked a lot, usually because prior to any seo efforts the main domain name purchased is not keyword rich or an abbreviated company name etc.
what impact do new domains have on SEO compared to older existing domains- is it worth changing a generic company named domain for a keyword rich domain?
if having multiple domains pointing to the site is beneficial how best is it to configure?
How do i inform Google?
How do both domains get index when there is only one physical site?
How should i monitor it, Analytic s, SEO moz?
Will the domain compete against each other and effect SEO rank?
Are they best used for marketing purposes on external sites, adverts driving traffic to the main site.
I'm aware there are lots of questions above, any answers/ opinions , links to further info would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

_Ok the thing is – you cannot decide between a keyword rich domain and a general company name. After the EDM update, I think you should not be going for keywords rich domain. Moreover, you find it really tough to make your brand presence stand out. For say, if you have a domain like this – seo-company-UK.com, how on earth you are going to boost its brand image. If this is not enough, you will struggle while building brand based links for the website. Hop you understand. _

thanks for the reply i have read your links, but i am not talking about having two sites mainly two domain pointing to the same site.
but i guess due to the issues i originally noted in my initial question it would be difficult to gain traffic to apart from direct marketing.

Changing the domain name to a keyword rich domain has a lot of pros and cons associated with it. I've listed some below:
Pros
- the obvious - you get the benefit of a keyword rich domain name and over time it can rank well for that keyword
- Easier to optimize for that key phrase
Downside
- Google has gotten very tough on over optimization and exact match domain names
- Slight over usage of the keyword on a page can result in a penalty
- You will lose all the traction that you site has gained with the generic brand name over the years especially the direct traffic that comes to the site
- You will have to 301 all the links to the new domain name and will lose rankings temporarily before google reindexes all the links.
As you can see , there are more disadvantages on changing up the domain . I would not change it up for a keyword rich domain. As opposed to that, try and get the generic domain ranked for that keyword by following all the best practices for SEO ( strong on site, off site, PR )

Old domain still being crawled despite 301s to new domain
Hi there, We switched from the domain X.com to Y.com in late 2013 and for the most part, the transition was successful. We were able to 301 most of our content over without too much trouble. But when when I do a site:X.com in Google, I still see about 6240 URLs of X listed. But if you click on a link, you get 301d to Y. Maybe Google has not re-crawled those X pages to know of the 301 to Y, right? The home page of X.com is shown in the site:X.com results. But if I look at the cached version, the cached description will say :This is Google's cache of Y.com. It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on July 31, 2014." So, Google has freshly crawled the page. It does know of the 301 to Y and is showing that page's content. But the X.com home page still shows up on site:X.com. How is the domain for X showing rather than Y when even Google's cache is showing the page content and URL for Y? There are some other similar examples. For instance, you would see a deep URL for X, but just looking at the
in the SERP, you can see it has crawled the Y equivalent. Clicking on the link gives you a 301 to the Y equivalent. The cached version of the deep URL to X also shows the content of Y.

Any suggestions on how to fix this or if it's a problem. I'm concerned that some SEO equity is still being sequestered in the old domain.

Thanks,

Stephen

Block Domain in robots.txt
Hi. We had some URLs that were indexed in Google from a www1-subdomain. We have now disabled the URLs (returning a 404 - for other reasons we cannot do a redirect from www1 to www) and blocked via robots.txt. But the amount of indexed pages keeps increasing (for 2 weeks now). Unfortunately, I cannot install Webmaster Tools for this subdomain to tell Google to back off... Any ideas why this could be and whether it's normal? I can send you more domain infos by personal message if you want to have a look at it.

Crawl errors which ones should i sort out
Hi, just had my website updated to joomla 3.0 and i have around 4000 urls not found. now i have been told i need to redirect these but i would just like to check on here to make sure i am doing the right thing and the advice i have been given is not correct. I have been told these errors are the reason for the drop in rankings. I need to know if i should redirect all of these 4,000 urls or only the ones that are being linked to from outside of the site. I think about 3,000 of these have no links from outside of the site, but if i do not redirect them all then i am going to keep getting the error messages. around 2,000 of these url not found are from the last time we updated the site which was a couple of years ago and i thought they would have died off now. any advice on what i should do would be great

Domains
My questions is what to do with old domains we own from a past business. Is it advantages to direct them to the new domain/company or is that going to cause a problem for the new company. They are not in the same industry.

Change of domain name?
Hello, We are currently developing a new site for an existing online clothing retailer. The existing site is on a .co.uk domain, however we are targeting a global market and wondered whether we could/should launch the new site under a .com address and whether this would be beneficial? Most of our back links come from Affiliate blogs and we could quite easily change these to the new URL. Thanks Bilal

Is Buying Domains Good For SEO? Can I 301 redirect domains to an Original website?
I have a friend that purchased multiple domains related to their website. Each of these domains have the back ground of the original website and irrelevant content on them. Is is possible to redirect the various domains to certain pages on the original website. For example if the website is www.shoes.com and they purchased domains such as www.leathermensshoes.com and a few others related to the website. Is it SEO friendly to link the domains purchased to the original website?
