Is it okay to use hiddencontaining meta information that is a video transcript?
-
I have been using the tools at DotSub.com to transcribe our YouTube videos. They are free, work really great and I highly recommend them. Today I received an email from DotSub with recommendations for SEO on video. I have a question about #5 on their list. Here it is:
"Step 5: Embed the video transcript into the non-visible meta-data of the page"
"Always embed the video transcript in the page meta-data This is done by placing
the content of the transcription within a non-visible HTML element (a hidden
div). While most search engines do not weight non-visible content as high as
visible content, this will still provide additional SEO for your page. Do
this whether you include the full transcript visibly on your page or not."This is something I have never heard before. And, like many of you, I have always heard that putting anything "hidden" in the HTML is a very bad idea. Is this different? Do any of you do this? Is it really a recommended technique?
Thanks all!
Dana

Thanks very much Phil. I've gotten so much out of your blog posts and I recommend them to everyone who asks me about video SEO. Yes, flat on the page is working pretty well for us right now. The only times it's impractical is when the video is really long. In those instances we are either including the content via a tab, or even by creating a blog post with the video+transcript (much like what SEOMoz does for WBF videos).
I appreciate you and all the others here responding to this question.

I generally concur with the comments so far - it's definitely a good idea to have the transcript within the HTML, marked up with Schema.org and available for users to see.
Set your <div> to style="display:none" and then include a button which will trigger the text display in a drop down, tab or Lightbox overlay.
Alternatively, the Jquery route that Irving suggested is just as good.
Whatever the solution you go with, you just need to stick to the principle of allowing the text to be visible and easily accessible to users if it's also going to be visible to the search enginges.
However, if you're already including transcripts flat on the page, then aside from aesthetics, there's no reason to bother hiding the text .

and some people are deaf so you are making your site more handicapped friendly as well as getting that good unique content on your page to boost SEO!
-
That would be redundant. If anything, maybe offer the option to hide the transcript (for people who don't want to read it and it gets in the way). Otherwise, just make sure you mark it up with all the proper mark up.

Thanks Oleg. Yes, I totally agree with you and CMC-SD about some users preferring to read the transcript instead of watching the video. We are already including the full transcript on the page with the video itself.
Given that we are already including the text visible on the page, would you still recommend including it in a hidden div? Or is that unnecessarily redundant?
-
I agree! I really like reading transcripts rather than watching videos, so thinking about the user rather than the search engine, I would suggest putting the transcript in a collapsed div.
-
I would not hide text on the site.
a jquery actually shows the text to the user and is spiderable (seo friendly) so i would go that route
click "view transcript" link below the video to see

Text in hidden divs is indexed and included in SERPs. The content is still on the page just in video form - I don't see a problem with adding the transcript for SE to "read" the video. I would recommend also offering the option to view the transcript via click for visitors - some people may not have access to sound or prefer reading.
Also be sure to use Schema markup for VideoObject - there is an attribute for transcript that you should apply.

We've just completed a company video. Should we post it everywhere at once, or stagger on various channels (YouTube, website, LinkedIn, Facebook...)
Hopefully we'll get a lot of traffic from our new corporate video. If we post it everywhere at once, will we get a spike in our analytics, and if so, will it be seen by Google as an anomaly, or even suspicious. If we spread out the distribution over several channels over a little time, should we get a longer bump. In either instance, we may consider a sharing schedule to promote it over time.

Meta tags for international domains
Hi Mozers I have 3 top level domains co.nz com.au and com each meta tag for the home page is unique for each country and I have tried to figure this out for the last 3 months, but unfortunately I can't seem to pin point why all 3 meta tags are showing up exactly the same. It seems all meta tags are showing up for the co.nz domain. In the attachments you can see all urls are showing up correctly for each country specific domain, however the meta tag description defaults to the NZ Any help around this would be much appreciated! Thanks all

Is it okay to use eLocal services?
Is it okay to use a service like eLocal's 'reach the web' to clean up our company listings on website directories or is it considered black hat? Our company name and address is inconsistent on many of the website directories and we want to clean it up fast. eLocal has a service that can do this. I just want to make sure it's not considered bad to have a vendor do it. Thanks!

A site is using their competitors names in their Meta Keywords and Descriptions
I can't imagine this is a White Hat SEO technique, but they don't seem to be punished for it by Google - yet. How does Google treat the use of your competitors names in your meta keywords/descriptions? Is it a good idea?

Using Yext - Opinions? Thoughts? Harmful effects on SEO?
Hi All, Does anyone have any experience using Yext? We have 36 locations across the US and I think it would be great to get our local listings knocked out efficiently. Can anyone provide information on the directories they list you in (perhaps Google places listings, for example)? Also, can anyone provide feedback as to whether or not there is any harm with blasting so many directories at once? I don't want to do anything that might harm our SEO rankings or provide low quality links. Thanks in advance!

Duplicate content or not? If you're using abstracts from external sources you link to
I was wondering if a page (a blog post, for example) that offers links to external web pages along with abstracts from these pages would be considered duplicate content page and therefore penalized by Google. For example, I have a page that has very little original content (just two or three sentences that summarize or sometimes frame the topic) followed by five references to different external sources. Each reference contains a title, which is a link, and a short abstract, which basically is the first few sentences copied from the page it links to. So, except from a few sentences in the beginning everything is copied from other pages. Such a page would be very helpful for people interested in the topic as the sources it links to had been analyzed before, handpicked and were placed there to enhance user experience. But will this format be considered duplicate or near-duplicate content?

Sponsoredreviews.com , anyone ever used it?
I came across this site http://www.sponsoredreviews.com/, thought its idea was a place were you can offer your product to be reviewed by bloggers, (fairly white hat I would have thought), I had a quick look and it seemed to me its for for selling back links on blogs, but before I dismissed it completely I just wanted to see if anyone else had any experience with it? Update: if this website is no good, are there any genuine places were you can offer you products for review?

Google Penguin w/ Meta Keywords
It's getting really hard filtering through the Penguin articles flying around right now so excuse me if this has been addressed: I know that Google no longer uses the meta keywords as indicators (VERY old news). But I'm just wondering if they are starting to look at them as a bigger spam indicator since Penguin is looking at over-optimization. If yes, has anyone read good article indicating so? The reason I ask is because I have two websites, one is authoritative and the other… not so much. Recently my authoritative website has taken a dip in rankings, a significant dip. The non-authoritative one has increased in rankings… by a lot. Now, the authoritative website pages that use meta-keywords seem to be the ones that are having issues… so it really has me wondering. Both websites compete with each other and are fairly similar in their offerings. I should also mention that the meta-keywords were implemented a long time ago… before I took over the account. Also important to note, I never purchase links and never practice any spammy techniques. I am as white hat as it gets which has me really puzzled as to why one site dropped drastically.
