800 number on website
-
Hi,
My client just sent me an 800 number that he would like to use to replace his number on the website. I know that it is best to keep a local phone number on the website and across all citations for NAP/Local SEO reasons.
Is there anywhere that I could still incorporate the 800 number and not have it affect SEO?
Thanks,
Erin

Hi Erin, Thanks for clarifying. Technically, this should not cause a problem for Google, but because of their history of issues with phone number confusion, when I'm optimizing a Local site, I put the 800 number in image text only. I don't include it in real text. I guess you could say I take a better-safe-than-sorry approach, just to avoid possible hassles down the road.

Miriam,
I am aware that it should be on the google listing. In this case, I am referring to the website. In other words, if the local number is at the top-right of the page, I would list the toll free number below with 'toll free' labeled as an option for the user. The toll free number would also be placed below the NAP in the footer of the page.
Thanks,
Erin

Hi Erin,
Do you mean add your toll free number to your website, or to your Google listing? If the first, what do you mean by adding it 'below' the local number? Where on the site? If the latter, yes, you are allowed to list a toll free number.

Miriam,
Thanks for the comment.
What about if I add the 888 number below the local number. Will this cause confusion with the search engines?
Thanks,
Erin

Hi Erin,
Chris' advice is exactly what I would have given. Go ahead and add the 800 number to the masthead of the website or elsewhere in image text. Just be sure that the indexable text on the website features the local number, and be sure that this local number is the one being used on all of the client's citations. Consistency is king in Local SEO. -
yes. That would work, just to keep with NAP consistency. You don't even necessarily need to put in numbers in the alt-text. If the alt attribute is just text like it says "call in line for Joe's pawn shop" google wouldn't get confused. Then any screen reader would pick up the phone number you left in the footer for the person using it.

Interesting suggestion... so the image would display the 800 number, but the alt-text would have the other (NAP) number?
Thanks!

I would consider putting it an image with an alt attribute of"phone number for X" , then putting that in the header or somewhere very noticeable. Then still maintain the regular phone number in the footer or somewhere unnoticeable.People will most likely never notice the second phone number

There is a copy of our website that is ranking. How can I let Google know our website is the authentic site?
I just found another copy of my old website and have no way to take it down. Unfortunately, it's ranking so he didn't place it as a nofollow. (My boss hired someone to redevelop our website before I came on board and never finished the project). So, could this be hurting us? I tried to look to see if we were being penalized and couldn't find that we were. Also, ever since we migrated to a new domain name, our ranking is tumbling. I've redirected properly and tested to make sure they're resolving correctly and they are. I have no idea what is going on. We've virtually lost all ranking. Any help would be much appreciated.

Phone number for SEO
We have had an interesting question from a client. They have asked if removing their phone number from their website would have an affect on their rankings. Our immediate answer was 'No' but it may affect the Brand, Usability and Customer experience by restricting the methods of contact. This then made us think that perhaps then it could have an effect in the long term. This situation is also complicated by the fact that they do not have a Google Local Plus account for operational, sensitivity reasons (they don't want to openly publicise their address) We believe that there shouldn't be any negative affect but thought we would open a discussion. Thanks in advance for any comments/ideas.

Website view diffrent in Chrome than FireFox and IE
Hi everyone, I have a quick question about our WordPress webpage InternetNearMe.com/xfinity-Internet. The site is still a work in progress, but I'm starting to notice that when viewing the page in FireFox or Internet explorer, there is a large white space at the top of the page that is not there when you view it in Chrome. This is most likely because we used to have two graphics in that space that we have since removed. I cleared the Cache hoping that would solve problem but it has not. i've included screenshots of the different browsers below. Any suggestions? Thank you! CHROME

Internal Linking From Blog to Website
Hi all, I'm just seeking opinions on something an external company have told us about linking from our blog to our website... Our website is; www.XYZ.com and our blog is www.XYZ.com/blog I add content to the blog on an almost daily basis and generally link on average 3 times from the blog (internally) to a various relevant pages on our website. Today I was told that by doing this I am 'diluting' the link juice which I understand but don't agree with... All I am doing is a form of internal linking which as far as I am aware is a good on-page technique? Just curious to learn other people's view on this... Many thanks Andy

What is the best way to integrate our blog into our ecommerce website?
Hi all, We run an eCommerce website at www.oursite.com plus a blog (including news / articles / reviews / how-to guides etc.) at blog.oursite.com (those aren't really our site URLs, BTW ;-). For SEO reasons previously discussed on here, and for ease of use for our customers / browsers, we now want to integrate the two more closely. This will mean: Our blog will move to www.oursite.com/blog We will try to feature the blog content in places where it is relevant to customers (so e.g. news and blog posts about shoes would appear on our shoes category page, a review of some Adidas XL1000 shoes would appear on the Adidas XL1000 shoes product page) The blog is currently run on a wordpress.com site, so we'll need a new CMS (or wordpress.org) to get more control of the data. My issues are that, although it's good from a users point of view, having blog articles appear in lots of different places on the site might cause issues with duplicate content from a search engine's point of view. Has anyone got any pointers on how to integrate the two in a way that will make most use of the good original content coming out of our blog, while not "watering it down" by spreading it around too much? Can anyone point to examples of shops that do this well? Is there any software (other than Wordpress) that people would recommend using? As always, any help greatly appreciated! Alex
