Site Wide Link Situation
-
Hi-
We have clients who are using an e-commerce cart that sits on a separate domain that appears to be providing site wide links to our clients websites. Therefore, would you recommend disallowing the bots to crawl/index these via a robots.txt file, a no follow meta tag on the specific pages the shopping cart links are implemented on or implement no follow links on every shopping cart link? Thanks!
-
Hi! Thanks! I completely understand. We would never want to prevent URLs on the client's domain from being crawled. That could clearly put our client's online presence at risk. However, we're more concerned with Google noticing the shopping cart's domain is pointing to every page of the client's website which could appear unnatural & potentially, put the client's site at risk. What we're hoping to achieve is preventing from Google crawling the third party URL on every page to avoid any penalization.

Rez you gotta consider a few things.
When looked at the site structure and AI of your site you have to think about the Juice flow as a funnel. More Juice to the top distributed less juice to the bottom. So for shopping cart pages or product pages ( depending on how deep they are ), i usually incorporate Long tail , targeted keywords ( ie: Mimi Juie baby sippy cups ) where the volume is not much but its targeted enough that even with a limited juice flow you can rank.
My initial suggestion to you was to contact the person or company that built the shopping cart in order to remove the link. ( THAT IS MY FIRST OPTION ). I would not do a no follow to the product page. ( dont do anything crazy like that ) Specially if you have Share bar options for your products and reviews etc. ( you will lose all that ) .
LAST OPTION for you should be to do a robot.txt to ONLY that link, NOT the page.
Again please understand you should not DEVALUE your page like that .
Hope this helps.
Let me know how it turns out

Hi-
Thanks for the feedback! So the robots.txt is the best way?
The shopping cart's URL does not have much authority so it's not important for us to get the link juice from the separate domain which is why we're debating how to implement a no follow. Do you see any harm in doing so?
Thanks,
Rez

Rez.
You should be able to remove that sitewide link from your shopping cart. I had a similar situation with a joomla site i did that had a sitewide link situation on the product page of JoomShopping and you can purchase to remove it. Unfortunately thats the way it is. Take a look at the help files or forums of the shopping cart site. What shopping cart is it?
If you cannot remove it, then robots.txt is the best way i would NOT do a no follow to that page. Unless you dont care about the data or care about getting ranked for those pages. But you are saying its site wide.
So i am a little confused on that.
Hope it helps.
Best Wishes,

If I use links intag instead of "ahref" tag can Google read links inside div tag?
Hi All, Need a suggestion on it. For buttons, I am using links in tag instead of "ahref". Do you know that can Google read links inside "div" tag? Does it pass rank juice? It will be great if you can provide any reference if possible.

Now adding articles related to my money website on those blogs newly created & building links from them. Then drip feeding them by putting 1 article a month at regular intervals with anchor as links in each of them. Do you think its a good move?

Is it Wortwhile to have a HTML site map for a Large Site
We are a large, enterprise site with many pages (some on our CMS and some old pages that exist outside our CMS). Every month we submit various an XML site map. Some pages on our site can no longer be found via following links from one page to another (orphan pages). Some of those pages are important and some not. Is it worth our while to create a HTML site map? Does any one have any recent stats or blog posts to share, showing how a HTML site map may have benefited a large site. Many thanks

Recovering from a site migration
Hi. I've been working on http://www.alwayshobbies.com/ for a number of months. All was fine, but then we had a site migration which involved a huge number of redirects. There's been a couple of similar moves in the past. As a result, rankings have plummeted. To resolve this, we're considering letting all the old pages 404 by turning of the redirects, and removing all links to them where we can. Some key pages could have canonicals added, but basically we're looking to purge as much as possible. Does this sound like a reasonable tactic?

.GOV Link - same impact on my site's rankings whether link to home or Gov related category?
I own a job site and I am about to get a link from a .GOV. My site has a category called "State Jobs". Should I ask the ".Gov" to link to my homepage or to the state job page and use the anchor text "State Jobs". I understand "State Jobs" page would get a big kick by that being the anchor text and linking to that specific page, but the question I have is this: for my site as a whole (homepage and various categories) would they get around the same "push up" whether the linking is to 1) my homepage with anchor text being my site's name or 2) to the state job specific page and in this case the anchor text would be "State Jobs"? thank you

Do nofollow links affect link profile?
I've read that it's good to keep a natural link profile. Some naked links, some links going to our company name, some with anchor text, etc. Do nofollow links affect this link profile, or is it only followed links that are taken into account?

Should I change site link structure? Will that make things worse?
I've got an Exact Match Domain that has just started to do well in Google for say the past year. I've always received good rankings from Bing and Yahoo but I love the traffic levels that Google sends. Long story short on the 25th according to webmaster tools, my impressions on their search engine have been destroyed. No problems, not de-indexed, just not showing my site anymore. I like this site and have been careful, built some links and the anchor text is suspect but also not suspect because its the same as the domain. What I feel the problem may be is the site structure. I set it up a long time ago like this: Exact-Match-keyword. com/ Exact-match-keyword.php/state I thought it looked kinda spammy at the time but also thought it may help. Now I'm wondering if I shorten all the page titles to the state name and 301 the old links if I will regain rankings, or if I may lose some from other search engines. I used to think Penguins were cute......

On-Site Optimization Tips for Job site?
I am working on a job site that only ranks well for the homepage with very low ranking internal pages. My job pages do not rank what so ever and are database driven and often times turn to 404 pages after the job has been filled. The job pages have to no content either. Anybody have any technical on-site recommendations for a job site I am working on especially regarding my internal pages? (Cross Country Allied.com)
