Client Can't Write His Own Articles

Hello,
I'm helping a client put together an FAQ and 5 thorough, graphically stimulating, articles.
The client can easily write his FAQ articles.
However, he's not knowledgeable enough to write the 5 thorough articles, and hiring an expert to write them from scratch would cost a huge chunk of money.
Should we have a writer put together an outline or rough draft and present that to the expert for editing? The client can afford that. Or what's the best way to move forward without costing a huge amount of money?

I see companies run into this all the time, and it gets me as well. The question is "How do I differentiate myself or my client from everyone else out there?"
You can still cover the same topics as the competition, but put your (client's) own spin on things. I think it's time to define some strategy - who is he targeting, and how does he want to interact with that group? Is he a young, hip guy? An older pillar of the community? That's where to start. Once you get those two aspects down, then the writer will have something to base the content off of, and you all can jointly develop a brand and tone.

I agree with you on the way to produce top content. I agree that not everyone can - but we need to do what's best for our clients and that's not always going to be the theoretically "perfect" answer.

I just realized what we were doing wrong, I'd like some feedback. We were going to go after the informational side of the client's ecommerce site where we have very little experience. I think we need to be unique and draw on the client's strengths. A little bit of those informational side articles would be good, but everyone in this industry is already providing that information really well. I think we need to focus on the client's products themselves, and the client has more experience with that than almost anyone.

That's a very price-conscious way to go. If I'm understanding this it would cost about 10 times less than EGOL's method. However, I very highly respect EGOL's methods. It's a bit confusing since you're an authority.
David, could you explain when it's important, in your opinion, to hire a content writer that's an expert in his field as we are planning on doing and when it's appropriate to simply go back and forth between the client and a good writer. Keep and mind that the client doesn't know everything about the topic in this case and the good writer that we have contacted will pull everything off of every credible piece of the web she can find.
In our case the content writer we could afford would be the right graduate student at an accredited university. Maybe that's not good enough, I don't know

I think that if you go out on the web and look at who is producing "best on the web" content.... less than 10% of small businesses are participants.

This answer completely eliminates at least 70% of small businesses from creating great content. There are always ways. We do SEO profitably at a level that you would not even talk to the client. It's all about the goals.
The question posed is "what's the best way to move forward without costing a huge amount of money" and you say "there isn't." 99% of the content on the net isn't written by a team of 6 people taking 10 days to write 500 words. Hiring a professional copywriter is a LOT better than writing it yourself, hiring a content expert is a great choice when the budget allows. In everyone's "perfect world" this is a great answer - but here in the real world, you have to make some choices. It's not "squandering" your money if you're putting out the professional content in your niche because everyone else is writing it themselves.
Of course, you'd never hire a single general copywriter to write technical manuals on computer systems they don't understand. But to write some articles for a small business? C'mon.

I don't think that I would hire a "copywriter" where a "content expert" is needed... and at the same time a "content expert" might not be the best person to write the copy.
I think that a collaboration between them might yield a "start" at a good article if the copywriter is pliable and the content expert has a lot of patience.
The process will take an awful lot more time than a content expert who is able to write effectively.
Missing in the mix still is a source of photos, images, data tables and graphs that clearly illustrate the topic.
A lot of the best content on the web requires several days of work from multiple people - for a couple thousand words with images.

The few people who are willing to pay the price will get the rewards and the people who try to compete on the cheap will squander their money.

It depends what is a "huge amount of money" I guess.
We get our in-house copywriter at a great rate. She is a talented writer we found on Twitter. We charge her out at $10 per 100 words so if you wanted 5, 500 word articles, it would cost $250. That's middle-level pricing. Super expensive would be hiring a full time copywriter who knows what they're worth for a half day. Could be $600-1000 easily. I have one we use sometimes for big jobs b/c she knows what those clients want. On the other end, you could easily get someone on Fiverr to write the 5 articles for $25 but you will need to edit them and pretty them up. It just depends whether their structure would work for you. Also, you could probably find someone to go the other way - present an outline and have them do the writing bits and then you just edit again based on that.
Other than Fiverr, other low cost places to get writers (high chaff ratio though) are oDesk, Elance and Guru.

A client rebranded a few years ago and doesn't want to be associated with it's old brand name. He wishes not to appear when the old brand is searched in Google, is there something we can do?
The problem is there was redirection between the old branded site and the new one, and now when you type in the name of the old brand, the new one comes up. I have desperately tried to convince this client there is nothing we can do about it, dozens of news articles crop up with the two brands together as this was a hot topic a few years ago, but just in case I missed something I thought I'd ask the community of experts here on Moz. An example for this would be Tyco Healthcare that became covidien in 2007. When you type tyco healthcare, covidien crops up here and there. Any ideas? Thanks!

Article page canonicalization
Hey there, A client rents all kinds of party articles, like plates, bowles, etc. Currently, al his article pages have canonicals to their parent category pages, supposedly to have any pagevalue flow to these category pages, (which are much more relevant for SEO). Is there anyone who agrees with this method? I think a noindex,follow would be a better measure to prevent Google from accessing all these 'low value' article pages. Besides, a canonical should indicate that page A and B are (almost) identical, which they most certainly are not in this case. What are your thoughts?

Can't generate a sitemap with all my pages
I am trying to generate a site map for my site nationalcurrencyvalues.com but all the tools I have tried don't get all my 70000 html pages... I have found that the one at check-domains.com crawls all my pages but when it writes the xml file most of them are gone... seemingly randomly. I have used this same site before and it worked without a problem. Can anyone help me understand why this is or point me to a utility that will map all of the pages? Kindly, Greg

Title tags seem to be going against Rand and suggestions here, what can I do? Can you help me please?
Hi to all, Ok so I have been beating myself up trying to figure out how to create a good ranking title for my websites homepage. My competition uses commas in its title tags But these are 100% against what Rand and many posts say here. I watched his whiteboard where he says don't use commas. There are posts that say, don't use commas. The biggest one is mortonbuildings(dot)com - followed by - lesterbuildings(dot)com They basically have the same title tags with commas. So what's the catch here? What am I missing? of course these sites have Great Domain Authority, but I swear what they are doing is going against what Rand and many other seo professional's are preaching. I thought it should read better for visitors? But to me it looks like keyword stuffing with a brand name? Any help is greatly appreciated to let me know if these commas and strategies are good to do? or bad news? Again thank you for your time to help a small business. Chris

How much risk would there be with this 'repeating of a sentence' situation?
Hello, A business owner and design decision was made on a published article page to have a summary sentence/paragraph placed prominently with a unique font treatment in the article header along with the article's main imagery. Historical content that does not have this summary migrated with "the first sentence of the article" used for this introduction/summary sentence/paragraph. In both cases, where there is a unique summary and where the first sentence is used, the article text normally begins below a graphical element below the summary element. Thus, when the first sentence was used for the summary, the first sentence will repeat, relatively close together on each page where this happens. The question is: How much risk would i be taking on in allowing the first sentence of these articles to get repeated in close proximity on the page. Can some brilliant mozzer out there teach a moron/newbie like me how to 301 redirect several URL's I have?
Okay - I am a supermodel. I look pretty. My legs are amazing. My cheekbones are high. But when it comes to 301 redirects I am the ugliest supermodel on the block. I have inherited several sites from a friend and I have been helping by creating solid contextual links internally and externally for a while. But, when Roger the wondrous SEOMoz robot talks to me, he says, "oops, it looks like your foolish freak self has a site that has both a www. and a non-www, which can create competition for yourself." What do I do when he says that? I just whisper a "thank-you" but gently press the skip this step button and go on with my life because I do not know how to make my non-www.'s redirect into the www. sites... Now, I have sort of asked this question on the site before, but I was answered by someone who does not understand my level of ignorance. any use of the word canonical or just put this lfwjkshj.htp/php inside the left ear of your mom, does not tell me anything so, is there any willing and kind soul who can walk me through redirecting several of my sites to their proper home - kind of like Carl Chubbs Weathers did for Happy Gilmore in that Academy Award winning classic? How many articles should I write per day & how many backlinks should I get per day to be natural!
hey.. I"m working in review blog one day per 1 or 2 weeks and I post up to 6 articles one time; is it unnatural for SEO ? how many articles should I post in blog per day? another question..how many backlinks should I get to just one post? I'm using Magic Submitter software to get help but I don't get more than 50 backlinks one time..what's real number of backlinks should I get and for how much time to be 100% natural for Google? any helpful info about backlinks techniques worth to hear..thnx
