Google to devalue guest blog links?
-
There's a lot of talk at the minute about google possible devaluing guest post links. I wondered what people thought of this and whether it is likely to happen? If it does happen then how will google identify 'spam' guest posts and links?
I guess it's fair to assume that if the post is well written, autoriative and adds value to a site with a knoweldgable perspective then it will be counted? It can be very hard to define how google will define a 'quality guest post'? Any ideas?

If the same article is published on many different websites and it has multiple text links pointing at a website and that website has lots of other articles that are published on many different websites with multiple text links pointing back... then the site runs a risk if being hit with a Panda problem.
It does not matter if you call it a guest post or article syndication or something else, and the links don't necessarily need to be devalued. The content could have been written by Mark Twain or a Pulitzer Prize winner... its the pattern that causes the problem.

This often crops up and I wonder whether it's associated with scaremongering or a witch-hunt.
Google will not blanket devalue guest blog links. It will devalue crap.
If it's on a crap website, then the link will be devalued - just as they were on article sites and directories. Google can understand the quality of a website fairly well, and so should the user.
If it's a crap guest post, then you can presume that Google will devalue it. The algorithm's ability to interpret quality may still be in question, but there's a lot of evidence to suggest that its working towards identifying content, context and relevancy a lot more - so make sure your posts have it.
That's all there is to it. Guest posting is still one of the best ways to drive traffic and build links, provided that your content is worth reading. If it's simply rubbish or posted on spammy sites, then it's going to be penalised. I don't understand why people think it's "very hard" to identify a quality guest post - it isn't for you or me, and it's the human aspect that Google is trying to replicate in its algorithm.
A crusade against all guest posts? Not gonna happen. I wouldn't give it a moments more thought - instead, I'd concentrate on producing quality pieces of content that people will want to read, share and link to.

Hi. One of our competitors is ranking ahead of us on Google. Our site has a much stronger authority and much more quality links than this competitor. Would anyone have any explanations for this? Thanks
Hi Guys - I've noticed recently that one of our competitors is ranking extremely well on Google, while we seem to be fluctuating, along with other competitors, for our main keywords. Our site has a much stronger authority and much more quality links than this competitor and traffic is continuously increasing each month. Would anyone have any explanations as to why we may be seeing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Am I better off with ten links from one site or one link from ten sites?
I am writing a series of linked-back articles for a highly-ranked web publisher, but wonder if I'd be better off sharing the articles across different sites. My goal is to grow our domain authority and SEO rankings.

Do any presentation sites, Slideshare, Google Slides, HaikuDeck offer great SEO links?
I do a lot of public speaking and normally upload my slides somewhere so people can access later. With most sites I can upload to Slideshare or similar, then embed into my own site. I do it for audience convenience, but it would be swell to get an SEO bump.

Guest blogging: is there a safe way to do it?
Following Google's nuking of My Blog Guest, is there any way of doing (high-quality, small-scale) guest posting safely? Specifically, do the tips from Neil Patel here (written Jan 22) still stand up? Only post on relevant blogs – ideally these blogs should also be larger than your website. In other words, do it because it will help with branding, traffic, and sales. Posting on bigger blogs that are also relevant will provide you with more good exposure than posting on small, unknown blogs. Avoid using rich anchor text – rich anchor text will become a huge red flag and will probably cause your site to get penalized eventually, especially if you are building these links through guest posts. Share the love – you won’t be able to link out to your site only. From Wikipedia to your competitors, you’ll have to link out to whichever site benefits the reader the most. Build up your author rank – with Google Plus becoming more popular, it will be easier for Google to determine how good of a writer you are. So, you’ll have to focus on publishing only valuable content as you won’t want crap tied to your author account. Co-citations are valuable – even if you don’t get a link from a guest post, just having your site mentioned in the article can help with rankings. I think Google will place more emphasis on co-citations in 2014.

Many competitor's backlinks are in content anchor links. Ho do I get these same links?
Hi I managed to open up OSE. I'm finding that much of the competition's backlinks are in content anchor text links. Am I supposed to get backlinks from these same pages using the same anchor text but linking back to my page or is that allowed? If so, how do I get these in content blog post links? Thanks. Sunil.
