What price should you pay for seo services

A friend of mine has a business site and he has said to me that he has been receiving a number of emails with regards to seo services.
He is seriously thinking about using a company to help him as he does not have the time to promote his site and get it in the top of the search engines.
Last week he asked me what price should he be paying for a small business site and to be honest i could not give him an answer as i have never used a company who deal with seo before.
A lot of the emails he has received are from India, and i would like to know what is involved, do they need access inside your site and what price is a good price to pay.
Normally i would have told him to learn seo himself but due to the lack of time he has i can understand why he needs a company to help him
any help would be good

I'll echo the first 2 responses - don't hire a tele/email marketing "SEO company." Google's webmaster guidelines should give you a good idea of what kind of questions you should be asking an SEO. Check this out ... and ask the questions, if they're a real SEO they will appreciate that you care enough to ask.....
Be very wary of companies that only talk about "links/link-building," and not on-site optimization. I have a few clients who before hiring me, were paying SEO companies $500-$1000 a month for "link building" - and the only thing they have to show for it is a bunch of automated comment and article spam. - (these links are useless/harmful)....

Thank you for this, i will let him know to ignore the emails and to look out for seo companies. I personally block most of the spam and did say to him that a lot of people out there promise the world.

Don't hire a SEO from spam emails is my first suggestion. I would ask around these forums and look for someone who has a lot of moz points and is respected in the community.
Cost is hard to say, it depends on the size of the site, the platform and the amount of technical issues that need to be fixed. He could hire someone for an SEO recommendations document and then implement the changes himself, that's the cheapest way to go.

I will leave you with one piece of advice. My number one rule for finding an SEO company is this: You find the good guys; the bad guys find you. In other words, do NOT respond to those solicitations from India. Go out and do some research.

What Can I Do To Improve The SEO of My Site?
We have a website that is ranking okay but we can't seem to get past #6 or #7 for a specific national keyword, "self storage software". We are working on a more effective back-linking strategy right now, but we really are having a hard time identifying steps to take besides that. If anyone can help me out and give me some suggestions I would be very appreciative. Maybe even seeing a competitive analysis from someone else would help catch something that I am not seeing. SEO impact classifieds website
Hi, I'm part of an organization running a classifieds platform in Spain. (Mercadonline.es) We are hit by Google penalties since a few weeks, possibly caused by numerous errors we are experiencing. Most frequent errors are 404's and duplicate content (titles tags etc) since the nature of our website is dynamic. Many ads change daily, are added or removed, causing Googlebots (and others) to flag us and not being able to see our more unique content. Until what part of our platform should we be indexed? Since we have +34,000 pages indexed (mostly due to internal filter pages) I would need a systematic solution for us to display relevant and unique content, with enough usage of keywords that can bring us back up - we are actually ranked <50 on google for most of our main keywords. It is costing us precious time and money since we can only aquire our visitors (adwords etc) and not being to attract any organically. I can go in more detail with someone who can give me a bit more direction. Your answer is much appreciated! Ivor

Changing menus regularly - will this impact SEO
We are working on an internal project, where the website owner is thinking of making regular changes to one or two items on the top level menu. Assuming they redirect the original pages or navigate to them in other ways, is there any other impact on SEO to changing the menu structure? I assume they'd submit new sitemaps after each change. Pagination and SEO: How do I fix it during search parameters?
Today, I have watched very interesting video on YouTube about Pagination and SEO. I have implemented pagination with rel="next" and rel="prev" on my paginated page. Restaurant menu SEO: PDF or HTML?
Is it better to use a PDF or hard code restaurant menus (or any document for that matter) in HTML? I want the content to be indexed and thought PDF was the way to go for several reasons, but I wanted to get confirmation on this before I move forward.
