Keyword Selection - Long Tail or not long tail keyword
-
Hi Friends,
We have a keyword "plus size clothing" but we used this as "plus size clothing 2012" to Cover the both keywords "Plus size clothing" and "Plus size clothing 2012"
My question is, are we still focusing on "plus size clothing" when use "plus size clothing 2012" instead of the main keyword.?
What strategy do yo suggest that when to use long tail and when to not.
(when I talk to use a long tail than it means use it prominently on the page as main keyword should be used.)

Don't create a page per key term please. Only create pages per intention. In your case, does the page you want to rank [plus sized clothing "xxxx"] match the intent of the searcher for that term? And is the same page as relevant for [plus sized clothing]. Are you the best answer for both terms? Is that page the best answer for both terms?
I don't want to sound negative but I highly doubt that. If you sell plus sized clothing on the national level, your homepage is probably the best page. If you are going for new styles in 2012, that should be a different page with just those styles. If you are a store or collection of stores in Boston, then [Boston plus sized clothing] is more your term.
Now after all of that, do know that typically using a broader term in addition to some modifiers is perfectly fine if it makes sense for the page. Don't take that too far, don't key word stuff your title tags or content. Know your keywords, use them, but don't abuse them. Talk to people, don't market to them.

+1 what safor web design said. When using a long tail keyword, you covering a multitude of short keyword phrases that you could eventually end up ranking well for.
Long tail keyword phrase Ex: Plus size clothing New York City
Shorter keyword phrase ex: Plus size clothing, plus size clothing New York, Clothing New York, City Clothing, Plus size city clothing, plus clothing, size clothing, clothing
Obviously, some of the short keyword phrases may not have much ranking power like size clothing, but nevertheless, look at all the possibilities you can have for ranking off just one long tail keyword phrase?
I think its win win situation.
-
Short keyphrases are more difficult to rank because a lot of bussiness are ranking with them: Ej: "Rent Car" is more difficult to rank than "Rent Car NY" because at the 2º option, you compete "only" at NY City, but at 1º option, you compete with every city, town...
So, if you choose long tail terms, you can get firsts ranking positions easily, increase the traffic to your site, and maybe in few months, if you increase your PR/AR... you can compete for short keyphrases with big sites for shorters keyphrases.
P.D: Sorry about my english is a little rusty
-
@Safor web Design You are right that long tail keywords are often rank better than the short one and good option to start ranking.
But in which situation we should go for main keyword (short one) instead of long tail, because long tail keywords are easy to optimize but not as fruitful as short one.
What you say?
@Alan yes 2012 is not seem good with this keywords but used with many other keywords, I used 2012 here for example.
(I repeat my question In Economics language )
Is there any Opportunity cost between the Long tail and Short keywords?
-
The short answer is yes, you are optimizing for both, but as Safor suggests, 2012 is not the best keyword, i would do as safor suggests and use city name instead
-
Hi alexgray
Long tail keywords are very useful. Usually, they often rank better than short keywords, and are a good option to start ranking.
2021 doesn´t seem an useful keyword, because Google rank firstly recently creation. So it isn't necessary that keyword. I'll use a city name better.
To avoid duplicate content, you must create new content for each new keyphrase, or indicate with canonical wich one is the most important landing.
I hope it can help you.

Can we put long-tail keywords at footer menu and create landing pages for same?
When we cannot rank for multiple keywords; can we try creating landing pages for some long-tail keywords and put all such landing pages at footer menu to rank for search queries? Will this helps and sound spammy to Google?

How long does Google take to completely authorise 301 redirect?
Will 301 redirect will have immediate impact once the website or that redirected link got indexed? We have recently redirected few links in the process of link reclamation and ranking dropped few days later. Every link we claimed is related to our topic (matched in content and URL) and they have good DA. Even though why it has happened? What are the general rank dropping factors in the process of link reclamation? Thanks, Satish

Traffic and keyword drop
Hello, On one of the sites that I manage - http://www.zalikihotel.gr/ , there was a significant decrease in keyword positions over the last 10-15 days. Sample screenshot is attached. Some of the keywords even dropped for 17-18 positions. From the end of April, organic traffic dropped by 30 percent. Website is mobile optimized, so that shouldn't be a problem. In the last 3-4 months, we had traffic increase. Domain authority went up by 3 points after the last index. On-site SEO was completed, and currently I'm focusing on link-building and working on bringing back to life forgotten social media. Does anybody knows what might be the case for this negative affects on our site? Do you think it's a temporary fluctuation or not? Thanks in advance. 8dSBELm.png?1

What Constitutes Keyword Stuffing?
Greeting MOZ Community: I have been attempting to add certain keywords phrases to the home page text of our real estate web site (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com). When I check the keyword density and look at the keyword cloud, the frequency of certain terms appear substantially higher than they should be (see attached keyword cloud and keyword density chart. Certain terms like "office space" have a 5 or 6% frequency which seems high. Last thing we need is a Panda penalty. When I viewed the code for the home page (see enclosed), I noticed HREF tags, SRE tags and ALT tags repeating certain keyword phrases, driving up their density. I have attached a keyword cloud for the home page of a competitor and the use of language seems more diverse. Does Google take the text in these various tags into account? I know the ALT tag is important for SEO, but how about the others? Does the use of text in the tags for this page make the overall page look spammy? Also, there are text and tags for the carousel in the home page that appear in the code for the home page. If this code were somehow concealed, would we be better off from an SEO perspective? Thanks, Alan pkM7CZG 1DFFMZ0

Will buying a competitor negatively affect keyword ranking?
Hello All; After reading a lot of great info on Moz, I wanted to ask my first question. We are thinking about buying a competitor. It is a smaller ecommerce site that sells a subset of the products we already sell. The main value of the site is good ranking for a small set of keywords. For example, if we acquire this site, we would now have up to 4 listing on page 1 for some targeted keywords. We plan to operate the site separately from our own with its current name and technology. We plan to be transparent with the domain registration info, change the contact info on the new site, etc. Will the fact that both sites are owned by the same company negatively affect keyword rankings? Instead of having 4 listings for some terms will one of our sites be lowered since one company operates both sites? The site we are buying does not have a high MozRank, MozTrust or Domain Authority score. But it does have a domain that has been around for a long time. In addition to the keywords, there is value is using this new site to do marketing tests and experiment a bit. Thanks for any input. Paul

I have a website that targets national keywords. I would like to be able to rank locally for these keywords as well without having the city in the title. What is the best strategy for this?
