How long does it take for Google to recognize your link-building efforts with authority websites and affect the SERPS?

As pointed out it depends, on a variety of factors. It can take hrs or either months for Google to crawl something. One thing that we always suggest is that you can use social signals, in particular Google+, on the page that has the link to get it crawled faster.
For example if you are a gun company, and you want the link that you got on NY Times to be crawled faster tweet out the NY Times article.

It's an ongoing process and depends partially on the authority of the sites you are getting links from.
Google has to recrawl the page that the link was placed on, then bake that into their algo for ranking, so if the links are on pages that Google crawls often, it will get counted sooner.

The strength of the link does depend on the page that it is on. So, if the home page did have more authority, then it would have a larger impact.

Ahhh,
So this might be kind of a dumb question but does the page that your link shows up on affect the strength of the Referral. For example ( We just got a "do follow" link on a National Association website with major link juice. Our link is not on the homepage but it is on a sub-domain. If it were on the homepage would it have made a bigger affect ?)

It can be as little as a few hours to as much as a couple months. It depends on the popularity of the specific page which contains the link, along with the number and quality of links pointed to that page.

Best Methods - Link Building
We are having more and more "new" customers coming to us who have been hit by various algorithms imposed by google. After we have run a site health check and corrected everything, we plan and come up with a link development plan which suits the clients needs. Much of out link development work is safe comprising of; 1. Guest Blog Posts - where we develop creative content with the customer to publish. 2. Industry blog posts - where bloggers write about i.e. "the company" 3. Social media - posting pictures, commenting on forums, etc 4. Paid directories with authority We don't develop links in any other way and it brings results in the long term. Is anyone out there doing something else? Is anyone using Pinterest for link building?
They have dofollow links and I have read somewhere that every repin will be counted as a new link. Is this true?

I noticed another SEO builds backlinks (tons) on a social media profile that then has a link to his client's site. Another site he builds backlinks are a bitly account that 301's to the clients account. Why would you do this? Is it that you can build links indiscriminately to build a page up in PR to 3-4-5 PR, then pass that higher PR to your site (safe). Is that PR building method better than placing 100's of smaller PR links on your site? It seems logical that if you passed in a tremendous amount of juice to juice a site up to PR4, you won't make your main site PR4 by JUST that link. You would need to build a lot of PR4 sites to make your site PR4. Why not just put all the backlinks on the main page instead of building up secondary social profiles etc... Please reveal this secret. I know a lot of SEOs are using this method. Help 🙂

What are your favorite link building tools?
I know there are a bunch out there, but I'd love to hear your guys thoughts. The more tools you post, and the more unknown they are (i.e. everyone knows OSE, Raven Tools, Buzzstream, Ontolo, etc.), the more I'd love the answer. Also, it doesn't have to be a comprehensive tool. Even if it's a bookmarklet, or something that solves one specific tedious task, I'd love to hear about it! 🙂

Google Webmaster Tools - assessing inbound links
Hello, I am terribly confused by Google Webmaster Tools. I am looking at my inbound links, to see which content on the site is strongest. However, the results from GWT under Links to your site, and the results from doing a link: search in Google yield very different results! For example, in GWT, this page on our site apparently 2237 links from 29 different domains. But when I search link:www.nigelsecostore.com/acatalog/Eco_Stapler.html, I get just three results, two of which are from our site. What is the cause of the disparity between the two results, or is it just my (lack of) understanding of what I am seeing in the Links to your site report in GWT? What are some of your best tips, strategies or resources for link building?
I currently work for a contract manufacturing company so when I think about building links it seems as if it's going to be a daunting task. Mainly because any kind of content that you can come up with is rather dry. When I go about searching for links I usually run into a lot of directories that charge anywhere between $25-$50 for a listing. I've had a hard time convincing marketing that we should start a blog which may be a good way to build some links if we come up with quality posts but those posts may be few and far inbetween. Does anybody have any recommendations for building links for this type of company or subject matter? Also, and I'm sure we have all heard this. When I mentioned the fact that we should be building some quality links to the site marketing first asked why and then commented "Well that shouldn't take you too long". Why is it so difficult to get management to accept the fact that managing a website is an ongoing and constantly changing process that involves research and experimentation?
