Should I put on a black hat and abuse Rich Snippet ?
-
What do people think about abusing rich snippets?
I have a competitor who has started using the author tag on product pages. I guess this will be giving them an unfair advantage in the SERP. I had considered doing the same but was a bit worried about getting banned in the future.
Should we go down the same path and is it likely that Google will eventually hit us with a ban?
-
Good work Cyto.
-
Cyto, I don't get any of the structured data in Bing/Yahoo. At least in Google, I get the star ratings.
Just as an FYI, I also don't see the image in the Rich Snippets Structured Data Testing Tool, although I've been over and over the specs for the images, and the code (at least to my knowledge) is correct. This, along with other posts that I've read elsewhere, tells me that Google simply hasn't implemented the image aspect of the code yet.
-
Okay some findings.
Been reading this blog entry by cpcstrategy.com and they have a great example
Take the keyphrase "Nike Men's Air Rival golf shoes overstock", now search on Google, Bing and Yahoo
As you can see, Yahoo displays a product image. It seems each search engine has it's own way of displaying content.
Gentlemen, my suggestion is to tag it with the product image and corresponding URL. If Google so wishes to change it's algorithm to display the image more prominently, then it would kick in and work.
I wouldn't omit it or use recipe's as a product page tag. If Google goes more aggressive with schema, you'll just have another work on your plate to figure out which pages had the recipe image.
-
Darin, how does your link look in Yahoo or Bing. Do they display the image?
-
I think you guys have stumbled onto something. Here's a link someone advertised as showing product images in search, but reviewing the link again gives nothing.
Did google remove the functionality for products and kept it for authors, recipes? Maybe to not dilute Google Merchant Center?
I can't find a working example to analyse in 'Structured Data Testing Tool'
-
I had considered using the recipe image snippet for this instead of the author tag.
-
I haven't seen images for product snippets working yet. I have had that part of the Rich Snippets product code in place for a few months and other aspects of the snippet are showing in Google, but not the images yet (at least not for me or any of my competitors as far as I can tell).
-
Exactly.
You can view the schema codes here, here's the product page one with examples. You can see image highlighted
Hope that helps.
-
Cheers Cyto. It is short term reward vs long term pain.
btw: What is the snippet for showing the product image in the SERP?
-
There is no doubt in my mind, search engines will get smarter and punish those who abuse the system.
It's been the norm since the beginning, from keyword stuffing to exact match-domains. Eventually search engines will catch up and punish. When this happens, you'll be in the deep hole trying to recover rather than strengthen.
My advice would be to go down the correct route for tagging product pages. I don't think an author tag is right for a product page, but introduce breadcrumbs, prices, ratings and product images. Last thing you want are users clicking on your page and leaving.
If I wanted to buy a laptop and saw the face of an author who wrote that page, that's a WTF moment for me. Instead, show me a screenshot of a laptop, the price range, number of reviews and the breadcrumb structure...yeah, I'm clicking that.
What i'm trying to say is that, rather than focusing on the competitor and mimicking, focus on your customer and what best would turn them from newbie to a returnee.

Rich Snippet Not Appearing? Why?
I run a price comparison website and am trying to get merchant name, product name and price appearing in SERPS I have used the Google Structured Data tool and after initally receiving some errors, I was able to remove the errors and ended up with what I thought would be my ticket for awesome looking SERPS. Here is a link to the Google tool with one of my products; Does anyone see any issues? http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?q=http%3A%2F%2Fcdkeyprices.com%2Fproduct%2FBatman-Arkham-Origins-CD-Key The product from my site used in that tool is http://cdkeyprices.com/product/Batman-Arkham-Origins-CD-Key Any ideas?

I'm looking to put a quite length FAQs tab on product pages on an ecommerce site. Am I likely to have duplicate content issues?
On an ecommerce site we have unique content on the product pages (i.e. descriptions), as well as the usual delivery and returns tabs for customer convenience. From this we haven't had any duplicate content issues or warnings, which seems to be the case industry-wide. However, we're looking to add a more lengthy FAQs tab which is still highly relevant to the customer but contains a lot more text than the other tabs. The product descriptions are also relatively small. Do you think this will cause potential duplicate content issues or should it be treated the same as a delivery tab, for instance?

Are there any SEO benefits changing the default home page filename (index.htm) to a keyword rich filename
II'm a newbie. I have a website using the default home page filename: index.htm. I have total control over the web server. I was wondering whether I can get any SEO improvements for my main keyword if I change the default filename with a filename that contains the main keyword, like our-main-product.htm (doing the 301 redirect and changing the server search order, of course)?

Should our social network put all of our member profiles in the site map?
We're working on some changes to our site and want to add a site map file to give some hints to search engines on our member profiles. Our site has millions of member profiles. I want to ensure that Google indexes them. Is there a benefit to submitting millions of profiles across multiple site maps? Is it better to pick a sample of those and submit them? Most member profiles have links to other member profiles. Is there any benefit to taking a single site map of 50k links and then changing it at some frequency so that all of the member profiles are eventually indexed? Thanks.

Where to Put Content For Product Pages - How To Structure Website?
Currently we have 300+ products. We do not have a CMS or Ecommerce site at the time being for certain reasons. Currently our site is set up with content on almost every single page. The main catagory page, explains everything on the main page, then our products page has a lot of text too. But right now, it seems as if our main pages are only ranking. In the near future I will be using a cms and purchasing a template. I noticed most Ecommerce style websites have just the product with the name and price, then when they click on the product it brings you to that page with a brief product description and some photos. My question is, does each page need content? Or can just the product page itself have content? For example, say we have a link to SHOES. Then the shoes page displays dress, casual and athletic. Then the athletic page brings you to a page with, running, tennis, cross training shoes, and so forth. Is it best to write content on this main catagory page? If so, how much? Or should we focus on putting content on the actual page of the individual product? Along with pictures and specifications? I know Content is Key and we are doing pretty well at that, however, I am starting to wondering if we have to much content or too similar content. What is the best structure to try and recieve GREAT organic rankings?

Does putting content in tabs devalue it at all?
Hello! Still very new to the SEO world and just trying to soak in as much information as I can. The site I work for took a substantial hit with the panda update, so we are looking into adding as much quality content as we can in the upcoming months. With our current site layout, space will quickly become an issue. Assuming the content is relevant and useful for the page, will putting the content into tabs be counter productive or devalue it at all?

Lots of links on homepage to internal pages with keyword rich anchor text - problem?
Hi, All! We have a new potential client, that when looking at his site with a tool, we noticed that the previous SEO company they worked with filled the homepage copy with lots of keyword-rich anchor text links pointing to different pages on the site - many links going to the same page, just with different keywords. These links are not indistinguishable in format from the other text, which is why we only noticed it with a tool. I certainly wouldn't recommend doing that to start with, but once all these links are there, would you recommend taking them down? Is there any conceivable chance it could help the site? Is there a significant reason to think it will harm the site? Or will it just be pretty neutral? In all that's been written (much by SEOMoz) about only the first link's anchor text counting, do subsequent links work like a no-follow in the sense that they are a waste of the link-juice of the page, or is it as if they aren't there at all? (And is "only the first link counts" still the most widely held theory, or have there been new developments since?) Thanks, All!
