Wordpress blog duplicate issue
-
So after looking at the set up of the blog ive found this.
http://www.trespass.co.uk/blog/
http://www.trespass.co.uk/blog/category/news/
http://www.trespass.co.uk/blog/category/general/
http://www.trespass.co.uk/blog/category/snow/
Content shown on http://www.trespass.co.uk/blog/ can also be found on the other 3 urls.
The permalink structure is set up as /%category%/%postname%/ which I want to change to just %postname%
Obviously i want to make things as seo friendly as possible so any suggestions to do this right without losing any indexed pages etc. I have limited access to make changes to plugins etc aswell as these need to be done through the development company who manage our site.
Cheers
Robert

Hi Jarno,
I want to keep the categories and yes ideally shorten the urls. I thought about changing ther permalink structure to %postname% instead of the current /%category%/%postname%/
Also I think I could chnage the reading settings to show only snippets of each post and add cusotm category text to make each category url as unique as possible.
This post http://moz.com/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success advises to keep category pages indexed so making these unique as possible is most likely the best solution to avoid duplicate content.
The last thing I want to do is mess anything up. Although the blog itself doesntget much traffic anyway so I can only make it better. Already implemented a few changes including adding google authorship for each user which seems to have worked well. Already ranked a new post on page 2 for "best ski jacket" which was only published last week (date says may but this was altered in publish settings to keep another post sticky)
Thanks for your help.

Robert,
I think I misunderstood/misread your original question. I've just looked at your site again and noticed that the archive category also links to its original position. So no problem on that part.
As I now understand it you want to keep the categories but for url structure you want to exclude them right? So you want to shorten your url right?
regards
Jarno

Hi Jarno,
Yes I have the tech knowledge to implement the canonical tag. Not sure which page you want to make canonical though? Each individual post?
All posts are found under http://www.trespass.co.uk/blog/ but each individual post can also be found under only one category. Im still going through a lot of the blog as i only started with this company 3 weeks ago.
A lot to look into

Robert,
do you have the technical knowlegde to include a rel=canonical to the pages? Linking it to the /blog/page ?
The other pages, like archive etc, can then still show that page only they tell the search engines that the original post is in the /blog/ categorie.
Hope this helps some
regards
Jarno

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your reply, I did think about no indexing the category pages but after reading this post http://moz.com/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success I thought otherwise.
Ideally I'd make quite a few changes to the blog setup but we are moving over to a magento site soon and then I'll have more control of the blog. I did a new post for "best ski jacket" which ranks on page 2 after 4 days. So right now I'm not sure how much of an issue the category pages are. Although the page that ranks is connected to a google plus profile so authority may play its part for now.
Thank for your feedback.

Hi Robert
Your best bet here would be to noindex and nofollow your site's category pages, in order to avoid duplicate content.
The easiest way to do this is with the Yoast SEO plugin. I know you said you don't have much control over plugins, but I'd highly recommend this plugin in nearly all circumstances anyway.
Once installed, click on the SEO button on the left hand navigation in the admin area and then click on titles and metas:

Once there, click on the taxonomies tag and make your settings something like this:

That will noindex and nofollow the pages, meaning that they won't be indexed with the duplicate content on your blog. You can also do the same on the "other" tab to noindex, nofollow author tags as well.
Hope this helps.

Duplicate Page Content
Hey Moz Community, Newbie here. On my second week of Moz and I love it but have a couple questions regarding crawl errors. I have two questions: 1. I have a few pages with duplicate content but it say 0 duplicate URL's. How do I know what is duplicated in this instance? 2. I'm not sure if anyone here is familiar with an IDX for a real estate website. But I have this setup on my site and it seems as though all the links it generates for different homes for sale show up as duplicate pages. For instance, http://www.handyrealtysa.com/idx/mls...tonio_tx_78258 is listed as having duplicate page content compared with 7 duplicate URLS: http://www.handyrealtysa.com/idx/mls...tonio_tx_78247

http://www.handyrealtysa.com/idx/mls...tonio_tx_78260
http://www.handyrealtysa.com/idx/mls...tonio_tx_78260 I've attached a screenshot that shows 2 of the pages that state duplicate page content but have 0 duplicate URLs. Also you can see somewhat about the idx duplicate pages. rel="canonical" is functioning on these pages, or so it seems when I view the source code from the page. Any help is greatly appreciated. skitch.png0 -
Duplicate Content on our own website
Our website sells tickets for events. We also have an news articles section with information about events / artists / venues. From time to time we release a product page and a related news article on a separate page. Some of the content in the news article would be perfect for our product page. Essentially its our product page we want too rank. Would it harm our SEO if we had some of the same content on both of these pages?

Duplicate Content?
Hi All, I have a new client site, a static site with navigation across the top, and down the left side. Two of the menus from the top navigation are replicated in the navigation structure on the left hand side. They have the exact same url structure, they are in fact the same exact page, listed on the site in two areas. My question is - is this a case of duplicate content, or, as they urls are the exact same, will they be seen as a single page? A canonical tag on one would be replicated on the other by the CMS - so do I leave it, or try to get them to re-structure removing one of the links? (I doubt they will do this as its a brand new site they just has developed). Many thanks!

Duplicate content in the title
Good morning, I am developing an application that searches offers in the press. The problem I have is the follow one:
On-Page Optimization | | ofuente
When I find an offer that I have already post, I cant use the same URL because it generates duplicate content , as the URL is generated from the title. If I find two offers in different stores (for example Thomson TV) I am studying two options. The first would be to add a number at the end of the URL
http://www.offertazo.com/televisor-thomson
http://www.offertazo.com/televisor-thomson1
http://www.offertazo.com/televisor-thomson2 Another option I propose would be to add semantic data to provide value (such as the date). For example:
http://www.offertazo.com/01-12-12/televisor-thomson I appreciate your help.0 -
Checking for content duplication against content on your own site.
We are currently trying to rewrite our product descriptions and I'm afraid some of the salespeople that are writing the descriptions are plagiarizing one-another's writing. Is there a content duplication checker that will allow you to check a piece of writing against a specific site rather than all of the web?

Can internal duplicate content cause issues?
Hello all mozzers - has anyone used nitrosell? we use them only because their inventory connects to ours epos point but because they have thousands of 301s on our domain we are getting duplicate content because different sizes of products (we sell womenswear) are creating seperate URLS so we are duplicating both content and URLS - im curious as to whether anyone has experienced simillar problems that have affected their SERPS? Best wishes, Chris

Duplicate content? Not sure.
Good news! I have my first real SEO gig and now I have to be able to actually deliver. I'm up for it but I want to be sure I'm seeing what I think I am before suggesting any changes. I'm working my way throught Danny Dover's excellent book SEO Secrets and learning tons! To see if there is duplicate content on the site, I've taken a sentence from one of the pages on the site and searched for it: i.e., site:storybooksforhealing.com "Some of the most quiet moments are often the most difficult after a loss. Mornings, late nights, time alone." The SERPs show 7 pages that have this text on it. It seems like this is duplicate content, right? This is a Wordpress website so what's happening is the actual page is here: www.storybooksforhealing.com/publish-cup-of-joy/ but there are several archive pages that show excerpts of this text, too. If this is duplicate content (first question) then how would I go about remedying it? Should I set the canonical reference to /publish-cup-of-joy page? Thank you for being patient with my NOOB questions.
