Why you should never use Google Adwords To Conduct Key Word Research
-
Buongiorno from 22 degrees C too damn humid Wetherby UK,
The other day a client wanted to know how much a ppc campaign would cost with a specific bank of keywords. So off i went and loaded in the key words and set the ads thinking it was not live....
A week later i get a tap on the shoulder asking why weve been invoiced for £xxxx oh dio mio!! The damn campaign went to live. So ive got two questions:
1. Do Google adwords automatically go to Live once youve loaded up phrases and ads, i really thought it would have made it more obvious, A " Would you like your campaign to go live" prompt would have been appreciated.
2. As a safety measure is configuring a Google Alert in Analytics to ping when paid traffic is picked up not a bad idea just so ive got a warning sytem set up so to speak.
Grazie tanto,
David -
Thanks for all your replies, like the idea of seetiing up an adwords account not hooked up to credit card
Grazie tanto -
Given how broken Google Alerts has been, I probably wouldn't rely on that. Venture Beat did an article on alternatives and there's a nice comparison of three alternatives on YouMoz.
Personally, I use an AdWords account that isn't linked to a credit card when I use the keyword tool to check things out.

Salve David
If you create a campaign in adwords it goes live straight away. There is no message coming up saying "would you send it live?"
So you better create it on AdWords Editor and then post in on Adwords when you decide to go live with it.
About the alerts I think could be a good idea, but if the keyword get a lot of traffic you might end up having tons of alerts that I am not sure would give you any benefit.
Ciao ciao!

Finding Average Session Duration for AdWords Campaigns
Happy Holidays Mozzers! Does anyone know how to view 'Average Session Duration' for AdWords campaigns? I can't seem to be able to add it within the AdWords platform and when i try and view it on Analytics, the #/visits isn't matching the #/visits I see when I try and review the campaign via AdWords. Any help on this issue would be great! Thanks for reading!

CPC or CPM for Google Display Network?
HI all I'm setting up my first Remarketing campaign on the display network. I'm targeting those that have visited a specific product page at the moment and therefore there won't be a massive amount of traffic to remarket to - roughly no more than 50 clicks/day. My question is - what is the best bidding option for a campaign like this? Not sure whether to go for CPM or traditional CPC. I have previously found CPM much better for Facebook but obviously thats very different to Google. All help appreciated!

AdWords *free* vouchers hurt SEO?
Maybe it was the penguin, or maybe it was Panda, but around about the time of the three updates close together and the rumoured 'parked domain' update that went wrong, I used a free adwords voucher. The site in question used to rank for practically every search term relevant to the niche. Now, I can search back to 60 pages in Google results and nothing. Now, I know its not been de-indexed, it still there when I search for info:TheDomainInQuestion.co.uk It also has 6 site links when searching for the url alone. Each and every page is hand written original content built up over many years and also edited and updated regularly. On linkdetective, I have a very nice rainbow type graph regarding the type of links and also a very very good spread of anchors. 118 different phrases pointing in and aside from one site that linked to me sitewide (16000+ but since removed and now down to 3300 and dropping almost daily). Even with that, the highest percentage of anchor text was 20%. Basically, gone through practically everything that is available on the web about combating penguin and panda, yet the site kept dropping and has disappeared completely for keyword phrases. Might sound a bit paranoid, but could Google have done this on purpose to try to make me carry on with adwords?

How much does Google adwords cost increase year to year?
I am trying to find about how much the cost of Pay-Per-Click increases year to year? If anyone can point me to some data/study that speaks to this I would appreciate it very much.

Super weird stuff in Adwords!
Sup people, Check this out, I found a keyword from the search query report in Adwords, its had over the last month 120,000 impressions and its long tail ish (4 words). Now when I check the keyword tool it says less then 10, when I check Google insights nothing. So I check if EMD is free and it is, so now im really interested! Speak to Google account manager about it he says yeah its super weird, checks account to make sure its not coming from display network and it isn't, so we add the keyword from search query report as a exact match and let it run, this is the second day, yestarday when we added it it done 4000 impressions, today so far its done 500. Whats the score, does it sound like it is doing the traffic or do you think its some sort of bug in Adwords as other tools (keyword tool, Google insights) dont show the same result. The only thing I can think of is, its just kicked in on Google suggestions but not 100% other then that I don't know.

Keyword domains for AdWords - duplicate content an issue
Hi guys, A client of mine has bought a raft of keyword domains for use in an AdWords campaign. This isn't my area of expertise, hence the question. They have a hosting account which can host an unlimited number of domains. Can they set up the domains with the same content on each site and then use AdWords to drive traffic to the sites? I've suggested they can use rel="canonical" to specify that the preferred site is the main site of the company which should bypass the duplicate content issue. Is this the best way to host the sites or is there a better alternative? Thanks in advance, Brendan.
