WordPress Sidebar Links: Valuable or Not?
-
Wondering what people's thoughts are on whether to keep WordPress sidebar links?
For example I write a personal blog and usually write about tech related things, but have a sidebar link with keyword anchor text pointing to my clothing based website - completely unrelated to the content on my blog. As it's a sidebar link, it shows up for every page on the site (easily thousands due to all posts having a page, tags, categories etc).
Are those valuable links to keep? There's an argument that all links are good links. Should I change them to have anchor text of the brand name rather than the keyword?

Thanks Chris,
I removed the sidebar links which were on every page so that may have looked spammy, but have left the ones on my homepage as you say - those are only 1 link, and they're genuinely about me and what I do.

Fergus, I think a couple of followed or nofollowed references from your blog would be acceptable for two reasons: 1. As followed links, that's a small enough number/percentage to expect under the penguin radar and 2. If by chance the links are discounted, the impact would be so small that it probably wouldn't be felt and 3. Your visitors probably wouldn't mind a link to a site that has "great clothes for technology enthusiasts" :-).

"As it's a sidebar link, it shows up for every page on the site (easily thousands due to all posts having a page, tags, categories etc)."
Irrespective of Googles stance on sitewide links you have to ask yourself does that look natural and is the link there to offer value to the visitor. Invariably it looks spammy and planted - and ignored.
I would definitely avoid without no-follow.

Sitewide links are never good and blogroll links were sold big time a few years back, i would not interlink non related sites owned by the same entity, or if you do nofollow them and in either case don't use main keywords.

"Activating" Links - Do External Links Have to Be Clicked On to Really Have Value?
I heard an SEO talk about the concept of "activating" a link - meaning that if an external link to your site exists, but google doesn't detect that it has gotten any actual clicks, they will significantly discount or ignore the value of the link. Obviously between Chrome, toolbars, and GA, google does have a lot of ways to detect whether a link has gotten clicks. What is the SEOmoz take on this issue?

Page links vs. domain links
Hello all, I am trying to find out how Google weighs page inbound links vs. domain inbound links. I have a domain with about 100,000 inbound links and am adding a new page to my domain which at this time has 0 links. I will be trying to outrank a competitors page that has 6,000 inbound links to the competitors page, but only has 26,000 inbound links to my competitors domain . Is there a formula or a way to know how Google values a page link vs. a domain link?

How many nofollow links should we build to have a natural link profile
Hi guys, As with many link builders we have been building lots of dofollow links for our site, so many that mainly our incoming links are dofollow. Some pages have 99.5% dofollow external links which I know is not very natural. In your experience in terms of percentage how much should you have in terms of nofollow external links in your link profile. I noticed SEOMoz has about 12-13% nofollow external links, shall I go with this figure? Thanks guys. David

The Value Of A Link
Hi There, Let's say I am able to get a link from a very well trust worthy blog that writes abot things related to my business. Now my question is how much value does another link with the same anchor text, from the same blog has compared to the first link, or compared to a new link from a slightly less powerfull blog? Or in another words, if I got 1 link from this great website should I invest my time to find another website where I can get a link from or should I invest it in getting another link from the website I already got a link from ( which might be easier)?
