How do I know what my actual backlink profile is?
-
The number of inbound links to my site varies so much across tools (GA, Google Webmaster, Bing, SEOMoz, Majestic SEO, site: operators). What's reality?
-
Google, Bing, SEOmoz, and Majestic all have their own programs that crawl the web, each having their own priorities and algorithms and limitations. Google is generally best for showing you links to a site you have verified in Google Webmaster tools. The other three will show you links for sites that are not your own. For Open Site Explorer (the SEOmoz tool), our index is not as large as Google's (I think they have more cooks in their cafeterias than we have employees altogether at Moz), but we do offer the additional metrics that you can't get from Google.
Google Analytics will show you which links bring visitors to your site that use javascript, and your log files will also show referring sites. If there's a link to your site that no one clicks on, it won't show in your log files.
The exact number of links may never be known, especially if you have links from an intranet behind a firewall that none of the bots are allowed to crawl. That's when you'll see something in GA that you won't see in any of the other tools.
I know this may not be the easy answer you were looking for, but I hope it helps. Let me know if I can do anything to help clarify things for you.

I would go with WMT. Besides the fact that it is Google, they seem to update every week or 2 vs moz who can barely stay on track for their monthly updates.
I dont think there is a 100% tool but from what ive seen all the links that show up in other tools can be seen on webmaster tools and then some. although this may not be true for everyone it is so for my current profile.
also keep in mind that just because it doesnt show up in the profile does not mean it is not counting for you.

Thanks. That's what I've been using as my true "yard stick".

Open Site Explorer gives you about as complete a view as is possible. It does it by crawling the web itself and finding those links for you. You can then run reports on them, etc.
Google Webmaster Tools is a close second, because it represents how Google sees links to your site. It's hardly comprehensive, however, and you have to build your own reports. But, still, anytime Google will give you better detail, take it.

Moz reports way fewer backlinks than google search?
My site is only 11 months old but has steadily (if not slowly) been gaining backlinks. My question, is why Moz shows me at 303 backlinks and Google search console is showing at 1,237? I am more than a little suspicious that this could highlight the reason Moz shows such an unfavorable DA ranking for our site at a DA12. Other competitors that rank for similar keywords to mine are DA 42, DA 65, DA 73, etc. If the largest ranking factor is links, and they have mine reported incorrectly - is this the issue with DA as it relates to sites like mine? Any answer from someone who has experienced similar, or has a definitive answer is more than welcome to chime in! Thanks, Kevin

Can't see backlinks in Search Console
Hello, We have 7 sites and have noticed that for one site, we don't see any backlink info in Search Console even if it's been linked for over 8 months. Other tools show thousands of backlinks, but Search Console is still pending. I also see very little info in regards to Performance even if we are getting thousands of hits a day. Could this be a sign of a bigger problem? In summary, the site is up and running, getting hits, getting backlinks, but Search Console still looks like it's a new site with no activity several months after being installed.

Google Search Console (new GWT) - Does a language specific sub folder need its own GSC profile
HI I've got a clients site set which targets 3 language/countries: English via the main site on the domain.com Turkish via a Turkish language site on a subfolder domain.com/tr/ And German via domain.de The devs have set up .com and .de in GSC and is reporting data in both However there's no data in the domain/com/tr GSC profile ! Is that because its on a subfolder so data pertaining to it is being reported in the main domain.com GSC account ? Or does something more need to be done to set up the Turkish subfolder in GSC ? If so what ? All Best Dan

GA profile when migration domains
I'm migrating a .co.uk domain to .com and am trying to decide if I should reuse the same Google Profile (if I can?) or create a new one. If I choose to reuse the same profile so it has historical data, does anyone know if it's just a matter of keeping the same UA profile identifier in place on the page? Or do I have to change anything on the actual profile in GA as well to say "start pulling data from .com now"?

Google Webmaster Tools not displaying all backlinks
I was asked to take a look at a site that a friend redesigned and immediately plummeted in rankings. It was a flash site where the domain redirected to a flash landing page. When the site was redesigned, they removed the flash page and put in the new site on the domain URL without changing the redirect or putting a 301 in place on the old flash landing page URL. This site didn't have many backlinks to begin with, but it did ok for some important search phrases. Now when I look in Webmaster Tools, there are only 2 backlinks showing. Meanwhile I know there are more backlinks in existence, primarily from yellowpages and citysearch. I've had them put a 301 on the old flash landing page pointing at the domain URL and they've added a canonical URL. What have I missed here?

Deciphering Facebook backlinks
I monitor our web traffic in real time using Woopra. I often make on-the-fly decisions about which AliveChat window to activate based on the backlink. The FB backlinks are encoded with something like http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://www.mydomain.com/&h=PAQFRib7D Is it possible to see which FB page that link originated? Best,

Backlinks on Google Webmaster Tools
As I was reviewing my Google Webmaster tools, I notices a major drop in the number of back links. It used to show over 4,500 links to my site yet the other day it dropped down to 41. None of the directories I've submitted to are showing, nor any blog comments I've posted. Since then, my SEO traffic has started to drop for some keywords. Anyone know why?
