Twitter and SEO

Hello Mozzers,
I am trying to determine the effectiveness of using twitter as an SEO tactic. A site in my niche (healthcare job boards) is ranking very well for a handful of head terms. Their backlink profile is okay, but not amazing. But one thing that stands out to me is their approach to twitter, http://www.physemp.com/socialTwitter.html. It looks like they send an automated feed of their jobs to these specific twitter handles. Each of the handles has over 2,000 followers (some are legit some are bots). The site ranks for some highly competitive head terms (see attached).
Can any of their ranking success be attributed to these various twitter handles? Is Google seeing these twitter feeds and associating high follower count and high tweet frequency with the URL attached to each account? Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

I agree in this particular case the SEO value of their Twitter activity may not be all that significant, but there's no doubt that search engines are increasingly using social signals in their rankings algorithms.
I like to say that social media has 'democratized' the web in a way. In the past, acquiring an in-bound link was like acquiring a 'vote' of sorts for your site. Today, you don't need to have a website in order to 'vote'. When someone follows/likes/+1s you, it's a vote of sorts. I'm not suggesting that individual follows or likes are the equivalent of a good inbound link.
Search engines want to rank websites that they feel are both relevant to the user's search query, and websites that they feel are authoritative. There has been much discussion about search engines looking at things like your 'retweet ratio' or your 'follower to following' ratio. If those types of ratios are 'favourable' that sends a signal to a search engine that you are 'authoritative'.

It could play a little bit of a factor but not much.
The only reason people say social media is considered in SEO, is because for something to be social..it must have some sort of buzz. If someone just posts messages and no one interacts, thats not really social media. That is talking to a wall.
So those tweets might generate responses and those responses can generate into leads, but if they don't then it doesn't matter.

Twitter Analytics: Follower Count & Reporting Inconsistencies
Our number of followers on Twitter has suddenly dropped (yet not dropped) in a really weird way. Twitter Analytics shows follower counts in two places: Monthly increases in followers, and then also in the Audience Insights tab, where you can see three months of follower counts mapped in a chart. Month-to-month, the total number of followers continues to rise. What’s inconsistent, however, is the total number of aggregate followers shown in the cart. Twitter just dropped our to total count of followers by about 600. But it’s not like we just suddenly lost 600 followers last month (in fact we gained far more than that), but rather that Twitter seems to have adjusted the aggregate numbers across the board retroactively for all months. So while month-to-month continues to show gains, overall, we still went down. The only way we would have even noticed this, by the way, is because we have a record of the OLD total follower count that Twitter had previously displayed as recently as last month. So confusing. We’re trying to figure out what happened, and the only thing that seems to make sense is that Twitter may have done a huge spam account purge, and instead of making it look like we suddenly lost a lot of followers, they just updated the aggregate total # of followers across all time……? [For the record, we do not buy followers, but we don’t always do the best job at blocking spam followers when the do follow us either.] Any advice would be appreciated, thanks. 🙂

Twitter interactions
We would love for some feedback as we're facing an internal dilemma on how to utilize twitter for our business. We are launcing a new travel site that will connect travellers based on their activities and also serve as a booking platform. One part of our marketing team suggests we make two seperate twitter accounts; one 'formal' that follows a structured guideline in posting relevant material and one for the Social Media manager to reply to people as site official. The other part suggests we reply and interact using the 'formal' account; no second twitter account needed for interacting. What would you suggest?

Hi Mozzers, Do shortened URLs, such as bitly and owly help out my website in terms of SEO? I know they will help in terms of referral traffic from people clicking on the URLs, but how about increasing DA, PA, etc.? Thanks!

Building links to a Twitter/social account
I've seen plenty of articles about using Twitter to build links, but how about building links to a Twitter account? Does registering on sites and directories like Topsy, Twellow and Klout help? We can link to Twitter accounts on our own websites and other social profiles, and use it as our link on blog comments etc, but is there anywhere else specific?

How to Analyze Twitter Followers
I'm working on an infographic and I need a way to analyse the followers of about 25 to 50 industry twitter accounts to figure what type of people their followers are. twittersheep.com used to do exactly this, look at the profile description area of twitter and produce a tag cloud of a given twitter account's followers based on terms from their profile fields. But they are no longer online. Anyone know of another service that does this ? Or can think of another way to get this data.
